Book: Good to Great

Poem

Good Enough Edgar A. Guest

My son, beware of “good enough,”
It isn't made of sterling stuff;
It's something any man can do,
It marks the many from the few,
It has not merit to the eye,
It's something any man can buy,
It's name is but a sham and bluff,
For it is never “good enough.”
With “good enough” the shirkers stop
In every factory and shop;
With “good enough” the failures rest
And lose to men who give their best;
With “good enough” the car breaks down
And men fall short of high renown.
My son, remember and be wise
In “good enough” disaster lies.
With “good enough” have ships been wrecked,
The forward march of armies checked,
Great buildings burned and fortunes lost;
Nor can the world compute the cost
In life and money it has paid
Because at “good enough” men stayed.
Who stops at “good enough” shall find
Success has left him far behind.
There is no “good enough” that's short
Of what you can do and ought.
The flaw which may escape the eye
And temporarily get by,
Shall weaken under the strain
And wreck the ship or car or train.
For this is true of men and stuff—
Only the best is “good enough.”

Gresham Harkless Teaser 00:00

When you start to realize what people do to be great, you marvel at that, but I think you also truly understand if you want to make that decision.

And that's the biggest thing is like, do you want to be great? Is that something that you do want to make that step towards and understanding that if you want to be great, this is what the great people do. They make sacrifices for that to happen.

Intro 00:23

Are you ready to hear business stories and learn effective ways to build relationships, generate sales, and level up your business from awesome CEOs, entrepreneurs, and founders without listening to a long, long, long interview?

If so, you've come to the right place. Gresh values your time and is ready to share with you the valuable info you're in search of. This is the I AM CEO Podcast.

Gresham Harkless 00:51

Hello, hello, hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO Podcast. This is a special episode of the I AM CEO Podcast where I'm going to be talking about something that is a powerful quote that we always hear, but we sometimes don't realize how impactful it is.

And that is the quote from Jim Collins in the book, Good to Great. Good is the enemy of great.

One of the biggest things that we can kind of fall victim to, and I use the word victim because it can sometimes feel like it's happening to us rather than happening for us, or we have an opportunity to kind of change that.

It's this idea of moving from good to great in that not realizing that we actually have a choice to be able to do that.

Now, I remember so long ago when I was in high school, I believe, I went to this basketball camp and I remember getting this poem.

[restrict paid=”true”]

And it really stuck with me because it was one of those things where we sometimes don't realize, like how good enough doesn't allow us to be our best selves.

And I truly believe that we all have some type of potential and reason for what we're doing, where we're doing it, how we're doing it.

And I think it's so imperative for each of one of us to kind of tap into that potential so that we could be our best selves.

So I remember getting this poem and I'm going to see if I can actually find it because it really stuck with me.

Because it said something of along the lines of like good enough it's not made of sterling stuff but the whole idea was that we really get caught into this place of trying to keep things as they are rather than really make things better.

So I'm going to actually just found the quote and I'm going to make sure to put it in the show notes as well too, or the actual poem, because it's a danger.

And sometimes the saying even is that success is such a lousy teacher because when you have some success, and even if it's good, good can be some type of success, it doesn't allow you to go to that next level to take that next step.

So I'm gonna read this. This is good enough. Edgar A. Guest is the person that wrote this and I read this like years ago and it's really stuck with me because it's always like, do you really wanna be great?

And are you gonna sacrifice to good to be great? And that is the potential to maybe be bad, to maybe fail, to maybe have things not go the way because it is a sacrifice in order to do that.

So here's how it goes. My son beware of good enough. It isn't made of sterling stuff. It's something any man can do.

It marks the many from the few. It has not merit to the eye. It's something any man can buy. Its name is but a sham and bluff, for it is never good enough.

With good enough, the shirkers stop in every factory and shop. With good enough the failures rest and lose to men who give their best.

With good enough the car breaks down, and men fall short of high renown. My son, remember and be wise, and good enough disaster lies.

With good enough have ships been wrecked, the forward march of armies checked, great buildings burned, fortunes lost, nor can the world compute the cost.

In life and in money it is paid, because at good enough men say, who stops at good enough shall find success has left him far behind there is no good enough that short of what you can do.

