Lana McAra 1:15
I am, thank you so much.
Gresham Harkless 1:17
Awesome. Let's do it. So to kick everything off, I wanted to hear a little bit more about what I call your CEO story. And when did you get started with your business?
Lana McAra 1:25
You know, I never really wanted to be in business. It was something that just kind of evolved. I was a stay-at-home mom, I have seven children. I was very busy. I didn't have time for a job. But I always had a side gig going, you know, I was selling Avon, I was writing books, I wrote 20 books during those years, believe it or not. So I always had stuff going on. But I was never in the workforce and I never really wanted to be. But then in 2009, I ended up with a divorce. Now I'm a single woman, I had to find a way to support myself. And I kind of felt like I was just catapulted into it. You know, I had a lot of skills, because my books had up to that point sold about 600,000 copies. And that was because I'm a good marketer. I've been out there marketing my own books, right? Speaking and doing all that all that that goes with it. So I had skills, but I never really put them into marketable form until then.
But wow, was I ever motivated at that point, you know, I had to pay the rent. So that's what really got me started. So I started with, of course, I have my writing skills and a copywriting course under my belt, and so forth. But then I just started in my marketing, I just started freelancing. In marketing, I did try the workforce, I did get a job, I was in corporate, and I was a webinar marketing manager at a corporation in Pennsylvania. And, but I didn't like it. It just wasn't for me. I felt so intimidated when I first went in because I'd never worked a corporate job before. But when I got in there, I realized I knew twice as much as anybody in the room. And they were asking me questions and listening to the answers. And I'm like, wow, but at the same time, you know, the breathing down my neck, they were micromanaging. I felt like I was smothering. You know, I didn't last very long until I completed the project.
And I ended up doing something else at that point, I just couldn't stand the pressure and the constant overwatching you know, so from there, I ended up going into personal development, I started out with personal development for me because I realized that a lot of stuff, a lot of things that were carried over from my dysfunctional marriage, you know, and different things that were holding me back. And then I realized that, wow, this is really life-changing. I want to help people, I want to help people with this. And so I ended up opening a practice. And now I work with people to help them resolve those things quickly and easily. So that's really like a super nutshell of what happened. But you know, if you really put your toe in the water and really get out there, you'll find out you might be a little better than you think. We hold ourselves back. When we have this idea that maybe I'm not as good. Maybe I wouldn't do as well. Maybe that's over my head. You know, those are all just mindsets.
Gresham Harkless 4:24
Yeah, absolutely. Well, I definitely appreciate you for you know, obviously being able to work you know, and do that personal development yourself. We've been able to help out so many people because you're absolutely right. And I can't think of the phrases definitely leave in my mind right now. But so many of us have so many and I was going to ask you, would you call those skills or would you say their gifts because I think so many of us have gifts, and we don't really recognize how talented we are and how gifted we are and how skilled we are. And we sometimes will put them by the way starter will minimize them in reality we should be kind of shining our light on them.
Lana McAra 4:59
Absolutely. I'd just had a conversation this morning about this very thing. Isn't that funny?
Gresham Harkless 5:03
Yes, it is.
Lana McAra 5:04
So, yeah. Because what happens is our friends and family tell us, Oh, you're so good at that, or, or you should go into this field, or whatever. And in our mind, there's something that says, Oh, I'm not sure. Maybe I wouldn't make it. I don't know if I'm good, as you know, and we look at other people like, Oh, I'm not Tony Robbins. I could never do that. Well, you don't have to be Tony Robbins. You can be yourself. It'll be fine. You know, he started somewhere. Yeah, we hold ourselves back.
Gresham Harkless 5:31
Yeah. Absolutely. And I think that you know, I always say like, a lot of times if you run your own race, you can never lose and I think so many people you know, obviously Tony Robbins has helped so many people you just using him as an example. But I think so many people are looking for Lana, they're looking for Gresh are looking for our unique selves, because a lot of times we have our stories, we have our experiences, and they speak directly to that person.
Lana McAra 5:53
Yes, absolutely. That is really the key to that connection that we have through what our story is connecting to their story. And, wow, that's like an arc of electricity thing.
Gresham Harkless 6:06
Exactly, exactly. And amazing things started to happen. So I know you touched on it a little bit. I wanted to hear a little bit more about now it's my turn and exactly what you're doing to help support the clients.
Lana McAra 6:15
Oh, wow I work with women over 50. Particularly, I do have some male clients, I do have some younger clients. But most of my clients, I say, 80% are women over 50. And so it all started through this personal development opened a practice, I started working with clients. When I did my marketing study of who my clients are, I found out there are women over 50 with a lot of anxiety, some of them have depression, and physical things going on as a result of anxiety, because anxiety causes stomach issues and other things. So that was really my crowd. And I love that group.
I mean, when these 50-plus women get released from these anxieties and different things, I mean, they just blossom, all of a sudden, they're out there, you know they're starting new businesses, and they're excited and they look younger, they act younger, you know, it's just beautiful to see that happened. So when the network, the Awake TV network contacted me, because I had an interview on the network. And they contacted me and said, would you like your own show? And I went, really? And then the second question is, what do you want to do? And it didn't take long, I thought about it for about a day. And it just came to me, women over 50.
That's what I want to work with. That's my crowd. And so that's really how it started. So every week we interview an expert, kind of like we're doing here for about 20 minutes, then I go into some personal development a little bit for another 20 minutes, and then we end up with a process to get help, right then right in the show. We work through something and give people tools to help them. So that's really the nutshell of it. It has been such a wonderful gift to me to be on that program, the feedback, I'm getting is the interaction with these wonderful expert guests. It's just been such a blessing to me personally, and then it's going out, you know, just one.
