[restrict paid=”true”]

Dr. Cali Estes 1:18

I am I'm excited.

Gresham Harkless 1:20

Awesome. Let's do it. So I wanted to kick everything off with this hearing more about what I call your CEO story and what led you to get started with your business.

Dr. Cali Estes 1:28

So when I was 14, I knew I wanted to make a lot of money. I wanted to leave Philadelphia, and I come from a very poor family. So I had four goals. And I wanted to make a million dollars. I wanted to buy a brand new car because we didn't have the money for a brand new car. And I wanted to get a house by the beach because we were two and a half hours from the beach. And I wanted to find what I call a real man because everybody in my hometown was kind of lazy laid back and what have you.

So those became my purposes for starting my companies. And I've had five, this being the last one that I've had and the most fun because I can give so much back. So I kind of went from the rags to riches to rags story, I had a fitness company in 2008, we had a $4 million company doing great and built it from zero. And when the economic downturn hit, I lost everything and had to start over. I got back into my roots, which are psychology and helping other people find their purpose and passion in life, and have been very successful at it.

Gresham Harkless 2:25

Nice. Well, I definitely appreciate you for telling your story. And I think so many times. I always say there's peace in hearing someone else's story. I think sometimes when you are in those really bad times or not ideal times when you hear somebody that's able to accomplish what you want to inspire to do becomes so much more realistic when you hear that story.

Dr. Cali Estes 2:44

Yeah, absolutely. And a lot of times I wanted to give up because it was like, I've got nothing now and I lost a fitness company, I literally had nothing, I lost my job, I lost my money, lost my house, moved my stuff back from California to Philadelphia, and everything I owned, burned up in a fire. I literally ended up with my phone, my jambay my dog my laptop, and one pair of clothes, which are workout gloves. And I did.

Gresham Harkless 3:08

Yeah, but you've been able to do that. So I definitely appreciate you for obviously doing that. And then it always gives us permission and a reminder that we can do it as well, too. So I know you talked about your most recent company, could you take us through exactly what you're doing and how you serve the clients you work with?

Dr. Cali Estes 3:22

Sure. So I am a celebrity addictions coach, I'm also known as the female Dr. Drew. I focus on specific things that clients get stuck with drugs, alcohol, shopping, gambling, gaming, any vice you have even alcohol that slows you down or doesn't allow you to have your full potential. And I work it backward. So what I do is I take them from what's causing the problem to drugs and alcohol are not your problem. They're your solution to a problem.

What's your problem? And we look at purpose in life and passion in life and limiting belief systems and even ideas around money. People say why can't have money, it's the root of all evil. And I say why not? Why can't you help people and make money? So I challenge that and as I do that, their personality comes out and whatever their vices go down, they become successful.

Gresham Harkless 4:10

Interesting, and definitely correct me if I'm wrong, obviously, I'm not a doctor or anything. But do you feel like are those like sometimes masking is that what happens when you are you know, going to the game and drugs, alcohol and things like that is that's what's kind of manifesting itself. It's not the root cause of the issue kind of sounds like.

Dr. Cali Estes 4:27

Correct. So it's a coping mechanism.

Gresham Harkless 4:29

Okay.

Dr. Cali Estes 4:29

So instead of dealing with the root cause you'll drink or you'll take a drug or your gamble or you'll shop women on Amazon Prime ordering toilet paper for the Coronavirus. I mean whatever, that's an addiction to something. What's the problem? What's your fear? You know what's stopping you?

Gresham Harkless 4:46

Yeah, that makes so much sense and I appreciate you for breaking that down and being able to kind of course do that with your clients. I think you probably find that people are so close to it or I guess even some of those traumas, they probably happen over such a long period of time. It's probably you probably have to do a lot of uncovering of things to be able to understand exactly what their real problem is.

Dr. Cali Estes 5:03

Exactly. And then it's changing your behavior for what you want. People say to me all the time, I want to be successful, I want to be here. But they start over here and they can't seem to get there. And they have all these blockages, well, they say, Well, this happened. And that happened. Like can't because I can't because of this, I can't because of that, and they never get started. And then they say, see, it never worked. And I said, You never even try. You haven't even gotten the boat road yet. And you've already got holes in the boat that sank the boat.

