IAM2800 – Why LinkedIn Works Best When You Focus on Relationships

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

A man smiles in front of a collage of diverse faces with the text: "Why LinkedIn works best when you focus on relationships. Season 9 Episode #2800.

The Trap of Broadcast Marketing

Many builders treat LinkedIn as a simple broadcast platform—rent, rinse, and repeat content in hopes of visibility. While likes, views, and impressions feel rewarding, these “vanity metrics” rarely translate directly into business opportunities. In this episode, we explore why shifting your focus from “how many people saw this” to “who did this help me connect with” changes everything.

The Power of Connection Over Reach

The real power of LinkedIn comes from genuine connection. In a conversation with sales and marketing professional Jessica Koch, we discuss how intentional networking turns mere visibility into tangible opportunity. When you prioritize relationships over reach, you move beyond just being seen to being known and trusted.

Engineering Meaningful Conversations

The core takeaway for builders is to treat social media platforms as ingredients that support real conversations. This shift in perspective changes not only how you spend your time online but how you show up, post, and engage with your audience. Ask yourself: “Am I using this platform to broadcast, or to build real conversations with the people I ultimately want to serve?”.

Many builders treat LinkedIn like it's a broadcast platform. Post content, share updates, promote services, rinse and repeat. But here's the real power of the platform. It actually comes from connection. In episode number 26 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with Jessica Koch, a sales and marketing professional who helps people leverage LinkedIn effectively. What was really powerful during this conversation was the emphasis on relationships overreach. Many people get caught into what I like to call many people call visibility metrics or vanity metrics, likes, views or impressions. But here's the secret that I want to let you on. Let you in on. Those numbers don't always translate into opportunities as people like to joke and say. And I say sometimes when I speak. I never saw a like that, bought a product or service directly. At least what does relationships. For builders that are working on their business every single day, this means shifting how you use the platform. Like LinkedIn but many other platforms as well. Here's something that you can do. Instead of asking how many people saw this, ask yourself a little bit more of a different question. Who did this Help me connect with the real takeaway here is that social media platforms, or ingredients as I like to call them, like LinkedIn, work best when they support genuine connection. When conversations grow, opportunities follow. Think about it. It's going to change the way that you spending time on these social media platforms, but on a deeper level, it's probably going to change how you show up and post and engage on these platforms as well too. So this is a natural connection to the visibility marketing pillar. Not just being seen, but being known and being trusted. Here's something you should consider and sit with am I using LinkedIn or frankly any other social media platforms to broadcast or am I using it to build real conversations with the people I ultimately want to serve? This question and really leaning in on the question will often shift your results. Obviously with Jessica we talked around a lot of different things including LinkedIn strategy, relationship building, and how intentional networking turns visibility into opportunity as well. If you want to think differently on how to build your presence online, but also to generate meaningful connections, this conversation is definitely worth exploring. Make sure you pay to make sure you listen to this interview.
