IAM2766 – The Strategic Advantage of an Intentional Mindset
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.
The Architecture of Intentional Thinking
While many founders attribute success to external strategies or systems, the true foundation of a resilient organization is the mindset established at the start of each day. Successful leaders recognize that without an intentional starting point, the day—and its inevitable “fires”—will control the executive rather than the other way around. By prioritizing internal direction before external demands like email or meetings, a founder ensures they are leading with clarity rather than merely reacting to a mounting to-do list.
Mindset as a Leadership System
Establishing a morning mindset is not merely a personal ritual; it is a critical leadership system that dictates how a founder solves problems and serves customers. Anchoring the day in a specific word or scripture creates a grounded baseline for executive decision-making. This systematic approach to thinking allows a builder to remain creative, flexible, and resilient even when navigating the inherent uncertainties of business growth.
Engineering Success from Within
The definitive insight for sustainable leadership is the realization that success begins in the mind long before it manifests in the business. Founders are encouraged to identify a single word or phrase to embody each day, serving as a guiding compass for every subsequent action and decision. By implementing this founder-level system, a leader gains a quiet but powerful advantage, ensuring that strategic direction is set before the daily distractions of the marketplace emerge.

Most founders think success is about strategy, systems, or scale, but the real foundation is something far more personal. The mindset you start your day with.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I AM CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners, just like you on How to Build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of the episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Most founders think success is about strategy, systems, or scale, but the real foundation is something far more personal. The mindset you start your day with. On episode number 1 of the IMCO Podcast, I had my mom, Kathy, on the show. She's the founder of an embroidery company and shared a simple but powerful practice that has changed everything for her. She starts every day with the daily word. Think about it. Before email, before meetings, before planning, before grabbing your smartphone, she spends intentional time anchoring her thinking around a word or a scripture that sets the tone for the entire day. What this means is that she's not reacting to the to-do list. She's leading with clarity. For builders that are working in the business, this matters more than we actually realize. Without an intentionality to the day, a starting point, the day controls you instead of the other way around. And as I like to joke, entrepreneurs, CEOs, business owners, any type of leader, you're part-time firefighter. You're constantly putting out those fires. Which makes it all the more important to make sure you're anchoring yourself in that beginning of the day. Kathy, my mom, doesn't treat this as a personal ritual. She treats it as a leadership system. By grounding herself first, she stays creative, flexible, and resilient even while navigating uncertainty and growth. That mindset carries into how she serves her customers, how she solves problems, how she shows up as a founder. So here's something for you to apply today. Ask yourself this question: What is the single word or phrase that you want to embody that will shape how you lead, create, and make decisions? Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it guide your actions. This is not just a morning habit. That's a founder-level system that sets direction before distractions begin to show up. And they will. Show up.This insight comes from episode 1 of the I Am CEO podcast with my mom, Kathy Harkless, where we explored how intentional mindset creates a quiet but powerful leadership advantage. Success will start in your mind long before it shows up in your business.
