01:05 – Gresham Harkless

Super excited to have you on as well. I love that she says on her site that she's not an expert in life, but loves to explore, learn, and document because I truly believe in the quote that the more you learn, the less you realize that you know. So I love that you have that spirit in everything that you're doing. So, Rollie, are you ready to speak to the I AM CEO community?

[restrict paid=”true”]

01:53 – Roli Edema

Yes, I am. Thank you so much.

01:55 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Well, let's do it then. So, to kind of kick everything off, I wanted to rewind the clock a little bit and hear a little bit more about how you got started, what I call your CEO story.

02:03 – Roli Edema

Yeah, so I got started a few years ago with really a personal experience that I've had, and that was simply the fact that I was always a very shy child. Shyness was something I really struggled with when I was younger and the thing with me is that I felt like I had so much to say and so much to share, but I, for some reason, I just felt limited and I couldn't express myself the way I wanted to. Writing really proved to be this avenue of expression for me where I could really talk about things and talk about things at length that maybe in person I wouldn't be able to do so easily. So I started blogging and that really opened the world of digital marketing and personal development to me. I remember really enjoying all these articles that talked about topics that people might not necessarily talk about every day. I remember reading an article on reasons why you should never get a job and that was so taboo to me, like, you know, who talks about that? And so that really built my interest in personal development and, you know, exploring all of these topics that relate to life and helping people get what they want.

03:29 – Gresham Harkless

Nice. I truly appreciate that. And it's so funny. I love stories and hearing people tell their stories because sometimes you can hear yourself in the story, and as you were telling yours, I could hear the exact same thing I felt like reading and writing provided such an outlet and kind of a world that sometimes you didn't even know existed. When she starts to realize that people can develop themselves, they do go about their life and their business, their careers, whatever, in a completely different way. Sometimes that's the only way to know, by reading, being blogs or documents. So I love that you've been able to kind of, you know, expand beyond that, for sure.

04:02 – Roli Edema

Yeah, exactly. It's amazing what you can do when you really take on self-education and, you know, you find out different things for yourself rather than just waiting for people to spoon-feed you information. It's amazing.

04:18 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, absolutely. Especially we have all these awesome ways at our fingertips for us to be able to do that. So I love that you, of course, have created one of those as well, too. So I wanted to drill down a little bit more and if you could tell us a little bit more about your site all the awesome things you're doing and what we can find to support it.

04:35 – Roli Edema

Yeah. So what I do rollyardemo.com is that I really provide business owners with assistance in terms of what I call the mental game. So developing the skills, the mental skills such as personal intelligence, and emotional intelligence to help us reach our goals, because these hidden aspects of our personality, you might say, are really what builds the foundation for success. I've received amazing feedback from readers around the world on topics such as, as I mentioned, overcoming shyness, the characteristics of observant people, and topics like training your mind to be stronger than your feelings. So these are topics that I love to cover on my blog, and I'm glad to help people all around the world who are looking for, you know, advice on these issues.

05:34 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, that's why I absolutely love your site. And, you know, everything you talk about, you know, as far as your story and being able to build and grow it, because I always kind of wish I knew that, you know, you can develop certain skills, you can develop certain things, and I think once you become aware of that, you can start to say, okay, this is where I want to be, and how do I develop that? That's why I love that you are able to kind of create so much great content around that.

05:56 – Roli Edema

Thank you. Yeah, I definitely agree.

05:58 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So I wanted to ask you now for what I call your secret sauce. This could be for yourself personally or the blogger, a combination of both. But what do you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique?

06:10 – Roli Edema

Yeah. So I would say that my secret sauce is probably the fact that I try as much as I can to really put the personal and personal development. So on my site, you won't really find, you know, articles, generic how-to articles that are just, you know, lists that you could just Google on the Internet. And, you know, it's just a collection of these widely circulated tips. I really try to get more personal than that and have warmth conveyed through my writing because, you know, I'm sharing my personal experiences. That's something that I think is really valuable for entrepreneurs and business owners, is that when you really show this, personality through your work, it becomes very hard for people to copy what you do because no one else is going to have the same experiences that you have. So I write to my readers directly, you know, I say you a lot of the time, and I, because many times we're all in the same boat, we're going through the same issues, maybe in different ways, in different contexts, but I try to be like a helpful friend.

07:23 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, I absolutely love that. And it definitely comes across, even as you were, again, telling your story. I can feel, you know, that connection. I think sometimes we forget, you know, with all these digital tools, whether it be blogs or social media, we forget about that human, I say all the time, we forget about the human aspect of business. So I love that personal and personal development because we forget about ourselves, our stories, and how that doesn't kind of disconnect us from other people. It actually connects us a lot more the more we tell it and lean into it.

07:51 – Roli Edema

Exactly. It's definitely the secret sauce that we all have. For everyone, it's different. But some people might feel that you know, we've gone through things that are not quite, quite negative, actually, things that perhaps we wish didn't happen, but we can use these experiences to help others. It really has a transformative impact when you do that.

