IAM2915 – Freedom Has a Cost꞉ Build a Why That Survives Uncertainty
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Trap of Romanticizing Freedom
A pervasive roadblock for high-performing builders is desiring ultimate freedom without fully accepting its true cost. Entrepreneurial autonomy demands trading predictability for full responsibility, certainty for constant risk, and familiar comfort for the challenge of constructing a model that supports both your vision and your life. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from former fitness studio owner turned business coach Nicole Spencer on episode 99 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why freedom needs a strong enough why—and how to navigate uncertainty to scale sustainably.
The Human and Financial Pillars: Turning Passion Into Profit
True execution at the intersection of the Human and Financial Pillars proves that passion alone cannot keep an enterprise afloat. Many mission-driven entrepreneurs fall into the trap of overextending themselves to serve everyone else while ignoring their own financial realities, ultimately resulting in severe burnout.
Building a sustainable business demands an authentic conversion process and a profitable financial framework that supports the founder as well as the mission. Your underlying purpose must be powerful enough to sustain you, while your business model remains structured enough to deliver the lifestyle and impact you set out to achieve.
Building Through Uncertainty with Radical Support
The core takeaway for any CEO is recognizing that true freedom is not merely about escaping a traditional structure; it is about intentionally building an enterprise you are fully prepared to take responsibility for. When sales cycles slow down or tough operational decisions arise, a superficial desire for freedom quickly crumbles without a deeply rooted emotional “why”.
Holding a powerful vision does not mean walking the path alone. Being relentless about personal growth, seeking active mentorship, and building a supportive ecosystem are critical components of maintaining executive resilience. Ask yourself this defining question: “Is your underlying why strong enough to carry you through the exact uncertainty that your freedom requires?”. Aligning your personal drive with a sound financial structure is the ultimate lever required to master uncertainty and build an enduring, profitable business.

A lot of builders say that they want freedom, but freedom has a cost. You trade certainty for uncertainty, predictability for responsibility, and sometimes comfort for the chance to build something that actually fits your life and impact. That's what stood out to me in episode number 99 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Nicole Spencer. And at the time of our conversation, Nicole was a former fitness studio owner turned business— small business coach. She helped entrepreneurs grow profitable fitness businesses through her authentic conversion.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the iMCO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So, in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also My 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content: visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

And at the time of our conversation, Nicole was a former fitness studio owner turned business Small business coach. She helped entrepreneurs grow profitable fitness businesses through her authentic conversion. The idea that really came up during this conversation is that freedom needs a strong enough why. Why does this matter? It matters because freedom sounds exciting until the uncertainty hits. Slow month, the hard decision, the client issue, the offer that doesn't convert. The moment when it would be easier to go back to something more predictable. That's when I want freedom has to become more than a phrase. During our conversation, Nicole and I talked around mentorship, having a coach, and focusing on constant personal growth, being maniacal ultimately about it. I think that that supports the same idea because a strong why doesn't mean you do it alone. In fact, if the mission matters, if it truly, truly, truly matters, you should be willing to get the support that helps you to hold it Well, this connects to the human and the financial pillars. The business needs a reason strong enough to sustain the builder and a model strong enough to support the freedom being promised. Nicole's work with fitness businesses also makes the lesson very, very practical. Many fitness entrepreneurs are passionate about helping people, but passion still has to become a profitable business model. Otherwise, the founder burns out serving people. And serving everyone, but ultimately not themselves. Something worth spending a little bit more time on is, is your why strong enough to carry you through uncertainty your freedom ultimately requires? Because freedom is not just escaping something, it is building something you are willing to take responsibility for. If you've been craving freedom but feeling the weight of uncertainty, this conversation with Nicole is definitely one worth checking out.
