CEO Nugget: These are the deeper resources. Business advise.
“If you can happen to a time machine, what will you tell to your younger business self?”
- Do the thing that you were called to do.
- Make sure you are making an impact in the zone of genius, your gift, the thing you want to do to try to impact.
- Make sure what you’re doing is in alignment with the mission, vision, goals, and the human aspect of the business.
- The journey takes time, if someone you look up to has gone through failures, make deeper research into their lives.
- Book: Outliers, The Story of Success, mentions the 10,000-hour rule, the time they put in to be successful does not happen overnight.
- Build yourself. Your emotional well-being is one of the biggest things that determine your success. As well as your mind space and mindset.
- Don't compare your strategy to others, and grab them all. Just pick the top 3 ingredients that are audible to the success strategy you are trying to accomplish.

00:48 – Gresham Harkless
Hello, Hello, Hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO podcast. And this is episode number 1231 1,2,3,1 of the Im CEO podcast. This episode focuses on the CEO Nugget. As you have listened to the last couple of episodes, I've gone down each of the typical questions that I asked during the show. Everything from the story down to the CEO is defined. And this one is the CEO nugget. This is usually where I switch gears a little bit. So I talked about our overarching goal, which is visibility plus resources times connections equals success.
This focused more on those resources. These are the things that the apps, the books, the habits that you heard about with the hack. That's part of the resources as well. And also this as well too. We're getting a little bit more into the deeper end of the resources and things that you knew. And the way that I usually phrase this question, I didn't initially, actually, someone who was a guest on the show said the way that they phrased the question was so much better than the one I started with. And I always ask for advice, business advice, and nuggets and habits.
[restrict paid=”true”]
Not necessarily habits, but, you know, advice that you would have. The way he helped me to come to this question was by asking if you could hop into a time machine, what would you tell your younger business self? And that's something that has been huge because it allows people to, not only if they work with CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners in that b two b space, they get to, I used to say, what would you tell your favorite client?
So they get to show their expertise, show exactly what it is that they do, why they do it, and what makes them unique. This question I love because it allows you to really think about maybe some of the things that you struggled with, maybe some of the things you didn't know about, and what you might whisper. You wouldn't necessarily change things. You often hear that I wouldn't go back and change anything. But I might tell myself this, I might whisper this to myself, and I always kind of go through that process whenever I hear someone's answer.
And I always ask myself, like, what would I tell myself? Honestly, I would literally probably take all of the episodes of the Im CEO podcast and tell myself to just listen to all these and understand that it's part of the process. And part of the process is the great things that happen. Part of the process is the not-so-great things that happen. But one of the biggest things that I say, and I'll go through a few things, is I would tell my younger business self, it doesn't happen overnight. You often hear the quote, the secret to the overnight successes.
It takes ten years or more. That's how I probably would add it in ten years or more where you want to go, and what you want to do, especially if you are really trying to disrupt and change things. And you might necessarily, might be bootstrapping and you may not have the capital. And not to say capital is an excuse, but just kind of understanding what you're trying to do, you want to make sure that you are in it for the long haul. One of the things I often will still tell myself is to make sure that you're doing the thing that you were called to do.
Make sure that you're doing and making an impact in your zone of genius, your gift, the thing that you want to do to try to impact. I think very often we can get very stuck on money and revenue, and I think to a certain degree, you want to get to a certain point where you can make sure that you are able to, obviously just pay your bills, but also to make sure that you're able to help the people on your team pay their bill. You're able to do all those things. There's a certain kind of break-even point that depends on everybody, and it's unique for all.
But after a certain point, you can get into the space where you're constantly trying to hire employees and bring on a bigger team, and a, and you get into the, let's just make more and more money, let's bring on more and more people. But you really forget about what I like to call the human aspect of business. So I would definitely say make sure that what you're doing is in alignment with your mission, vision, goals, and frankly, the human aspect of business.
So if I was going to tell my younger business self that it was really make sure that you do that due diligence in the beginning so you understand your mission, vision, and goals are for the organization, but also for your life as a whole. And make sure you do that work to try to understand that. But understand life is a journey. It's not going to be a straight line. If you really want to do something, this is me talking to my younger business self. Delve down deep into somebody that you look up to and realize that it's not a straight path. It does take time.
They have had failures. They have had things that didn't go well and really do some deep research into their lives. Also check out this book called, which is more of a Hat, but called Outliers and the Secret to Success, the 10,000 hours, the time that people put in to be successful. It's not a snap of the finger. It doesn't happen overnight. So I think really from a very, from a headspace standpoint and intellectual standpoint, to be able to say, this is what success looks like, this is the reality of success. But I think that also helps out as far as the emotional part.
As we've seen over this past year and a half, two years, your emotional well-being, where you are emotional, is probably gonna be one of the biggest things to determine your success. Also, knowing that your mindset, your mind space, the things that you're saying you're doing, you know, that's going to also help you to build your, your success. So really delve down deeper into those foundational elements. So don't zip over them, scoot over them. Of course, there's a space and time for being and knowing and becoming an expert.
And what is it you for continuing to learn and to get better? But do not miss the part where you build yourself individually so that you can succeed. So those are probably the biggest, like CEO nuggets that I would definitely say there's loads and loads of more. I talked a little bit about telling clients that, you know, you're in the media business, especially comparing your marketing strategy. Like you are going to the grocery store and getting ingredients. Don't grab every ingredient to try to make sweet potato pies, which I always say, but apple pie, don't put sweet potatoes in your apple pie, don't put ketchup in your, I don't know, you're a cake that you're making.
You know, don't do those things because you hear that you should do them. Do them because they strategically make sense of what it is that you're trying to accomplish. So I say that over and over again. But if there is one little nugget side piece nugget that I would throw in. I would say, hey, make sure that you are staying true to those three questions that I asked in the very beginning to check it out. Another episode, your target market, your goals, and what success looks like. And of course, the resources that you have available to you.
Don't bring home to the grocery store, just pick or choose one, maybe the top three of of those integral ingredients to be successful. Don't feel like you have to do all the things you want to know about, all the things you want to be aware of, all the things you maybe even want to, you know, have those things set up to go out from your main kind of ingredients. But just understand you don't have to necessarily do all the things to be successful.