08:14 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, absolutely. Because I think especially when you're going through struggles or difficult, you know, experiences, you feel like you're by yourself. But often when we tell her story, we're like, oh, that happened to me too. This is how I got through it. Then when we began to tell those stories and kind of cross-pollinate, so to speak, and have those great experiences, we get to be better, we get to develop more, and we get to, of course, you know, reach our goals and our successes.

08:37 – Roli Edema

Exactly.

08:38 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So I wanted to switch gears a little bit, and I want to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an app, a book, or a habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

08:50 – Roli Edema

Yeah. So I think when it comes to a CEO hack, I would recommend personal development planning. So when you go to my website, rollyadermer.com, I offer a free personal development plan template for all my readers. What that essentially is, it's that it's a blueprint for the things that you want to achieve in the years to come. There's a famous quote by Jim Rohn, I believe, that says that if you don't plan out your life, then you'll just fall into someone else's plan, and guess what they have planned for you? Not much. Yeah, exactly. So with personal development planning, you really take that proactive approach.

You break these big goals down into small, actionable steps that you can take. The template I have, for example, is ten pages long. So it's not something that you're just going to rush through. It's something that you really need to take time to work on. It's a constant, continual journey, just like our personal development is. So it's something that we can always work on. I found that personal development planning has helped me a lot. I've had some readers take the plan and they've reported back on the great results they've had themselves just having this time to narrow in on their goals and then work towards them.

10:19 – Gresham Harkless

Absolutely appreciate that. I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So this could be a word of wisdom or piece of advice, it might be something you would tell a client, or if you happen to be a time machine, you might tell your younger business self.

10:32 – Roli Edema

Yeah. So you did mention that I like quotes. That's absolutely true because, you know, like I said, I like exploring, documenting, hearing different things from different people. But one quote I really appreciate is from Steve's case, which is one of, who's one of the founders of AOL. He said that you shouldn't focus on why you can't do something, which is what most people do. You should instead focus on why perhaps you can and be one of the exceptions. I love that because it's like, it just absolutely eliminates the self-doubt. It's like, what are you scared of? What's holding you back? What if you just changed the script? Like, what if you just said that I could be one of the exceptions? You know, when you're starting a business, you might not know anyone within your immediate circle who started the kind of business that you want. But with the Internet, we can find people who are working towards the same goals as us or have achieved them, who might live far away from us, and we have all these resources that we can use to become what we might call an exception. So I really love that.

11:49 – Gresham Harkless

Absolutely appreciate that, nugget. And now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. We're hoping to have different, quote-unquote, CEO's on this show. So, Rowley, what does being a CEO mean to you?

12:01 – Roli Edema

Yeah. So when I think of being a CEO, I've kind of got a little acronym that is constantly exploring opportunities. So, CEO, and I think that's what really separates a CEO from anyone else, really, is being proactive and searching for these opportunities. I often refer to them as hidden opportunities because they're not always going to be right there in your face. But if you just keep working at your craft, you'll notice these opportunities that come out of nowhere. Then as a CEO, you make sure that you really take advantage of them and use them to boost growth in whatever areas of your life you can. So when you're always searching for opportunities, you won't be disappointed. You'll definitely find something.

12:57 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah. And to me, it also speaks to, like, the gift is in the process or as you mentioned, the constant, you know, exploring of those opportunities. When we start to realize that, we don't get, I guess, you know, depressed or down when we reach the goal or don't even reach the goal, because the real gift is in the process of constantly finding these opportunities and looking for them, exploring our craft, and continue to kind of get better at that. I think once we lean into that, then that's ultimately the biggest gift that we can have.

13:26 – Roli Edema

Yeah, you definitely have to enjoy the journey as well as the destination. There's so much that can be enjoyed on the journey. Even the process of failure teaches you so much. So I definitely agree with that.

13:38 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah. And failure goes along with success, and that's something that we also have to keep in mind and remind ourselves of. So Roley. Truly appreciate that definition and I appreciate your time even more. What I wanted to do is just pass you the mic, so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional that you can let our readers and listeners know and of course how best they can get a hold of you and find out about all the awesome things that you're working on.

13:59 – Roli Edema

Yeah, for sure. So you can find me at roliademo.com. I really recommend, like I mentioned before, just start grabbing your own copy of the free personal development plan template that I have there. It's something that you can work towards yourself and I think will bring a lot of clarity to your goals. Also, you can find me on Twitter at @veliadema. So I'm always open to hearing your stories and anything you want to share with me about how you're progressing with your own personal development plan. So feel free to reach out to me that way.

14:38 – Gresham Harkless

Absolutely. And we'll definitely have the links and information in the show notes as well too, so that everybody can follow up with you. It kind of reminds me of this quote since we were talking about quotes so much that planning to fail is failing to plan or planning to fail. Yes, failing to plan. So when I think that we don't lean into that, our failure to plan is planning to fail, if I could say that right. When we remind ourselves of that, then we start to realize that we do need to take those actions. So I appreciate you providing that template as an opportunity for us to make sure that we are planning for success. Thank you so much again for your time and I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.
