IAM1682 – Neuro-Coach Empowers Beauty Professionals to Create Profitable and Impactful Businesses

Podcast Interview with Jacquelyn Rodriguez

Why it was selected for “CBNation Architects”: Jacquelyn gets the human aspect so we talked about silos and the reality of “balance.” It was awesome to hear how she understood the power of human connection and relationships and how that helped her to build her business. I love how she understood that by building something and connecting her “tribe” and her “people” that she could serve those who were waiting for her.

Gresham Harkless 02:29

Awesome. Well, let's get it started then. So to kick everything off, I wanted to just rewind the clock a little bit, and hear a little bit more on how you got started, what I call your CEO story.

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 02:38

So really, it goes all the way back to when I was younger. I am an entrepreneur at heart. Like it fuels everything about me and I love that part of everything that I get to do. Fast forwarding through all of the stuff, I also am a cosmetologist. I've been in the beauty industry for 23 years. Oh my gosh, so long. And being in the industry, I love what we get to do and the personalization that we really get to make as leaders because every cosmetologist is a leader behind the chair. We have clients who sit down and they trust in us and they divulge a lot of information because of that trust. The change and the transformation we get to make this pretty instant was always my love. So going in and speaking with my clients and taking that time to have relationships was always very important to me.

I noticed when I had kids that I started to change things in my life and I became more non-toxic and really liked looking at how was I being for my kids and what things were around the house for them. So I transformed everything in my house to really clean, and non-toxic, really started thinking about sustainability and all of those pieces. But then I would walk into this really toxic environment because as cosmetologists, we were working with chemicals all the time. And if you're a cosmetologist, also the toxic environments like being just not working well with others. Like, there's this whole thing. So walking into my salon every day, really feeling this disconnect and also because of the toxic products and the chemicals, I actually had like noticed slight headaches and not feeling really well. And that's when I really started to see like, okay, since I own the business, like how can I get to make changes.

And I dove really deep into transforming my salon into a non-toxic, sustainable business. And at that time, there was nobody there to guide me. Nobody was changing businesses. You could change stuff at home, but as far as the business, not so much, and especially in cosmetology where those chemicals like man, we're so indoctrinated to believe that this is what we can do. So being able to be the leader in my business and allowing my passions and what I stand for show through is really how I have progressed in my business and how I've built an amazing salon where people drive over an hour to come and see us because of what we do. I noticed that it was something that I needed to support other beauty professionals in creating that profitable but impactful because we are the leaders. We get to show people which way to go. So that was long drawn out.

Gresham Harkless 06:09

Yeah. I love that the word that I use when I introduce you is holistic, to really look at things holistically to realize that one can help support or sometimes not support as much if it's not in the right place the other.

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 06:21

Yeah, for sure. And that's the thing I noticed as an entrepreneur and I noticed other entrepreneurs work this way. Work is here and we work, and this is what we do at work. And then we come home and we're these whole other people and they don't always connect. And a lot of people I noticed say like, I wanna find balance and balance this. And balance isn't really a thing like, we have ebbs and flows and when you are aligned in your business, with the passions and the values that you have as a human being, all of a sudden that balance is. Because yeah, I have times that I work really hard in my business and then I have other times that I'm at home more, and I spend time with my family or focus on me, and it's what people say is balance. But really it's just this ebb and flow because everything is intertwined and aligned with who I am. There are not two separate people anymore. It's just you get me.

Gresham Harkless 07:33

Yeah, absolutely. So I wanted to drill down a little bit more here, how you were able to blaze that trail. Can you take us through a little bit more on how you work with clients, how you make that impact and create that trust and connection in relationships?

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 07:45

Yes. So the biggest thing is relationships. I love connecting with people and genuinely connecting with them, like finding out what problems are coming up. I took my own problems and then put them into my business and I had a whole lot of things that worked and a whole lot of things that didn't work. So taking that and writing it down, seeing what I went through and getting out of my own way of like thinking that I didn't have enough to share or anything like that, and just started putting it out there, creating those relationships in true heart, form of just wanting to support people. So I took what worked for me and I put it together in a package to start supporting other entrepreneurs on that journey.

And I didn't do it all alone. Even though I didn't have a specific business coach showing me the ropes of this, I had to create my own way for that. I had guides and mentors all over the place, and that was the beautiful thing is like I saw in other businesses.

Gresham Harkless 09:03

Yeah, it's extremely powerful. And I almost wonder if that's part of like your, your secret sauce. The thing you feel sets you apart, that you've been able to get all of this information, knowledge and a lot of times when you have, that methodology or you have this path, or this is how I succeed, you can always kind of push that on to people. But you seem to have the ability to meet people where they are, to understand and listen and to guide them to where they can, harness their secret sauces is their superpowers to get to where that they wanna be. Do you feel like that's part of your secret sauce?

