IAM2834 – Why Sustainable Performance Comes from Encouragement, Not Exhaustion
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Illusion of Pressure-Driven Progress
Many builders operate under the belief that constant pressure—pushing harder, demanding more, and expecting better—is the primary driver of performance. However, negative pressure often creates resistance rather than results. In this episode, inspired by a conversation with personal trainer Megan, we explore why sustainable performance comes from encouragement, not from exhaustion or just pushing indefinitely.
Support as a Performance Multiplier
A critical secret to high-level execution is the environment you create for yourself and your team. When people feel supported, they perform differently and are able to reach a much higher altitude in their work. While pressure can be a tool for growth, it is most effective when channeled through positive reinforcement rather than demeaning or exhausting methods.
By integrating rest and pausing into your strategy, you can actually elevate your execution level to an entirely different stratosphere.
Engineering a Culture of Growth
The core takeaway for any CEO is found in the “Human and People Pillar”: mindset fundamentally shapes your ability to reach and exceed result. A great leader knows how to challenge people to be their best selves while building them up rather than breaking them down. Ask yourself this critical question: “Am I motivating through pressure, or am I creating an environment where growth actually feels possible?”. Shifting to a supportive mentality is what ultimately builds the consistent confidence needed for long-term success.

Many builders believe pressure creates performance, and I've been one of those builders. Push harder, demand more, expect better, and expect more too. But here's a little secret I want to let you in on. Pressure doesn't always produce progress. In episode number 46 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with a personal trainer. Her name's Megan. She spoke about her own positivity, self love and happiness. What really came up during this conversation was how impactful mindset is to influence and make and get us to those results. Here's something small but mighty. People feel supported. They perform differently. You see this in so many different ways. Whether we're talking about fitness, of course we're talking about creating a culture within your organization, or just you yourself. When you Feel supported, you feel like you have that environment, it's going to allow you to get to a higher altitude. For builders working in their business, this shows up in how you lead yourself and also others as well. When you have that negative pressure, it creates resistance. Positive reinforcement creates that momentum that you ultimately are looking for. And here's the real takeaway. Sustainable performance comes from encouragement, not from exhaustion. Not just pushing, pushing, pushing, pushing, pushing. That hustle culture is such a huge and real thing. But understand like how rest, pausing those things actually allow you to be able to take up your execution level to an entirely different stratosphere. And when you're able to do that, you're able to not only get the results that you wanted to, a lot of times you're able to do better than that. When people feel confident, they show up more consistently. Where does this show up? I touched on it a little bit. The human people pillar. How mindset shapes your execution, your ability to be able to reach and exceed those results that you have. Here's something you want to ask yourself. Am I, as a leader, as a CEO, entrepreneur and business owner, am I motivating through pressure, or am I creating an environment where growth actually feels possible and it feels like something that can actually happen? That distinction matters tremendously. Now don't get me wrong, I'm definitely a person that feels like pressure. No pressure, no diamonds. But I think there's a way in order to create that pressure in a positive environment so that you can get the results rather than maybe demeaning or hurting or mentally abusing people. Just some of those things, I don't believe, provide the results that you're looking for so you can create a positive environment and be create a supportive environment at the same time. Challenge people to be their best selves. And I think that's where there's a huge distinction of rather than you're breaking somebody down to break them down, you break them down. Not even have to have that opportunity to break them down. You actually build them up and you understand where you can rebuild some things. So I think it's a process, it's a fine line, don't get me wrong. But I think a lot of it is the mentality that you have in terms of approaching your clients, your customers, or even the people that are on your team. During this episode, we talked around mindset positivity and how self belief actually will impact that performance. Phenomenal interview, phenomenal conversation. So you have to definitely check this out.
