IAM1619 – Real Estate Investor Shares His Positivity and Insights

Podcast Interview with Matthew Martinez

Why it was selected for “CBNation Architects”: One of the most impactful things I heard over, and over and over again was the importance of the morning routine and while it seems obvious it is often overlooked. When starting something new and thinking of planning and preparation, don't forget about the morning routine. Matthew has contributed to our sites in the past so it was awesome to have him on the show. It was interesting that he wasn't a morning person originally but one of his mentors influenced him and now he has a purposeful routine at 4/5 in the morning.

Gresham Harkless 1:53

Awesome, let's do it then. So I know I touched on a little bit, but what I wanted to do is to rewind the clock a little bit. And hear a little bit more on how you got started with what I call your CEO story.

Matthew Martinez 2:02

Awesome. So my journey in real estate started in 2009. I was an excited first-time home buyer and my realtor at the time noticed my passion for real estate. And suggested that I start studying to get my license. I took the advice and about a year later I was a licensed real estate agent. At that time the market was flooded with foreclosures and short sales and many agents were actually leaving the business. A lot of people told me I was crazy for wanting to begin my career, at that point in time, but it didn't stop me. While learning to, you know, navigate the crazy real estate market, I focused on improving my real estate knowledge and business skills. And today I'm a successful real estate broker and investment specialist, with a growing team and client base.

Gresham Harkless 2:45

Nice, I absolutely appreciate that. And I know we're going through a disruptive time you know as we speak. And doing this interview but you know, I always, back in 2009 read so much about like how much you know obviously it's a chaotic time. But there are so many opportunities if you were to lean into it. So I love hearing that in your story, how you found something you loved, and you kind of rolled up your sleeve, and did the work and then a tremendous amount of opportunity sounds like it came from there.

Matthew Martinez 3:12

Exactly, exactly. It was, you just had to be willing to roll up your sleeves, and get dirty. And learn that side of the business, and it was an exciting time for me, very challenging but worked out well and worked out well for some of my clients as well.

Gresham Harkless 3:29

Yeah absolutely. Sounds like you and your team hit the ground running. Which is what everybody always hopes for, but a lot of times it takes those seeds. And put in the work for that to happen. And so, I wanted to hear a little bit more about you know your clients, how you're serving your audience, could you take us through a little bit more on what that looks like and how you serve the clients you work with.

Matthew Martinez 3:46

Of course, so like we said before, I am a luxury investment real estate broker and investor myself. You know, I specialize in getting my clients who are selling top dollar with the least amount of stress possible. We're very very focused on making things as easy as possible for our clients. So my team just kind of goes above and beyond, to make sure our clients get top dollar. And they really don't have to do much on their end, but follow our directions. And let my team take it from there. I also run a program to help my investor clients find some off-market investment opportunities, that aren't normally out there for everyone else.

Gresham Harkless 4:29

Yeah, I absolutely love that. And I can't imagine just because you've been around, you know, so many kind of real estate transactions, I imagine like when somebody potentially is buying their house or potentially selling their house or they're thinking about investing in real estate, there's so much that they don't know. So it's great to kind of hear like it sounds like, you have that really great experience for people. Whether they have a lot of knowledge or they don't have as much knowledge to be able to make sure they're set up for success.

Matthew Martinez 4:53

Yeah, exactly. I tried to be a resource for everyone. I always talk about my experiences which a lot of times it helps a lot of people. And you know we're here to educate, and like I said be a resource for our clients and potential clients and even our peers as well.

Gresham Harkless 5:11

Yeah absolutely. I'll create that win-win scenario as much as possible. And so, what would you consider to be, what I like to call your secret sauce. Which can be for yourself or personally or the business or a combination of both, but what do you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique.

Matthew Martinez 5:27

My secret sauce would have to be, that I always go above and beyond for my clients. And I always put their needs first. Many of the people in my industry are all about the next transaction. And I'm all about helping my clients achieve their goals, and building long-term relationships with them. One of my main business models is relationships over transactions.