Gresham Harkless 5:27

Exactly. And it sounds like a lot of that probably happens in the mind. Before you even know, getting ready and getting started you know, you have a vision of what you want to be but you start stopping yourself before you're even getting started.

Dr. Cali Estes 5:39

Every company I have had I started less than $300 in my bank account, every company and this last one I came in. And I said to my husband, it was June 5, 2012. It's the day I started my company. I walked in, I said I quit my job today. And he goes what? Reds do it for two weeks. We can't cover it. I said I'll get it. He goes. You're kidding, right? I said I'll do it. I will create more money in two weeks that I wouldn't mind and he was terrified. He's like, there's car payments, there's rent payments, we're gonna get evicted. I said, just let me do it.

Two days later, I handed him a check for three grand it was my first client. And he was just shocked. Like, how'd you do that? And I said positive intention. I didn't let anything negative in my head, I'm gonna make it happen. Come hell or high water. I want to be Sprint, I paid 595 I had business cards delivered. And I put them everywhere. And everybody I met I have here's a card. Here's a card. Here's a card. It's the old FUBU Daymond. John, here's my CD, here's my hat. Here's my thing. Eventually, someone goes, well, I need that. And bam, that's what happened.

Gresham Harkless 6:34

Nice.

Dr. Cali Estes 6:34

So it's your face approach with me.

Gresham Harkless 6:36

Yeah, absolutely. And I appreciate you bringing up Daymond John because it's actually coming to my mind because he has a book called The Power of Broke. And a lot of times, you know, we see things like being broke or, or you know, having this type of restriction or can't do this or that as something that is stopping us from doing something. But in reality, part of what his book is talking about is that actually is your advantage is going to propel you to the place that you need. Because you have that survival mentality.

Dr. Cali Estes 6:59

Absolutely. That's what's always propelled me because I came from a very poor background. And I had no mentors no money, and nothing. And it was either I do it, or I don't, I have no safety net. So I always fly without a safety net. And that's been what's kept me moving. All the years are what's next. What's next? What's next, what else can I do, because if I don't, you know, there's two wolves climbing up the mountain.

And you're either if you're at the top of the mountain, you're going to come down, someone's right behind you, you have to keep moving that mountain peak up. And if you keep doing that, people will always beat your heels. But you keep setting the bar setting the bar setting the bar, people start getting tired, you sit in the bar and go you know what, forget it, I'm gonna I'm gonna compete with her or him. They're just too far up there. And then bam, you're winning the next stage.

Gresham Harkless 7:41

Exactly, exactly. Yeah. And I think when you are able to kind of dial in to be your own competition, you're setting the bar, you continue to set the bar. So many times we're looking at external influences. So I want to be like this person, I want to do that for what that person has done. And that ends up being I guess, a recipe for disaster because you're not running your own race.

Dr. Cali Estes 7:59

Exactly. Yep.

Gresham Harkless 8:01

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So you think that mentality, you kind of spoke to the ability to be able to just say, Hey, I'm going to get this done, I'm gonna continue to set that bar is what you would call like, I call it your secret sauce, that of the thing that you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique.

Dr. Cali Estes 8:13

Yeah, absolutely. Too many people get stuck in their limiting belief systems. And they say my mom said, I couldn't my dad said I couldn't. Or society says I can't, you know, I'm a female society says I should get married, make babies have a white picket fence and a dog and a husband, and look the other way, when he cheats on me, that's what society says I should do. And I went, No, that's not my path. That doesn't resonate with me. And I've always been an entrepreneur. And I've always said, This is what I'm gonna do. And if people don't like it, they don't like it. And people didn't like it. And I said, That's okay. Because you don't have to like what I'm doing. I have to like what I'm doing. And if I do, like, if I like what I'm doing, I'm going to be successful, because I'm happy.

Gresham Harkless 8:52

Nice. And I love that. And I think so many times, as we kind of talked about, you know, looking at looking externally for validation and what we're doing, but really, we have to look internally for validation. And that will help us to make sure that we are doing exactly what we should be doing that, you know, living to somebody else's standards.

