IAM2547 – Unveiling the Human Side of Business

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

A smiling man stands beside a graphic that reads “Unveiling the Human Side of Business” and "Blue Star," with podcast platforms and “Episode: 2547” shown at the bottom and top left.In this special episode, Gresham emphasizes the importance of staying connected to the human side of business, especially in roles like consulting or coaching, where the focus can often become overly process-driven.

He shares personal context about managing the demands of work, life, and fatherhood, and uses this as a lens to empathize with the emotional and mental challenges that candidates may also be facing.

Gresham recounts a recent experience with a highly engaged candidate who became unresponsive, only to later reveal he was dealing with significant personal issues.

He also reflects on the broader increase in emotional and mental stress he senses in people today and encourages fellow consultants to create safe, empathetic spaces for their clients.

Gresham Harkless 00:28

Hello, hello, hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO Podcast. And this is a special episode of our I AM CEO Podcast.

And this is actually going to be a snippet of a snippet, so to speak. I'm just doing an intro because I've been starting to document my journey into starting what is now called Blue Star Franchise.

We're also going to do a kind of sub-site within CB Nation called Franchise CEO. So, you'll see some links in the show notes related to that.

But just wanted to give you a little bit more insight, give you a little bit more color in some of the aspects of why I'm actually doing this.

Because one of the things I was doing as I was going through training to start up this new business was realizing and hearing from the founder of FBA, the Franchise Brokers Association, that it'd be really cool to document your journey going through and building this out.
I think it's something that would be super helpful, obviously for people that are looking for and thinking about starting franchises.

But frankly, if you're starting anything, any type of business, I think it's really cool to kind of just even see the journey and how it's been going from there.

So, I'm going to share a few of those snippets from the, from the first couple of videos that have been created.

But definitely, of course, subscribe to our YouTube, check out a lot more where I figure out exactly where we're going to post this.

So, I'll have that information that's available to you. But regardless, if you're a builder, continue to keep building, continue to do your thing.

The world definitely needs exactly what you're trying to build and needs you to be your unique self.

So, make sure to run your own race, because nobody can run your race like you.

This is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.

And, it is day I believe 209 of the Franchise Broker Journey. One of the things I want to talk about is, and I'm sure I've said this many times, is not forgetting about the human part of business.

I've talked about that a lot throughout my journey and juggling all the things, especially with the newborn, and just juggling all the things that life has.

But I think we also have to remember that candidates kind of go through those challenges as well, too.

A lot of times when you're working with as a consultant, coach, whatever it might be, you're obviously trying to guide your client or candidate or whatever, term you might use throughout the process.

But it's so important that we're locked into that human part. We can very much so approach things silos.

Here's this is the goal. This is what you want to do. Try to make that happen.

But I think also like understanding like, we have ups and downs, we have things that go really well for us, we have things that go not so great for us.

And just like honoring that journey and honoring ultimately what that looks like is extremely important.

So, going through this entire process, I have a candidate that I have not been able to get a hold of, and I was finally able to continue to reach out like basically on a weekly basis, and finally touch base with him.

I got a little bit more insight into some personal things that he's going through, and is the person that was along the furthest along in this process that I've seen.

And definitely he made a recommitment, but it doesn't ignore the fact that the things that he's going through, I think so many times when you go through things, you feel like you're by yourself, and you feel like you're alone.

And I'm a man of faith, so I always say you're never, ever alone, one. But two, I think that God is definitely within us as well too.

So often, you can find people that are around you that are able to connect with you, that are able to love on you, that are able to be there for you.

And I think that that ends up being such a huge thing. So, I think as we go through this business journey, we of course want to be able to hit those goals and be able to reach those and see how that happens.

But I think, and I don't know this, I'm not a psychologist. I haven't read any data or studies, but I just feel, it might just be me getting older, but I just feel like there's more of a stress.

There's more, there's a lot emotionally and mentally happening with people than there ever has been.

And I think those stressors are starting to ebb over into person's day-to-day work or things that they're doing or things that they're not doing, or if they want to start a franchise or whatever that might be.

So, I think one of the things that, you know, you take away is that you don't always get to control from a day-to-day perspective exactly all the external things, but you can control your reaction to it.

You can know that, hey, maybe it is time to take a break, or hey, maybe it's time to lean more into it.

And I think understanding that and have that master yourself ends up being such a huge thing.

But I think, frankly, being able to kind of understand that from a coach, consultant, client, or somebody that's providing advice, your advisor, whatever title you might have, is going to be equally huge.

So, just going through this process and making those things happen is what we ultimately can do. And we can see how everything just goes from there.

But yeah, it's a journey. We've taken some steps. And we'll also kind of see what happens from here.

But yeah, we're super excited around everything that's happening and just taking it from there.

And we'll see ultimately how this all plays out. It might have been that human outreach that, hey, I'm so sorry.

And I am very sorry that he's going through the challenges that he's going through. But I just want to try to create that safe space and make sure that he's comfortable, make sure that he's heard.

And I think that with that being said, we'll see how everything goes. And we'll ultimately kind of take it from there.

Please let me know if there's anything I could do to help. And of course, looking forward to giving you more and more updates.