Gresham Harkless 5:49

That's huge. And I think that in most industries especially, you know, you hear that sometimes you know from other real estate brokers or agencies or people professionals that, a lot of times you feel as if you are just like a number on the list. And you don't feel like you have actually built that relationship. So, I love how you have that as for lack of a better term, like a guiding star, to everything that you do.

Matthew Martinez 6:13

Exactly.

Gresham Harkless 6:14

Yeah, and I think that it sounds like, it manifests itself in your process. The way that you say that you make sure that people have kind of like that great experience. Because you know that it's not just like a one-time, it sounds like a lifetime relationship.

Matthew Martinez 6:29

Exactly, and we have a lot of repeating referral business from running our business like that. It's not all about making that deal and getting that transaction done. It's about like I said helping them achieve their goals and creating that long-term relationship.

Gresham Harkless 6:46

Yeah absolutely. And it kind of sounds like, from all the content and information that you do as well too, being able to grow such a mass following that that probably, comes out in the work and the things that you create as well.

Matthew Martinez 6:58

Exactly. Yeah, we really tried to try to focus on being real. And really just showing people, what my daily life looks like. And the highs and lows and everything that comes with it.

Gresham Harkless 7:12

Yeah, and I think that's huge because I think so many times, people have no idea on you know the steps to success so to speak. And I think seeing that and being able to kind of document that and have that accessibility, obviously provides that relationship and connection. But also an understanding of what the road is sometimes people are going down.

Matthew Martinez 7:30

Exactly, I think especially nowadays, a lot of people before they go to make a big decision, they do a lot of research. And just being personable and like I said always being a resource and putting that information out there. It just helps get more business. And I help make sure that my clients and other people are just more educated and knowledgeable about what's going on.

Gresham Harkless 7:52

Yeah, absolutely. What's the saying, If you help enough people get what they want then it helps you get what you wanted, and create a big win opportunity. And so, I wanted to switch gears a little bit and I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an app or a book or a habit that you have. But what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

Matthew Martinez 8:11

Hands down my favorite life hack that completely changes both my personal and professional life, is having a strong and purposeful morning routine I get up around 4:30- 5 o'clock every morning drink my celery juice, and meditate. I send my affirmations, sent my intentions, and goals for the day. And I get to work out. I never used to be a morning person at all. So this routine drastically helped change my lifestyle and more importantly my mindset as well.

Gresham Harkless 8:42

Yeah, I love that as someone who's not, I always say I was a lot more of a 12 to 2 am person than I was a 4 am person. Was there something that kind of like propelled you, to make that change in your morning routine?

Matthew Martinez 8:56

To be honest, it was my old mentor was the one who noticed, that I was like you, I was more of a night owl. And in this business, you can only get so much done being a night owl. You kind of need to hit the ground running and start your day early. So it took me a while to build up to that point but now I do it happily every morning.

Gresham Harkless 9:21

Yeah, absolutely. I think Tony Robbins said I think he has a quote, where he says in order to win the day you have to win the morning. And I would Echo that where you hit that, then you hit the ground running at the beginning of the day. And it just propels yourself, propels you throughout your day sometimes your week just by having those morning routines that you can lean on.

Matthew Martinez 9:40

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. It's just, from a mindset standpoint, I just started off positive and a lot of the challenges that I face every day, they're easier to handle because I have that positive mindset, really early in the morning. And I just try to power the other day.

Gresham Harkless 9:59

Yeah, absolutely and I think, so many times in business and I imagine you know in real estate as well too there are so many things that you try to plan for but you can't plan for that pattern to pop up but so many times we can't control our mindset and I love those affirmations the way you set yourself up again for success.

Matthew Martinez 10:16

Yeah, it helps a lot. And I've been helping more people push themselves to do the same. And I love getting positive feedback from people. It was the same experience that I went through, so, it helps out a lot.

Gresham Harkless 10:32

Yeah absolutely. And I think, it's exciting too, of course, to win and see and be successful. But when we're able to kind of lean into or pour into other people, and see them succeed as well too, that's definitely just as gratifying if not more gratifying that's for sure.