Dr. Cali Estes 9:08

Absolutely.

Gresham Harkless 9:09

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So I wanted to switch gears a little bit. And I want to ask you what I call a CEO. hack, so that could be like an app or book or habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

Dr. Cali Estes 9:21

So I'm a big fan of Wayne Dyer. And I'm a big fan of Wayne Dyer's Power of Positive Intention, which became my quote-unquote, Bible, because everything external negative would come at me. And I would sit down, and I would read that and read that and read that and apply the principles of staying focused and staying the course. And then I learned as negative stuff came, I could choose to evaluate it and deal with it. Or I could say, you know, it's not that important in the scheme of things today.

I didn't have to jump into every negative situation and try to fix it or solve it. And from there, I started sort of revolutionizing getting rid of toxic people. So this is my 72 hacks my second hack is to get rid of your toxic friends, get rid of them on Facebook, and get rid of them in your life on your phone. If you're on the phone for an hour counseling somebody you should be getting paid. That's what I say. So you have to streamline yourself and focus on your goals, and you're going to lose friends along the way. And that's okay.

Gresham Harkless 10:17

Yeah, absolutely. Especially if you're trying to get to where you are, you know, you become who you spend the most time with. And when you are putting yourself with those, quote-unquote, negative people, people that aren't, you know, helping you aspire to be your best self, then you will not be your best self, because that's what you're surrounding yourself with.

Dr. Cali Estes 10:32

Absolutely.

Gresham Harkless 10:33

Awesome and let me ask you this just kind of drilling down a little bit more on that. Do you feel was that something that you developed? Was it something you feel like you innately had or was something you developed over time, the ability to kind of look positively and be able to see that?

Dr. Cali Estes 10:47

I was a negative person because I grew up in a town called Pottstown, Pennsylvania, blue collar town struggle was real people didn't have money, and people were on welfare. And it was always you're not going to college, you're not going to be anything because there's no resources for you. So I had to overcome that. And I had to overcome the thought that I was not smart enough, or I didn't have the money to do anything. And then once I did stuff without money, and I went, I can do this. But I realized you don't need money to be successful, you need drive, and you need to hustle. And then you have to tell everybody about what you're doing.

And people will like what you're doing if you're excited about it. They're excited about it. And that's what propelled me forward. And I just kept grinding and grinding and grinding. And I said, I am going to be a household product, I am going to be a household name. And that was important to me. And a friend of mine, who's Dr. Drew's PR person had said to me, Well, do you want Dr. Drew to endorse you? I said, No, I want to be the female Dr. Drew. And she looked at me and laughed. And sure enough, on the red carpet, the media dubbed me that and she looked at me and went well, you weren't kidding.

I said, Absolutely not. I don't want to be somebody else. I don't want their signature, I'm gonna give you my signature. And I sort of adopted that when I was in my late 20s When I was doing the fitness company, and people would say, Oh, your work was SO and SO celebrity? And I'd say yeah, do you have a signature? I said, No, I don't need it. They need my signature. And as I said that and said that I became bigger and bigger. And I was like, This is how they do it. And I just stuck with it.

Gresham Harkless 12:07

Yeah, absolutely. And going back to like running your own race and staying true to yourself. Because you know, you want to be the female version of this, or the male version of that, or so on and so forth. No, you just want to be your best self. You want to, you know, spread your boldness is brilliant brilliance as much as you can to the world. And when you are staying true to that, as you've been able to do that, as you talked about, you know, how you have been able to develop it, that's when you start truly start to become a household name.

Dr. Cali Estes 12:30

Absolutely, yeah.

Gresham Harkless 12:31

Awesome. So I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be like a word of wisdom or a piece of advice, or something, you might even tell your younger business self.

Dr. Cali Estes 12:41

Get up every day, I don't care how tired you are, and spend the first 10 minutes meditating or doing yoga or focusing in on what you're going to do for the day, don't check your email, don't check your phone, log, none of that, get up and put the intention for the day. Because if you don't, you're gonna get sidetracked on all the other crap. And next thing you know, it's three o'clock in the afternoon, you haven't had breakfast, you haven't showered, you're still in your PJs. And you went what just happened? So every morning, I get up, I set the intent. And I make a list of what I'm going to do. And then I go from there.

