IAM2825 – The Importance of Taking Control of Your Health for Business Success

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man in a polo shirt next to text about the importance of taking control of your health for business success, with a collage of faces in the background.

Health as the Foundation of High Performance

Many high-achievers treat health as a secondary priority, often waiting for a catastrophic event before they finally address their physical well-being. However, as a builder, it is critical to recognize that energy is what fuels your professional performance. In this episode, culinary coach Kristen Caulfield joins us to discuss why wellness isn't separate from success—it is the very engine that supports and fuels it.

The Power of Micro-Habits in Wellness

Highly successful people don't achieve their goals through massive, overnight overhauls; they do it through small, repeated actions. Whether it is better food choices or regular movement, these small daily habits create the energy and focus necessary to excel.

When we ignore the fuel in our tanks, we lose the ability to perform at the level our ventures require.

Engineering a Sustainable CEO Lifestyle

The core takeaway for any CEO is to break out of the “siloed mentality” where business and health are treated as separate entities. Wellness is a foundational building block that allows you to reach greater heights and make a lasting impact. Ask yourself: “What daily choice could I lean on to improve my energy and focus immediately?”. By prioritizing the human part of your business, you set the stage for sustainable growth and long-term success.

Many people treat health as a secondary or they don't even consider their health at all. It's something that's at the bottom of the totem pole and not something that they really consider. It might be something that they address later. They'll take care of it when it's time, or when it's needed, or when something big and catastrophic happens. But that's not the best way to approach your health. You might be asking why that is, and the reason is is health ultimately influence?

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

You might be asking why that is, and the reason is is health ultimately influences everything. It's very foundational to all the things that we're doing. In episode number 40 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with Kristin Cofield and she is the culinary coach that helps people take control of their wellness. And what really came up during this conversation was how small changes actually create big habits. If you look at many of the really highly successful people or the people that accomplish any types of huge goals or aspirations, it starts with small things that are done repeatedly over a long period of time. Think about it. Better food choices, better habits, better energy. It's all very much so in line. And for builders, this is absolutely critical. And energy fuels performance. And as builders, we're often in this hustle mode and this mentality where we're go, go, go to the next thing and the next thing, the next thing. We don't realize we don't have any more fuel in the tank. We don't realize that we don't have the things that are needed so that we can perform at the level that's needed. So we have to make sure we take care of those foundational things. But here's the real takeaway. Often we approach business and life in a very siloed mentality. Business goes here, life goes here, health goes here. But in reality, we have to realize that wellness isn't separate from success. It's very much so aligned. Not only is it aligned, it actually supports, it actually fuels it. It's that foundational building block that allows you to really reach greater heights and to be able to make the impact of why we started, the ventures that we started. And where does this show up? It definitely shows up in the human people pillar, where often we forget about the human part of business and the human part of life. Don't get me wrong, there's obviously the nuts and bolts of business. It's the frameworks, it's the. The KPIs, it's just all those things that are important. But we don't always prioritize health as an aspect of that. But we have to make sure that we understand the human part is such a huge part of everything that we're ultimately hoping to do. Here's a question worth sitting with. What daily choice could I use and lean on to improve my energy and focus immediately? And that's where real change actually begins. It doesn't begin in doing the huge rebuilt things. That actually begins in doing the small things on a regular basis. Having that foundation built and speaking with Kristen, that's one of the things that really came up, how important food is and how that can fuel you to getting to where you want to go. So it could be food, it could be working out, meditating, it could be what you eat in the morning, whatever these things are, understand, like, how important they are in order to fuel you so that you can make the impact that you ultimately want to. This episode explored wellness habits and sustainable health, and it's something you definitely want to listen to, especially because we skip over that human part so much, and especially the things that we're doing to get to that next level.
