IAM2783 – Why Leadership Is Built on Consistency, Not Hype
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Fallacy of the “Big Splash”
Most builders believe that launching something new requires a “big splash”—massive marketing and instant momentum. However, sustainable leadership rarely looks like hype; it looks like consistency. In this episode, Reverend Kate Floyd shares her journey of leading a mission-driven startup, reminding us that building a community from scratch requires more patience than noise.
Credibility in the Incremental
Trust and interest aren't built overnight; they are formed slowly, conversation by conversation. While it's easy to show up when energy is high, true credibility is formed when progress feels incremental. People don't follow vision alone—they follow consistency. When you show up repeatedly with clarity and care, you build a quieter, stronger momentum that leads to long-term loyalty and influence.
The Human Side of Leadership
The ultimate takeaway for any business owner is that the slow path is often the strong path. In a world obsessed with optimization and moving fast, it’s easy to forget that the heart of business is human interaction. Ask yourself: “Where in my business am I chasing quick momentum instead of building steady trust?” Answering that question is the key to creating an environment of true alignment and sustainable growth.

Most builders think launching something new requires a big splash. Think about it. Big marketing, big announcements, big momentum out of the gate. But here's the thing about sustainable leadership. It rarely looks like hype. It looks like consistency. In episode number 20 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with Reverend Kate Floyd, who led a startup church in Northern Virginia. What really stood out to me during this conversation was how starting something mission-driven requires patience more than noise.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content: visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO podcast.

Most builders think launching something new requires a big splash. Think about it, big marketing, big announcements, big momentum out of the gate. Think about it. When you're building a community from scratch, you don't just need attention, you need trust. And trust is not something that's built quickly. It's actually something that's built slowly. Think about it week by week, conversation by conversation, relationship by relationship. For builders that are working in their business every day, this is an important reminder. Launching is exciting, sexy, but sustaining is ultimately the leadership. It's so easy to show up when energy is high. It's harder to show up when progress feels incremental. And that's where credibility is formed. Rev and Kate's journey highlights something that's extremely powerful. People don't follow vision alone, they follow consistency. When people see you show up repeatedly with clarity and care, confidence builds. Momentum becomes quieter but stronger. The real takeaway here is that long-term growth is rooted in steady leadership, not short-term excitement. If you want loyalty, show up. If you want influence, stay present. And this connects naturally to how builders think about the human side of leadership— how culture is formed, how communities are nurtured, and how people ultimately feel seen, which I think is the essence of human interaction. So this is a quiet but a powerful thread of the human and people pillar, how leaders build environment of trust and alignment. And as I often say, people and we as business owners and leaders often forget about the human part of business, but even the human part of life. Here's a question worth asking yourself: where in my business am I chasing quick momentum instead of building steady trust? That question can shift how you think about growth. Because I'm a big person that's in optimization, moving fast and getting rid of anything that's blocking you towards your momentum. But keep this in mind, sometimes the slow path is actually the strong path. Now obviously in this episode we talked around a lot and we went deeper into mission-driven leadership, community building, what it really takes to start something meaningful from zero. So it's such a great episode to listen to and consider and to think about like how can you implement this into your business and the thing that you're building.