Gresham Harkless 13:11

Awesome. I absolutely love that. And I think you're you're so right, because I think I love the action part of it. Because I think so many times you think you're going to wake up and then things are just gonna happen. But you have to be very intentional about everything that you're doing. If you're not, then the world will take hold of you. And then you'll be kind of at home to the world.

Dr. Cali Estes 13:26

Absolutely. And then it's Friday, and you went where did the week go?

Gresham Harkless 13:29

In the month in the year and the next thing you know, it starts to build up. You're like where the next year happen? So now that makes so much sense. So I wanted to ask you now my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different quote-unquote, CEOs on the show. So Dr. Cali, what does it mean a CEO mean to you?

Dr. Cali Estes 13:47

Being a CEO, to me is when people come to me for advice, and I can give them solid advice from my experience that I know works. Because I've been there and done that I've been through the trials and tribulations and I know how to run a company, I know how to make money, and how to scale something. I know how to go on a stage and deliver a speech. And people say how do you do that? I did it because I learned it. So I'm 25 years, and I can give you my experience as a CEO, and as a company on a multiple company owner on how to do things easily, quicker, faster, and better.

Gresham Harkless 14:16

Awesome, awesome. Awesome. And I love you know, that comes from the experience that you had, I think so many times, there's advice, floating and information flowing. That's not necessarily in alignment with what people have done. So I appreciate you for obviously doing it and then feeling like it's most important to be able to get back to so many people and be able to provide that insight and knowledge as to how to be successful.

Dr. Cali Estes 14:35

Absolutely.

Gresham Harkless 14:37

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, Dr. Cali, I truly appreciate that. And I appreciate your time even more. What I wanted to do is pass you the mic so to speak just to see if there's anything additional for you to tell the readers and listeners and then of course how best they can you know view and find out about all the awesome things that you're working on.

Dr. Cali Estes 14:51

Sure. So I just read a book called The Seven Keys seven key principles to tap into the wealth inside you. It's my second book, my first one is a little bit different because I'm Married a junkie, I want to tell you why this is called I Married a junkie, your listeners will love this. I got slaughtered on Facebook by a hater who said, Kelly's husband's a junkie, my husband was doing heroin as I was starting my company, she can't be good at her job. And when my husband got sober, I went watch this, I took the haters words, and I wrote a book called I Married a junkie, and I sent him a copy, and I autographed it with a big middle finger, and I sent him to de air.

And that was the best freeing feeling I've ever had. So that book is about is about that. But the seven key principles are about helping you find out who you are, where you're going, getting rid of limiting belief systems, making peace with money, purpose, passion, jumping, vision boards, all of that stuff. And that's what I'm all about. You're gonna get who you are moving forward, having a good time in life, making money and enjoying what you do, and helping people is the best feeling I've ever had. So your listeners can find me at caliestes.com, addictions coach.com, or Dr. Cali Estes, on any social handle.

Gresham Harkless 15:57

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, thank you so much, Dr. Cali, we will definitely have the links and information in the show notes so that everybody can follow up with you. Love the story, and love the message behind the story even more for the people who are telling you that you can't do X, Y, and Z or a, b, and c, then you definitely make sure you read a book about it, sign it with a middle finger and then send it to them as well too. So I think that's awesome. I think I love everything that you're doing and I truly appreciate your time I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.

So it's in your face approach with me.

Gresham Harkless 6:36

Yeah, absolutely. And I appreciate you bringing up Daymond John, because it's actually coming to my mind because he has a book called The Power of Broke. And a lot of times, you know, we see things is like being broke or, or you know, having this type of restriction or can't do this or that as something that is stopping us from doing something. But in reality, part of what his book is talking about is that actually is your advantage has is going to propel you in the place that you need. Because you have that that survival mentality.

