IAM2810 – How Internal Clarity Shapes External Success
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Reflection of Internal Clarity
Many builders focus strictly on external results—KPIs, revenue, and growth—to determine their success. However, these lag measures often reflect something much deeper: your internal state. In this episode, we explore a conversation with Taylor Walker about self-mastery and how internal clarity actually shapes the external success we see in our businesses. When your thinking is clear, your actions and your business outcomes naturally follow.
Self-Awareness as a Decision-Making Tool
The “inner game” is the foundation for the “outer game” that every leader wants to conquer. For builders, real growth starts internally because self-awareness directly improves decision-making. By understanding exactly who you are, you can lean into your unique strengths and account for your weaknesses when making critical choices.
Ultimately, better decisions based on self-knowledge create the superior outcomes we are all striving for.
The Human Part of Business
In the rush to follow gurus and “proven” steps, we often forget the most important variable in the equation: ourselves. The core takeaway from this conversation is that you cannot separate “the us” from the organization. By understanding your patterns and habits, you increase your likelihood of success in every future opportunity. Ask yourself: “How well do I actually understand the ‘why' behind the things I do?”.

Many builders focus on external results and it makes sense. Think about it. We have KPIs and all those lag measures so we can understand if we're what we're doing is helping us get to where we want to be. Think about it. Revenue growth, outcomes. These are all things that we look at and we pay attention to to determine how successful we are with the things that we're doing. But stay with me on this. Those results often reflect something even deeper. In episode number 39 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with Taylor Iwalker and she's a yoga teacher and counselor focused on self mast. What really came up during this conversation was how internal clarity actually shapes external success.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. When I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO podcast.

Many builders focus on external results and it makes sense. Think about it. We have KPIs and all those lag measures so we can understand if we're what we're doing is helping us get to where we want to be. Think about it. Revenue, growth, outcomes. These are all things that we look at and we pay attention to to determine how successful we are with the things that we're doing. But stay with me on this. Those results often reflect something even deeper. In episode number 39 of the I Am CEO podcast. I spoke with Taylor Iwalker and she's a yoga teacher and counselor focused on self mastery. What really came up during this conversation was how internal clarity actually shapes external success. Just flow with me for a little bit. When you're thinking is clear, your actions follow. We often don't realize, like how important that inner game is to the outer game that we want to conquer, match, master and excel at. For builders, this actually means that growth starts internally. The real takeaway is that self awareness improves decision making. Just think about it. When you understand exactly who you are, it allows you to make better decisions, not just in general, but for exactly who you are. If you know you have the strength somewhere, you can lean more into that strength. When you're making that decision, if you know you have a weakness or maybe you don't have the person to compliment it, you're maybe not going to make the decision that you would before. And what happens, better decisions created equals better outcomes that are produced. Where does this come up? The human and people pillar? Why? Often we forget about the human part of business. And the human part of business includes being human. And part of that humanity is actually understanding that while we're making decisions and we want to understand what's the best decision, we're actually asking all the gurus, we're following the steps and doing all the things we have to understand ourselves and how impactful it is in the decisions that we make to understand and consider who we are and where our strengths lie. Here's a question worth asking. How well do you actually understand yourself? When I say to yourself, I'm thinking about our own patterns, our habits and our decision making. How well do we know exactly why we do the things that we do, how we do the things that we do? So in the next opportunity that we have, we cannot just make a decision, but we make a decision with the knowledge of self that allows us to increase our likelihood of success. Awareness drives that growth and opportunity, and that awareness of self is such a powerful thing. This episode explores mindset, awareness and alignment and such a powerful conversation that we had that I wanted to pull and extract this nugget because I think it's something that we often forget about the U.S. and the business, the U.S. and the organization, and how our strengths and weaknesses, how our awareness of who we are can actually align very much so with where we want to go.