Gresham Harkless 8:17
Yeah, I was absolutely actually gonna say that to you that, you know, it's been a gift to you. But I'm sure it's definitely been a gift to people who have been on the show and have listened to the show. And I think when you kind of approach things with that energy, it starts to create that kind of snowball effect where it creates a tremendous impact for so many people.
Lana McAra 8:33
Yes, indeed, absolutely. One of the things that's really interesting is that people over 50 Men and women are in a state of transition, they're looking at their life in a different way. You know, marriage, family, kids career, all that stuff is, is you know, like settled in. Raising kids is usually complete or almost complete, complete, people are looking at retirement. And then unfortunately, this age group is the highest divorce rate of all age groups, because of the changes that are happening, you know, couples get married in their 20s or 30s. They grow apart, they're busy, and they don't keep connecting. And next thing you know, you know, all of a sudden, you're you're like a deer in the headlights. Oh, my goodness, I'm single. What now? Yeah, yeah.
Gresham Harkless 9:18
Yeah, that's why it's so awesome that you, you know, have created everything that you have to help, you know, support and speak to those, those men and women that are going through that because I think and I don't know, definitely correct me if I'm wrong, where you feel like you're by yourself. A lot of times when you're going through that transition are those down moments and down periods. And to be able to have you know, whether it be you know, your interviews or the books that you've written to be able to speak to those people in those situations is definitely tremendous. I want to ask you now for what I call your secret sauce, and I don't know if you already touched on this but this could be for yourself or everything you're doing what what do you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique?
Lana McAra 9:55
Well, the thing that I absolutely love about what I do Is personal development, like formulas that I put together from many different sources, these are not all mine, but they are mine and you know, the concoction. Fingers oh, yeah, recipe. And that is that you can dissolve those stuck things, those traumas, those pain points, those awful memories you hate to think about, you can dissolve the emotional charge off of those quickly and easily. It's so gentle, you don't have to cry, you don't have to feel the pain of it again. And it's permanent. So you don't have to keep going back to it. Because the secret sauce is we hold these feelings in our body. And knowing how to dissolve it from the body is the key.
In a way, that's brain science. This isn't voodoo, or woo-woo, or any of that stuff. This is brain science, it's called holographic memory theory, you can look it up on Google. And I incorporated that into what I do. So when you go to talk therapy and these other things, they deal with the mind, they deal with it with a memory in the mind, but very few people deal with the stored memories in the body. And this is the key. And so when you can pluck it out, literally pluck it out on the body, throw it away, all of a sudden you feel this physical relief, your mind goes, Oh, I don't have to think about that anymore. And it just elevates everything in your life, and you just feel so much clearer.
And a lot of times the body then will start to manifest pain and other symptoms because of this stuck emotional body like the trauma. And that stuff can be resolved by just knowing how to do it. And it's so easy. I call it brain games, you can trick the brain with these games, they feel like child's play, but they're actually science. When you do this, it resolves and then you don't have to use willpower. There's no homework, which I love. Because, you know, we effort so much. We have our affirmations, we have our habit-forming patterns, and all these different systems that we use, are effective. But if you could do it easier, without having to go through all that would not be better. Absolutely. And so that's what I that's my secret sauce. Simple, easy, quick, permanent. When you leave a session, you feel different, but you don't have to try to feel different. You just feel different.
Gresham Harkless 12:41
Yeah, I wanted to switch gears a little bit. And I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an app or a book or habit that you have. But what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?
Lana McAra 12:53
Oh, it's something that has absolutely changed my life. And I keep learning about it all the time. And that is we always make things too hard. Simplicity is the key to success. Take it down from its least amount of steps to its most direct. Something that I just noticed with another It wasn't me but someone else that I just keyed in on. And that is they had a ranking like an emergency caution and all clear. And they use red they use stoplights. So emergencies, the red and caution is the yellow and all clears the green I thought wow, that is the simplest way I've ever seen.
So simplicity, in everything website, how you talk about your systems, your processes, and how you approach your processes. When you are in business mode, take it to the least level, the most simple level direct level. And then you're not only uncomplicated like your life gets streamlined immediately. But scaling then becomes easier. And everything is better when you're giving directions to assistants and those kinds of things that I've worked with those assistants and employees for a long time. Giving them simple directions, you know, makes it much easier. So simplicity is its key. It's really key.
Gresham Harkless 14:17
Yeah, absolutely. So I want to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be like a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. Or if you were to happen to be a time machine, what would you tell your younger business self?
Lana McAra 14:28
Do you have more control over how you feel? Then you might realize that how you feel in your body, how you feel in your mind, your emotions, how you feel in your relationships, you have more control over that than you might realize.
Gresham Harkless 14:44
Absolutely, and I love that. And now I want to ask you my absolutely favorite question, which is a definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're all gonna have different quote-unquote CEOs on this show. So Lana, what does being a CEO mean to you?
Lana McAra 14:56
It means freedom to me. I can order my days as I wish If I want to work late at night or work late at night, if I want to get up in the middle of the night or work in the middle of the night, I want to sleep until 10. asleep until 10. I have absolute control over my life, my daily life. And really, that to me was more important than the money.
Gresham Harkless 15:14
I appreciate that perspective and that definition, and I appreciate your time even more, what I wanted to do is pass you the mic so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional, you can let our readers and listeners know. And then of course, how best they can get a view, find out about the show and all the awesome off-books that you've authored and things that you're doing.
