IAM2818 – How Consistency Creates Lasting Results

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

A smiling man stands in front of a collage of faces with the text: "How Consistency Creates Lasting Results. Season 9 Episode #2818. I Am CEO.The Myth of Short-Term Intensity

Many people believe that significant results are the product of massive, singular bursts of effort. We often tell ourselves that if we just “lock in” for a short period, we can reach our most ambitious goals. However, true sustainability and quality rarely work that way. In this episode, inspired by a conversation with former athlete and personal trainer Maurice, we explore why consistency creates results far more reliably than the high-intensity pushes we often rely on.

Building a Foundation Through Routine

There is a powerful parallel between elite athletes and successful business builders. Star performers do not rely on occasional effort; they rely on established routines. While raw talent can provide an early lead, it eventually catches up to you if you haven't built a foundation that makes success repeatable.

By prioritizing showing up regularly over pushing harder, you ensure that your talent shows up when it matters most.

Engineering Repeatable Success

The core takeaway for any CEO is to shift focus from the daily sprint to the daily routine. This is the essence of the “Operations Pillar”—creating systems and processes that allow you to perform a task again and again. You don't need to be perfect; you simply need to be consistent. Ask yourself: “What small action could I do daily that will build momentum over time?”. That is where your real growth begins.

Many people believe that results come from bursts of effort. I'm going to lock in for this 30 seconds and I'm going to hit my goal. Short term intensity, quick wins, big pushes for a short period of time. But here's the thing. Sustainability rarely works that way. All good things take time, and it takes time to build things of quality and things that will last a long time.

Many people believe that results come from bursts of effort. I'm going to lock in for this 30 seconds and I'm going to hit my goal short term intensity quote. Quick wins big pushes for a short period of time. But here's the thing. Sustainability rarely works that way. All good things take time, and it takes time to build things of quality and things that will last a long time. In episode number 35, I spoke with Maurice, who is a former athlete turned personal trainer. We had a phenomenal conversation and what really stood out was how consistency creates results far more reliably than the intensity that we often think that it does. Think about it. I've always loved the comparison between being an athlete and running a business. Athletes, star athletes, people that really excel, don't rely on occasional effort. They rely on routine. Often there's really, really, really, really talented people. You see this in business and in life and especially in sports as well, too, that sometimes they don't try, they don't have to because they're so talented. But what we don't realize is that that usually catches up with you. If you don't have the routines, if you haven't built the foundation, you don't reach the heights that you could reach. You never reached the potential that you could have. Yeah, you're talented, but that talent doesn't show up consistently. For builders working in their business every single day, this lesson applies directly. You actually don't need to be perfect. And a lot of times when we try to be perfect, we're actually not. You need to be consistent. Small actions repeated daily create momentum. The real takeaway is that discipline isn't about pushing harder. It's about showing up regularly. How does it show up? The operations pillar, building routines that can make success repeatable. That's what you want to create. You don't necessarily want to see, how can I sprint every single day, 24 hours a day? You want to say, how can I spend 2 hours locked in maybe 30 minute intervals or 15 minutes within an hour? How can I create something that not only can I do right then and right there, but I can do it again and again and again and again? That's operations. That's the foundation of creating those systems and those processes. Here's something worth asking. What small action could I do daily that can create and build momentum over time? That is where your real growth begins. During this conversation with Maurice, we talked around many things. Discipline, routine, and how consistent habits create lasting results. You have to check out this episode. If you ever approached anything in terms of trying to sprint through it and get it done quickly and get it done fast, not realizing that the consistent, regular habits of honing in actually lead to that success. So you have to listen to this interview.
