IAM2833 – Why Specialized Knowledge Creates Unique Value
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Generalist’s Growth Trap
Many builders mistakenly believe that to grow, they must generalize—covering more ground and serving more people to maximize reach. However, attempting to be everything to everyone often dilutes your message and decreases your perceived value. In this episode, inspired by a conversation with author and entrepreneur Joe Cannon, we explore why focused expertise is actually the most direct path to establishing authority.
The Power of Deep Specialization
Specialization is not just about choosing a narrow industry; it is about understanding a specific problem or human profile so deeply that your solution becomes undeniable. When you focus your knowledge, you are able to connect with your audience on a human level, speaking directly to the pain points that keep them up at night.
This depth creates a level of confidence in your clients that a generalist simply cannot match. Real specialization doesn't limit your opportunities—it builds the trust necessary to capture them.
Engineering Authority Through Your Offering
The core takeaway for any leader is that your “Offering and Product Pillar” is strengthened by credibility. You do not need to know everything; you simply need to know something deeply enough to make a real impact. Ask yourself this critical question: “Where could I go deeper instead of broader in my expertise?”. Choosing depth over breadth is where true authority grows and where you ultimately create the unique value your market is looking for.

When you understand deeply a specific problem, your value increases dramatically. For builders that are working and grinding in their business every single day, this is a key shift. Here's the thing. You don't need to know everything. You need to know something deeply. Though. If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say, on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Many builders try to generalize their expertise and their knowledge, serve more people, cover more ground, do more, essentially. But here's something that we often don't speak about. It's this idea of specialization. In episode number 45, I spoke with Joe Cannon. He's an author, entrepreneur, training personal trainers, and helping people with rhabdomyolysis. And we had a phenomenal conversation around that specialization piece. What really stood out was how focused expertise actually creates authority. So often we think that by focusing or specializing, we're actually serving less people, when in reality we're actually able to connect deeper with the people we want to serve and be able to create a solution and speak directly to them and understand exactly their pain points, that human part, and all the aspects of how we're able to solve. When you understand deeply a specific problem, your value increases dramatically. For builders that are working and grinding in their business every single day, this is a key shift. Here's the thing, you don't need to know everything. You need to know something deeply though. And here's the reality. Real specialization builds trust. Now, don't get it, or look at it from a perspective of if I just niche down into this one industry, this one segment, then I'm going to be able to solve everything. Understand it from a industry perspective, it can be that, don't get me wrong, but understand it from a being able to solve a problem. For example, if you are a podcaster, but you understand your audience, you understand exactly what questions they have and their pain point and what things are keeping them up at night. You may not necessarily have one industry that you're focusing, but you understand their psychology, that human psychology on such a deep level, you're able to make sure that you're asking the right questions or being able to bring the right people in. So that specialization does not necessarily have to be service industry specific. It could be very much so person or profile or avatar of that person and understanding their pain points and what they're going through and how to solve them. And when people see depth, they feel that confidence. Where does this come up? I touched on that human part, which is definitely an aspect of it, but it also ties very much, probably more strongly into the offering product pillar. Why? The service product that you're, you're. You've developed and be able to impact the people that you want to serve. That's what this is going to help to support and help to provide credibility for. And here's a question worth asking. Where could I go deeper instead of broader in my expertise and my knowledge? Why do you ask that question? Because that's where authority grows and that's where you're able to make the impact that you ultimately want to make. I had a phenomenal episode with Joe. We talked around specialization, training and how expertise creates that opportunity for you to be able to serve and make that impact with the clients and customers you want to.
