IAM2548 – Shifting Paradigms: Why Change is Necessary

A man smiles in front of a colorful, blurred background with podcast details: "Shifting Paradigms: Why Change is Necessary," Blue Star Branding, and episode 2548 with listening platform icons.Gresham Harkless shares a powerful personal experience about sleep training his son, using it as a metaphor for change, growth, and the value of small adjustments.

He discusses trying a new method where the baby is placed down drowsy and picked up when crying, then laid back down once soothed—ultimately teaching the baby to self-soothe.

Gresham realizes that success came not from a massive change but from a subtle shift in approach, and connects this experience to broader life and business insights, especially for people considering entrepreneurship or franchising.

Gresham emphasizes that meaningful change doesn’t always require a complete overhaul; often, we’re closer to success than we think and may already be doing parts of what’s needed without realizing it.

In addition, he advocates for others to reflect on what they can control and change in their own lives, reinforcing the idea that lasting change often starts with us.

Gresham Harkless 00:28

Hello, hello, hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO Podcast. And this is a special episode of our I AM CEO Podcast.

And this is actually going to be a snippet of a snippet, so to speak. I'm just doing an intro because I've been starting to document my journey into starting what is now called Blue Star Franchise.

We're also going to do a kind of sub-site within CB Nation called Franchise CEO. So, you'll see some links in the show notes related to that.

But just wanted to give you a little bit more insight, give you a little bit more color in some of the aspects of why I'm actually doing this.

Because one of the things I was doing as I was going through training to start up this new business was realizing and hearing from the founder of FBA, the Franchise Brokers Association, that it'd be really cool to document your journey going through and building this out.

I think it's something that would be super helpful, obviously for people that are looking for and thinking about starting franchises.

But frankly, if you're starting anything, any type of business, I think it's really cool to kind of just even see the journey and how it's been going from there.

So, I'm going to share a few of those snippets from the, from the first couple of videos that have been created.

But definitely, of course, subscribe to our YouTube, check out a lot more where I figure out exactly where we're going to post this.

So, I'll have that information that's available to you. But regardless, if you're a builder, continue to keep building, continue to do your thing.

The world definitely needs exactly what you're trying to build and needs you to be your unique self.

So, make sure to run your own race, because nobody can run your race like you.

This is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.

Things don't change unless you change or unless things change. And it's so funny, we're doing, I've decided to do some sleep training because our little one is not doing well sleeping.

So, we tried this method of I'm setting him down and putting him up. So, there's a cry out method where you just let the baby cry.

And then there's the method where I learned about just the end of yesterday that he basically put the baby down, and when the baby starts crying, pick the baby up. And then, as soon as the baby is soothed, you put the baby back down, you put the baby back down drowsy so that the baby learns how to be able to be able to self soothe, how to be able to put itself to sleep is I hurt myself to sleep.

And for our son, it's wild because it worked almost immediately. Like I think when I first did it, I said, let me do it at night. So, I did it, had to pick him up, maybe four, five times, something like that. And then he just went out like a light.

I did it again, got up around, I think it was about 12 o'clock, or it was a little, probably 11:30 into 12. Did the same thing again.

That was a little bit harder because I had to feed him, but I'm starting to learn more than anything else, of course it's not around how to put a baby to sleep, but it's very much so around the idea of things have to change. Things don't change unless sometimes you change.

And I think that's where sometimes we run into this complacency. this desire to want comfort, to do what we already know. We already know the output that is going to be.

Whether we want that output or not, sometimes we get stuck in this feeling of like, this is what it is.

I think especially people that are considering franchising, considering starting a business, I think that ends up being a really strong thing to think about, because if we are not getting the things that we want out of life, we have to adjust that as some form, shape, or fashion.

Does that always mean start a business? No, it doesn't necessarily mean you know, leave your full-time job. No, it doesn't necessarily mean that, but it could mean that you have to change something.

You have to change the way you're thinking, the things you're consuming, the way you're driving to work, frankly.

Like something has to change because things won't change unless we change those paradigms, shift those patterns, shift the things that we're doing. And so those habits end up compounding into the life that we see now.

So, if there's anything that's potentially not working, we have to adjust and change. And the really big thing that I took away from my son is that we often think we're a lot farther than we are.

When I literally looked at a YouTube video and tried it, and he went down and slept, it wasn't just because I looked at the YouTube video and it instantly worked.

It's because I'd been doing some variation of it without even knowing what it was, where I noticed that a lot of times, if I would hold him, rock him to sleep, and then put him down, he would cry a little bit.

I would pick him back up, and then get him back to sleep again, and then put him back down.

The reality and only difference is now I'm putting him down when I know he's drowsy.

He might have been drowsy some of the times that I put him down, and you try to keep your hand on him and do all those things, so it's that proverbial, like, you're a lot closer to gold than you think you are, and habits compound upon itself.

So, there might be things that you're doing on a regular basis and think that you're going to have to start from zero or less than zero to get to where you want to be.

But you might have a lot more there than you think. And that's one of the things I like and love about being a franchise broker is understanding those skills, understanding that opportunity, and being able to kind of translate or understand where those specific skills, leadership, managing people, sales, marketing, whatever it might be, can translate into what might be a future franchise, a future business, or whatever that is.

So, I really enjoy that because it's being able to, again, translate or see those things sometimes when people don't see it in themselves, but understand exactly how they're going to translate, and people are going to do an awesome job.

Again, sometimes we have to make that shift and change. Sometimes that shift and change is not as big as we think they are, and it can open up literally anything.

So, as little one starts to wake up, as I go and get him up and done with my brutal flash routine workout, just remember that things don't change unless you change. Things don't change unless things change.

And oftentimes, the thing that we can change is often us. So, take that with you today. See what adjustments and changes, not huge changes, that you can make to kind of see.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. And of course, looking forward to giving you more and more updates.