Dr. Cali Estes 6:59

Absolutely. That's what's always propelled me because I came from a very poor background. And I had no mentors and no money, and nothing. And it was either I do it, or I don't, I have no safety net. So I always fly without a safety net. And that's been what's kept me moving. All the years is what's next. What's next.

So I want to be like this person, I want to do that for what that person that has done.

Or the society says I can't, you know, I'm a female society says I should get married, make babies have a white picket fence and a dog and a husband and look the other way, when he cheats on me, that's what society says I should do.

And I want to ask you for what I call a CEO. hack, so that could be like an app or book or habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient.

Dr. Cali Estes 9:21

So I'm a big fan of Wayne Dyer. And I'm a big fan of Wayne Dyer's Power of Positive Intention, that became my quote unquote, Bible, because everything external negative would come at me. And I would sit down, and I would read that and read that and read that and apply the principles of staying focused and staying the course. And then I learned as negative stuff came, I could choose to evaluate it and deal with it. Or I could say, you know, it's not that important on the scheme of things today. I didn't have to jump into every negative situation and try to fix it or solve it. And from there, I started sort of revolutionising getting rid of toxic people. So this is my 72 hacks my second hack is get rid of your toxic friends, get rid of them on Facebook, get rid of them in your life in your phone.

Awesome in and let me ask you this just kind of drilling down a little bit more on that. Do you feel was that something that you developed? Was it something you feel like you innately had or was something you developed over time, the ability to kind of look positively and be able to see that.

Dr. Cali Estes 10:47

I was a negative person, because I grew up in a town called Pottstown, Pennsylvania, blue collar town struggle was real people didn't have money, people were on welfare. And it was always you're not going to college, you're not going to be anything because there's no resources for you. So I had to overcome that. And I had to overcome a thought that I'm not smart enough, or I don't have the money to do anything. And then once I did stuff without money, and I went, I can do this. But I realized you don't need money to be successful, you need drive, you need to hustle. And then you have to tell everybody about what you're doing. And people will like what you're doing, if you're excited about it. They're excited about it. And that's what what propelled me forward.

And when you are staying true to that, as you've been able to do that, as you talked about, you know, how you been able to develop it, that's when you start truly start to become a household name.

Dr. Cali Estes 12:30

Absolutely, yeah.

Gresham Harkless 12:31

Awesome. So I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be like a word of wisdom or a piece of advice, or something, you might even tell your younger business self?

In the month in the year and next thing you know, it starts to build up. You're like where the next year has happened. So now that makes so much sense. So I wanted to ask you now for my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO.

Because I've been there done that I've been through the trials and tribulations and I know how to run a company, I know how to make money and how to scale something. I know how to go on a stage and deliver a speech. And people say how do you do that? I did it because I learned it. So I'm 25 years, I can give you my experience as a CEO, and as a company on a multiple company owner on how to do things easier, quicker, faster, better.

It's my second book, my first one a little bit different because I'm married a junkie, I want to tell you why this is called I married a junkie, your listeners will love this. I got slaughtered on Facebook by hater who said, Kelly's husband's a junkie, my husband was doing heroin as I was starting my company, she can't be good at her job. And when my husband got sober, I went watch this, I took the haters words, and I wrote a book called I married a junkie, and I sent him a copy, and I autographed it with a big middle finger, and I sent him to de air. And that was the best freeing feeling I've ever had. So that book is about is about that. But the seven key principles is about helping you find out who you are, where you're going, getting rid of limiting belief systems, making peace with money, purpose, passion, jumping, vision boards, all of that stuff. And that's what I'm all about. You're gonna get who you are moving forward, having a good time in life, making money and enjoying what you do, and helping people is the best feeling I've ever had. So your listeners can find me at caliestes.com, or the addictions coach.com or Dr. Cali Estes, on any social handle.

Gresham Harkless 15:57

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, thank you so much, Dr. Cali, we will definitely have the links and information in the show notes so that everybody can follow up with you. Love the story, love the message behind the story even more for the people that are telling you that you can't do X, Y and Z or a, b and c, then you definitely make sure you read a book about it, sign it with a middle finger and then send it to them as well too. So I think that's awesome. I think I love everything that you're doing and I truly appreciate your time and I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.
