IAM2916 – You Are a Media Company꞉ Build Trust and Visibility
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Trap of Chasing Short-Term Attention
A pervasive and exhausting roadblock for modern builders is treating marketing as a series of disconnected, reactionary tactics. Far too many entrepreneurs assume that running a media operation belongs exclusively to major corporations, influencers, or publishers with dedicated production teams. The reality is simple: if you have a message, a target audience, and a desire to communicate, you are already operating like a media company whether you realize it or not. In this special 100th episode milestone of the I AM CEO podcast—featuring a unique full-circle interview with Kathy Harkless—we break down why you are already a media company and how building a structured platform drives compounding authority.
The Visibility Pillar: Media as a System for Building Trust
True execution within the Visibility Pillar proves that modern visibility is far bigger than renting space on social algorithms. Media is simply the intentional transfer of ideas from one person to another—whether through deep-dive blogs, client conversations, podcasts, or 1:1 interactions.
Operating as a media entity does not require becoming a full-time content creator; it means structuring your business to systematically educate, document, curate, and connect. By building robust operational pipelines using tools like Basecamp and Acuity to capture ideas and schedule distribution, you transform everyday customer questions and internal insights into long-term publishing assets.
Leading with Perspective Before the Product Sale
The core takeaway for any CEO is recognizing that prospective clients rarely buy products or services in a vacuum; they need your perspective before they ever trust your offer. When you repurpose a single conversation into articles, videos, and short-form insights, your visibility compounds exponential value over time.
Your internal expertise is an enterprise asset that deserves a system to travel through. Ask yourself this defining question: “If your business committed to fully operating like a media company starting today, what specific insights, processes, or perspectives would you begin documenting and publishing intentionally?”. Building a media infrastructure around your unique perspective is the ultimate lever required to build trust before the sales conversation ever begins.

A lot of builders think media is something separate from the business. They think it belongs to big brands, influencers, publications, or companies with production teams. But if you have a message, a market, and a way to communicate, you are already operating like a media company, whether you realize it or not.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

A lot of builders think media is something separate from the business. They think it belongs to big brands, influencers, publications, or companies with production teams. But if you have a message, a market, and a way to communicate, you are already operating like a media company, whether you realize it or not. Episode number 100 of the I Am CEO Podcast was a little bit different. Why? Because episode number 1 featured my mom, Kathy Harkless, and episode number 100, she interviewed me. I interviewed her during episode 1. She interviewed me during episode 100. And at the time of the conversation, it centered around my work with CEO Blog Nation, Blue 60 Media, and the idea that entrepreneurs can build their own media companies. The idea I want to run with is one that's simple, and you may have heard me say it before, is that you are a media company. Now, before you flick off the recording or the listening— or listening to this podcast, that does not mean that every builder needs to become a full-time content creator. It means your business has the ability to educate, connect, document, interview, publish, curate, and build trust through media. After interviewing thousands and thousands of entrepreneurs, one of the things I've seen is that visibility compounds when you build a platform instead of only chasing attention. Think about this: a blog post can become a podcast topic, a podcast can become a video, a video can become a short clip, a customer question can become an article, a conversation can become a connection, a connection can become an opportunity. Just think about those things for a little bit. Often we think of media only meaning social media, only meaning TikTok, only meaning LinkedIn. But I truly feel like media is simply the transference of one thought to another person, of one thing to another person. That could be done in communication, that could be done through social media, that could be done through a blog post or a podcast or an advertisement, whatever it is. But just understand you are already participating in this media company mentality. This connects directly to the visibility pillar, largely because visibility is not just about marketing. It's how builders create trust before the sales or conversations ever happening. During the podcast, I talked around tools like Acuity and Basecamp, but the bigger point is that media needs systems. If you want to build your own media company, you need to have a way to capture ideas, schedule conversations, organize content, and move things from concept to published asset. For builders, this matters because your expertise and your experience is not just something to use privately. It can become content that serves, teaches, attracts and connects with people. Here's something worth thinking about a little bit more. If your business already had to act like a media company, what would you start documenting, publishing, or sharing more intentionally? Because the audience may not only need your product, they may need your perspective before they're ready to trust the product. This episode is definitely one worth revisiting, not just because it's me and featured my mom, it's because it's something that you should really consider if you've ever been thinking about how to turn your message, relationships, and expertise into a platform and Don't get me wrong, that platform does not have to sound as big as it sounds. It could literally just be you having one-on-one conversations with people, but understand you still are operating like a media company when you're doing that.
