The Trap of the Digital Screen Vacuum

A pervasive and quietly damaging roadblock for modern builders is creating technology that traps users inside a screen rather than enhancing their real-world existence. It is entirely too easy to build calendars overflowing with work, software suites packed with features, and platforms full of notifications, only to leave users trapped in narrow, isolated routines. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from social planning app founder Michael on episode 91 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why you shouldn't let the screen shrink your life—and how to build technology that helps people live better.

The Human and Technology Pillars: Tech as a Vehicle, Not the Destination

True execution at the intersection of the Human and Technology Pillars proves that even the most sophisticated digital systems must ultimately serve a human-centric purpose. As developers, founders, and creators, it is dangerously easy to fall in love with the technical build—the sales funnels, the app architecture, and the software stack—while completely losing sight of the actual life transformation behind it.

Your digital assets are merely vehicles. The true enterprise value lies in what becomes possible for the human being using them. When product development shifts from a selfish agenda to a collective focus on genuine human connection, you build solutions that naturally foster deep user trust and authentic adoption.

Designing for Connection Over Attention Capture

The core takeaway for any CEO is to critically evaluate whether your products, services, or content hubs are expanding human capability or simply adding another tedious item to your audience's daily task list. Premier digital tools do not merely hoard attention or generate endless digital noise; they actively empower users to become more alive, capable, and connected to the world around them.

To build an enduring venture in a tech-saturated market, you must stop designing systems that trap attention and start engineering platforms that enrich real-world experiences. Ask yourself this defining question: “Is the software, service, or content you are releasing helping your users live better, or is it just giving them one more demanding interface to manage?”. Aligning your product design with genuine human progress is the ultimate lever required to eliminate market noise and scale a high-impact enterprise.

It's easy to be connected to everything and still feel disconnected from life. We can have calendars full of work, phones full of apps, and still fall into the same routine, same places, same habits, and some narrow version of what's possible. That's what stood out to me in episode number 91 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Michael. At the time of our conversation, Michael had founded Kibbe, a social planning app designed to help people discover meaningful things to do in their own city and around the world.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresham. For over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So, in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show. But also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content: visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

And here's the idea I want to really spend some more time with. Technology should help us live more, not disappear deeper into the screen, if that makes sense. Michael, during our conversation, talked about returning from Australia with a different perspective. He had experienced what it felt like to explore more, to meet people, to try new things, and to live with more balance. That experience taught him and led him to build something that can nudge people towards discovering what life truly has to offer. Now that's the builder lesson. Because many of us create tools, services, content, and systems. But the deeper question is whether we're building— whether what we're building is actually helping people become more alive, more connected, more capable, or ultimately more aware. Michael says something that connects to this idea. It's not just about you and I, it's about we and us. Even the way he talked about how to win friends and influence people circled back to understanding people, communicating better, and working with others instead of just pushing your own agenda. That's why it's such a powerful CEO hack. This connects to the human and technology pillars largely because technology is powerful, but the strongest technology still has to serve a human outcome. This matters because for builders, it's easy to fall in love with the product and forget the life change behind it. The app, the funnel, the platform, the service, the software— these are all vehicles. The real value is what becomes possible for the person using it. Here's a question worth thinking about a little bit more: is what you're building helping people live better Or is it just giving them one more thing that they have to manage? Because the absolute best tools don't just capture attention, they expand what people can ultimately experience. If you've been considering or thinking about how to build technology or content that creates more connection instead of more noise, this conversation with Michael is definitely one worth listening to.