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 09:32

Most definitely. Because I see this beautiful soul inside of everybody that they get to shine. And it was something that I really had to work on myself. I grew up in the thought process that like, okay, you do it like everybody else and you don't wanna rock the boat. If you rock the boat, then people look at you differently or they're not gonna take you seriously.

And I just, that is definitely one of the subconscious thoughts that I had to break of my own. And now that I see that I get to be me like this, what you see here today is 100% me. I am. Fiery. I'm passionate. I don't always get everything right. I'm dyslexic, so if I'm like trying to spell something out for you, like so sorry, but this is just what you get. And I've connected with people on a whole new level because I got to be me and I got to just stand for what I believe in. I attracted clients who absolutely just were waiting, they were waiting for someone like me because I connected with them.

So everyone out there that's listening, somebody is waiting for you and your secret sauce. So you just get to dive into that and own it. Love who you are and love what you get to be in the industry that you're in.

Gresham Harkless 11:00

Yeah. And that's so powerful. I love just thinking about like, if you stepping into who you are, if you're running your race, you're staying true to yourself, people are waiting for you. They need what it is that makes you who you are.

So I wanted to switch gears a little bit. Sure. And I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an app, a book, or a habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 11:22

Getting quiet with yourself. Like I talked about, we're so inundated with what we should do, not do, listen to, read all of that. Stop and ask yourself what do you want? And so many times, and this was me, I am a true entrepreneur, so my mind goes 1000 miles an hour. I could not quiet my brain down enough to even ask myself a question of like, what do I actually really want? So taking that time, whether it is meditation, whether it is walking and just having some quiet time for yourself, or maybe something like listening to a certain type of music, like gets you in that, like whatever it is or looks like to you, let it be.

But get quiet with yourself and ask yourself, what is it do I want? Not only for your business, but for your actual entire life? Like, do you just wanna work a hundred hours a week? Does that actually light you up? Or do you wanna be able to take vacations? And what does that look like? And then what is the impact that you want to have with your business? Because when we go into business entrepreneurs, Who aren't just going into it for money, we actually care about something. Right? So what do you want that to represent when you're coming into your business? What do you wanna showcase and just get quiet with your thoughts and let it look like however it looks like to you.

Gresham Harkless 13:00

Yeah, I absolutely love that. And would you consider that to be what I like to call a CEO nugget? Little bit more word of wisdom or a piece of advice, but I usually say it might be something you would tell your younger business self if you were to hop into a time machine or potentially your favorite client.

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 13:13

Yes. Trust yourself and take action quickly.

Gresham Harkless 13:17

Yes. Don't think about it. Just go into it. And I think that's so powerful and freeing.

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 13:22

Yeah, for sure. I think that it's such a powerful thing to be able to take that action and to be human about it, because we are not robots. You're not meant to be. And before I could, something would happen, I would have a failure. I would carry that failure for a month or two months and just go over it and over it and like just dwell in it. Now I just take that and I have an hour or two or a day, depending on how big, I feel like I messed up. It might be a week, but there's no longer this like monthly, yearly and we know people who have been in these ruts for a year or two years and can't seem to get out of it.

It's because we're not allowing it to just let go and be human and then take action quickly and pivot. Failures are going to happen. It doesn't mean anything at all about you.

Gresham Harkless 14:24

Failure is definitely not final unless you decide that you're stopping, and then that's when it becomes that. But if you continue to move on, and take that quick action, then ultimately it'll just be a kind of blip and something that you can ultimately learn from.

Now I want to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO and we're hoping to have different CEOs on this show. So, Jacqueline, what does being a CEO mean to you?

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 14:46

Being a leader and creating an impact in everything that you're doing because everything you do will impact someone. So you get to choose who that someone is and how big that impact is. And in every business, I've ever been a part of I really lean in on the impact it has to be profitable too, right? That's what we get to do. But that's why I teach creating businesses that are profitable and impactful because the impact is where we're gonna lead generations to come, and that's huge.

Gresham Harkless 15:19

Well, Jacqueline, truly appreciate that definition. Of course, I appreciate your time even more. So what I wanted  to do now was pass you the mic, so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional that you can let our readers and listeners know, and of course, how best people can get all of you find about all the awesome things that you're working on.

Jacquelyn Rodriguez 15:33

You can find me on Instagram, Facebook. LinkedIn as the Clean Beauty Biz Coach, and also my website is cleanbeautybiz.com and we are in Warrenton, Virginia, and you can go to enlightenedstyles.com.
