IAM2665 – Running the Long‑Term Race in Business
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Journey and Vision
Gresham Harkless opens the episode by reflecting on the importance of staying afloat amid a busy schedule, then using that stability as a springboard for bigger achievements. He outlines his current project, Blue Star Franchise, and explains that he’s documenting the startup process on his “I AM CEO” podcast and on YouTube. The purpose is two‑fold: to provide a roadmap for anyone considering a franchise or any new venture, and to create a “Franchise CEO” sub‑channel within the broader CB Nation community.
Challenges, Learnings, and Real‑World Results
He candidly shares the reality of juggling client emergencies, personal obligations, and the inevitable setbacks that come with building a business. Over the past year, only two deals closed—one from within his own network and another from a friend—yet he still perceives strong alignment with his overall mission. Harkless emphasizes that early‑year losses are normal, that opportunities exist if you keep cultivating them, and that a “marathon mindset” is essential for long‑term progress.
Re‑Prioritization and Forward Momentum
Facing a confluence of professional rebuilds (digital‑marketing systems, franchise infrastructure) and personal pressures (condo issues, family responsibilities), Harkless resolves to re‑prioritize, carve out dedicated time, and lean into the work that generates the most impact. He argues that a business should not be judged solely on its first‑year performance; perseverance, continuous improvement, and running the “marathon race” will ultimately unlock the phenomenal results he envisions.

I think if you are able to keep your head above water, like at this point, and then you're able to kind of build upon that and continue to kind of build in, some really phenomenal things can happen. So I just have to really, like, re-prioritize, you know, look at what I'm trying to do and just kind of go backwards from there. I think there's a tremendous amount of opportunity in all the things that I could do. It's just a matter of saying, hey, let's create the space, create the time, and just kind of lean more and more into that.
(00:37)Hello, hello, hello, this is Gresh from the I AM CEO podcast. And this is a special episode, episode number 2287 of our I AM CEO podcast. And this is actually going to be a snippet of a snippet, so to speak. I'm just doing an intro because I've been starting to document my journey into starting what is now called Blue Star Franchise. We're also going to do a kind of subcite within CB Nation called a franchise CEO.
So you'll see some links in the show notes related to that. But I just want to give you a little bit more insight, give you a little bit more color in some of the aspects of why I'm actually doing this. Because one of the things I was doing as I was going through training to start up this new business was realizing and hearing from the founder of FBA, the Franchise Brokers Association, that it'd be really cool to document your journey. Going through and building this out.
I think it's something that will be super helpful Obviously for people that are looking for and thinking about starting franchises, but frankly if you're starting anything any type of business I think it's really cool to kind of just even see the journey and how it's been going from there So I'm gonna share a few of those snippets from the from the first couple of videos that have been created. But definitely, of course, subscribe to our YouTube. Check out a lot more where I figure out exactly where Harry Glenner posted.
So I'll have that information that's available to you. But regardless, if you're a builder, continue to keep building, continue to do your thing. The world definitely needs exactly what you're trying to build. It needs you to be your unique self.
So make sure to run your own race because nobody can run your race like you. This is Grass signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.
(02:05)So I'm about knocking on the door to a year, not a year already, and I started to just chat with some of the people that were in my class.
We would have a bi-weekly, bi-monthly I should say, get together and I sent out a message because it was on my calendar but I had an issue with a client that I needed to put in that spot. And of course, I had another issue with the client bed I had to fit in, which is just part of the course, part of the process, part of what it looks like. We're clients, so you need to be told right then and right there. You have to kind of drop everything, and that's part of the business, part of the digital marketing business.
And sometimes, having those conversations ends up clearing up a lot of issues, clearing up a lot of things and being able to kind of make sure they're in the same place. So, anyways, I sent a message saying, hey, you know, I don't know if we're still meeting or we should just kind of pause. We haven't met in months or anything. And then, you know, both of them got back and said, hey, I'm dealing with too much or hey, I'm sweating.
Bye. time to places. Needless to say, I'd say that I'm the last one standing, kind of. And I don't think I was fully all the way in.
Whether I made it or not, I tried to be all the way in. Trust me, I did. But as soon as, like, things started happening, something else I had to do, just so. I'm not going to let you go crazy just to think that.
First of all, between the three of us, I think only two deals were closed. Two of those deals, out of two of those deals, one of them was one of us that bought into this opportunity. The other one was a friend those are the whole deals and it's crazy to kind of think i just think that from the time and energy that i've spent um and the money and resources i've invested it's crazy that i'm sitting right here but i still feel like there's an opportunity i still feel like it complements a lot of what i'm doing which is why i'm not as I'm just going to not continue on because I feel like it's very much so in alignment.
I just have to figure out how best to do it from like a marathon mindset. And you know, had I hopped into that time machine a year ago, that's probably what I would have said. But I do think I still have a lot of access and opportunity to be able to kind of do better. I've heard people not do well on their first year.
Frankly, it happens in business where a lot of times you'll take a loss. I just thought this was going to be a little bit different, mainly because of the networking and things that I have in place. However, it only works if you work it. You can then just say, like, I haven't really worked it.
