IAM2895 – Leadership Is Not Just Getting People to Follow

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Trap of Position-Based Authority

A pervasive roadblock for scaling builders is confusing formal executive positioning with genuine, trust-based leadership. There is a vast structural gulf between simply having a team of individuals who report directly to you and becoming the kind of leader people actually want to follow. In this episode, pulling high-leverage insights from leadership development strategist and CEO Hayley on episode 86 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why leadership is built through relationships rather than raw authority—and how scaling your vision requires moving beyond the limits of your own drive.

The Human Pillar: Authentic Networks Over Shallow Transactions

True execution within the Human Pillar dictates that businesses designed for long-term market endurance are built by leaders who master people, not just product design and financial metrics. Far too many entrepreneurs treat professional networking as a series of shallow transactions, focusing entirely on what an individual can immediately do for them.

By shifting your focus toward building deep, authentic relationships, you transform your network from a collection of business cards into a robust engine where mutual support, mentorship, accountability, and real opportunity can naturally flow. This human connection is what ultimately makes your broader enterprise vision believable and actionable to those around you.

Humility, Delegation, and Scaling Through Trust

The core takeaway for any CEO is having the intellectual humility to realize that you cannot—and should not—execute every operational task yourself, even if you possess the technical skills to do so. True leadership requires the clarity to recruit the right talent, delegate tasks effectively to virtual and on-site support, and allow others to take ownership of the work.

If you want your organization to scale, you must stop trying to carry the operational weight alone and start building on a foundation of trust. Ask yourself this defining question: “Are you building a network that only knows what you do, or one that actually knows how you think, lead, serve, and show up?”. Shifting from positioning to relationship-driven leadership is the ultimate lever required to smash through your organizational bottlenecks and scale with absolute integrity.

Leadership is built through relationships, not just authority for builders that matter tremendously. Because as a business grows, you can't rely solely on your own drive. You need people around you. You need team members, collaboration mentors, partners, advisors, people who see things that you ultimately don't see.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privile of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of the episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

There's a difference between having people report to you and becoming the kind of leader people actually want to follow. One is about positioning, the other is actually about trust. That's what came up for me in episode number 86 of the I Am CEO Podcast with hey Laylee. At the time of conversation, Haley was the CEO and leadership development strategist at Talent Growing, where helping leaders develop through communication skills, emotional intelligence, and authentic networking. Here's the idea that I would sprint with Leadership is built through relationships, not just authority for builders that matter tremendously. Because as a business grows, you can't rely solely on your own drive. You need people around you. You need team members, collaboration mentors, partners, advisors, people who see things that you ultimately don't see. He Laylee's work around authentic networking stood out to me because sometimes as entrepreneurs, we treat networking as like a transaction. We ask, what can this person do for me Instead of asking, how could I build a real relationship that creates value over a large period of time? And that's why the idea that the network, the idea that your network is your net worth matters, but not in that shallow way that we often are thinking about. It's not about collecting names or just passing around business cards. It's about building. Building the kind of relationship where support, mentorship, accountability and opportunity can actually form. This connects with the human pillar because businesses that last are often built by leaders who understand people, not just products and numbers. Don't get me wrong, products and numbers are extremely important. But don't forget that human aspect. Don't forget about that human aspect of business. Hey, Laylee talked about having a small army of people to delegate to, including virtual support that ties into the same idea. Leadership requires enough humility to know you should not be doing everything yourself. Even though even if you know how to do everything or most things doesn't mean you should do everything. And it gives you enough clarity to bring in the right people in, right people in to do the right work. Here's the idea that I would spend some more time with. If you want people to follow the vision, build the relationships and communication that makes the vision believe. Here's something you can journal about or just ruminate over. Are you building a network that only knows what you do? Or one that actually knows how you think, lead, serve and show up? Because builders don't scale alone. They scale through trust. If leadership, communication or delegation has become a bottleneck in your organization, or maybe even in your life, this conversation with Halali is definitely one worth revisiting.
