IAM2812 – The Importance of Narrowing Your Focus

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Trap of the Generalist

Many builders fall into the trap of trying to appeal to everyone, believing that broader reach naturally leads to more opportunity. However, when you claim to look for everyone, you often end up looking for no one. In this episode, we explore insights from Leslie Logan, a Pilates teacher and author who helps instructors grow their businesses by embracing the power of specialization.

Clarity Over Generalization

While it feels counterintuitive to limit your opportunities by narrowing your focus, clarity actually attracts more than generalization. Think of it like looking for a car: if you search for “any car,” you see everything and nothing; but if you look for a “red eighties Camaro,” you can pinpoint exactly what you need.

By being “specific to be terrific,” you allow your audience to recognize themselves in your message, which builds trust at an accelerated pace.

Engineering True Growth through Specialization

The core takeaway for any CEO is that specialization creates the momentum necessary for long-term success. By drilling down into a defined audience, you can create a tremendous solution because you understand their needs better than anyone else. Ask yourself: “Who do I serve best, and am I speaking directly to their hearts and minds?”. Answering this question often unlocks the true growth and opportunity you have been seeking.

A lot of times, especially in networking, I've always heard if you say your product or service or you're looking for everyone, you're looking for no one. Because that specificity and who you're targeting helps out as far as, like, marketing to be able to, like, really pinpoint who you're targeting. But it also helps you to drill down and create a tremendous solution. When you're able to understand your audience better than anybody else.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. Many builders try to appeal to everyone. Think about it. More people means more opportunities, means more reach. But here it is. Growth often happens when you narrow your focus. In episode number two, I spoke with Leslie Logan and we spoke about many things, but she's an author Pilates teacher, and she helps other instructors and studio owners grow their businesses. And what came up in this growth? The idea of growth is this idea of specialization. Instead of serving everyone's needs, she focused on on a specific audience with a specific need that she had. For builders working on their business every single day, it feels very counterintuitive. When you're able to understand your audience better than anybody else, you don't want to limit your opportunity. So that's why you say, I can work with anybody and everybody. But clarity actually attracts more than generalization. Think about it. If you say, hey, I'm looking for this car, and you don't describe anything about the car, I'm just looking for a car. You just see cars everywhere. But if you say, I'm looking for a red 80s Camaro, then all of a sudden you start to pinpoint that a little bit more. You get a visual. You start to understand that, okay, this is exactly what the person is, and that sticks with that. Be specific to be terrific. The real takeaway is that when you speak directly to a defined audience, your message becomes even crystal clear. People recognize themselves in what you say, and that recognition builds trust quickly. This connects naturally to the CBNation strategy pillar. Choosing focus over over breath. Here's something worth asking and considering. Who do I serve best, and am I speaking directly to them? Do they know when I say something, I'm talking directly to their hearts, minds, and their souls? That answer often unlocks true growth. This episode we talked around a lot. Niche marketing, niche marketing, business growth, and how specialization creates momentum. Leslie has so much knowledge and information on him, so grateful that she shared this. And I think it's just something I really wanted to hammer home. That really impactful specialization idea and how it's so counterintuitive to a lot of things that we hear, but it's something that can really set you up well for growth.