Matthew Martinez 10:45

It's honestly one of the things that help motivate me even more.

Gresham Harkless 10:49

Yeah absolutely. And so, I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be more of a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something you would tell a client or something somebody you're coaching or talking to, or it might be something if you were to hop into a time machine you would tell your younger business self.

Matthew Martinez 11:06

My gold nugget would have to be, to always believe in yourself and try to think out of the box. Many times I find myself navigating complex in very difficult situations. But by being creative, I usually find a way to make a situation a win-win for all parties involved. Which is my favorite. You know, by doing that I close more deals and I definitely stand out from my competition. And like I said, I end up with more repeat referral business and respect for my peers and my clients by having that attitude.

Gresham Harkless 11:38

Yeah, I appreciate that so much. Because I think and I don't want to put words in your mouth, it kind of sounds like, you're approaching it from like, an abundant mentality. Because I think so many times, you said your peers and I think in so many different industries. You can think of somebody that does something similar or exactly what you do as a competitor. And you want to hide all your secrets and not help them out and so on and so forth. But I think when you have an abundant mentality, you start to see that, even as you pour into people your quote-unquote competition, but really they can help you as much as you can. Help them, then it starts to change things.

Matthew Martinez 12:10

I agree 100 percent by having that, those interactions with people when I go to do business with them. Later on down the line moving forward, those transactions are much more streamlined. And there are less problems that occur because we already have that rapport with each other and we're on good terms.

Gresham Harkless 12:27

Yeah absolutely. When you start to as you said so well, be a lot more relationship-focused than transactional focus, then you start to see that hey, this person you know, might have an opportunity that we can both win and now or even in the future.

Matthew Martinez 12:42

Exactly.

Gresham Harkless 12:43

Awesome. So I wanted to ask you now my absolute favorite question. Which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different quote-unquote CEOs on the show, so Matthew what does being a CEO mean to you?

Matthew Martinez 12:54

For me being a CEO is about doing something that I'm passionate about. And also helping others achieve their goals. Along the way, I pride myself in being a visionary in bringing a positive impact to my team and all of our clients.

Gresham Harkless 13:10

Yeah absolutely. And I think I appreciate you talking about all the different aspects. Because I think so many times, when we think about our leadership and things that we do, sometimes we just can get stuck in like okay this is helping out me or potentially my family. But I think we start to understand clients, and partners, it just creates a domino effect.  Where the things that you do start to really have a tremendous impact on everything.

Matthew Martinez 13:31

Exactly, and then it just kind of builds up from there.

Gresham Harkless 13:34

Yeah absolutely. Well Matthew, truly appreciate that definition and that perspective. I appreciate your time even more. What I wanted to do is just pass you the mic so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional that you can let our readers and listeners know of course how best they can get a hold of you, find out about all those awesome things that your team are working on.

Matthew Martinez 13:52

You know, one thing I really pride myself on, and I'll keep pushing it all day long, is just to always keep a positive mindset. No matter what life throws at you, and know that you have the strength and ability to power through and achieve anything you set your mind to. There's been definitely been times in my life when I've let life hold me down. And by having that positive mindset and staying focused. I really learned that anything's possible.

Gresham Harkless 14:22

Absolutely, absolutely. And people that want to get a hold of you what's the best way for them to do that?

Matthew Martinez 14:27

People can connect with me on Instagram at Matthew Martinez. You can find me on LinkedIn or on the website at diamondgroupestates.com. I love connecting with like-minded people so please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Gresham Harkless 14:41

Absolutely, well I truly appreciate that Matthew. We'll have the links and information in the show notes. I love that you know the positive nugget that you left us with as well too. Because I think so many times especially during a time like this, where who knows you can't control everything that's happening with like a pandemic or something like that, we can control how we look at it our perspective, our mindset, our positivity as well too. So I love that because I think it's one of those foundational things that again, let you know set you up to be successful, so I love that you're embodying that and that you reminding us of that as well.