And ought the flaw which may escape the eye and temporarily get by shall weaken under the strain and wreck the ship or car or train.

For this is true of men and stuff, only the best is good enough. So it really stuck with me. I remember reading that, I think, when I went to one of the basketball camps, one of the years, and I was like, really, that makes so much sense.

Because so many times we can skate by by doing things good enough, but really that does not hit the ultimate potential that we could ultimately do.

So one of the big things is that good is considered like meeting expectations or doing things well enough without pushing any boundaries, without seeing things through, and seeing if things can go a little bit farther to be great.

And it feels very comfortable because it's so easy to stay where we're succeeding moderately, because there's no urgency to improve.

That moderate success is that lousy teacher. This is the thing that keeps us in that comfort zone of good because we don't really want to see things better.

I think you can probably look at numerous organizations and businesses that we've seen fall because they didn't test those boundaries.

They didn't go along the route of trying those things. If we look at huge companies like your Blockbusters versus your Netflix's, especially when a lot of these businesses have an opportunity to purchase, innovate, or even incorporate that same innovation.

Sometimes it's saying, okay, we're good where we are. So it's keeping you from taking those steps.

So it's so important that we keep aware of that and we make sure that we are taking the steps in order to do that.

So that's the first thing, the comfort zone of good. The second thing is that there is sacrifice that is required to be great.

One of the things that I really loved, I'm huge Kobe Bryant fan, just because I think that it's so rare that you actually hear the behind the scenes on what success looks like.

It's so rare that you actually get a glimpse into what makes people great. So I was always a really big, you play basketball in high school.

So I always looked at athletes and wanted to always know like what did it really take to be successful?

I felt like Kobe Bryant, at least in my view, was one of the first people that gave you a little bit more insight into the sacrifices that he makes and sacrifices and things that he did.

And I thought really getting a little bit more insight into that was something that gives you the opportunity to decide what you want to do.

And when you realize that, you start to realize that you can make that decision or you cannot make that decision. Kobe Bryant has this quote where he says, a lot of people say they want to be great, but they're not willing to make the sacrifice necessary to achieve greatness.

He also says, there's a choice that we have to make as people, as individuals. If you want to be great at something, there's a choice You have to make.

We can all be masters at our craft, but you have to make a choice. What I mean by that is there are inherent sacrifices that come along with that.

He has a documentary, I think it's called Muse, and I remember it's like one of the first, and if not only, movies that I downloaded in that documentary.

This is prior to him passing away and dying. But it really was so insightful, not necessarily because at that time that I got it, I was actually, trying to be the best basketball player that I could be.

But because it was such, I believe sports is such a parallel to life. So when you start to realize like what people do to be great, you marvel at that.

But I think you also truly understand if you want to make that decision. And that's the biggest thing is like, do you want to be great?

Is that something that you do want to make that step towards and understanding that if you want to be great, this is what the great people do.

They make sacrifices for that to happen. So that's one of the big things. So just understand that greatness is focusing on what truly matters, whether that's business, relationships, or personal growth.

Understand that that could be literally your family. You could be saying, hey, I want to be the greatest dad that I can be.

And that's completely okay in business. And I think the really big thing that I'm trying to hammer home is that there's a choice in terms of doing that.

But in order for you to be great at one thing, you're probably going to be sacrificing someplace else, at least in the very beginning, because it does require that saying no.

And make sure that you understand that people like Steve Jobs, who had this commitment to innovation, while he was definitely like a polarizing person.

Like I think you can understand like his power of focus, his way that he wanted to say, this is not good enough and push and accelerate, and wanting to accelerate that growth was something that's really, really big.

And the third point is that overcoming, you have to overcome the fear of failure. Overcoming the fear of failure is one of the big things because like I mentioned, like when you're in good, In order for you to get to great, you have to let go of good to be great.

And sometimes when you do try to reach great, you don't actually reach great, you actually go backwards, you do worse.

So I always have this kind of, I guess, It's not a mantra, it's a story that I heard from a business coach where I bring it up sometimes during the podcast where I say a lot of times in order to swing to the next rung, it's just like a kid on the jungle gym.

To go to that next rung, you have to let go of the previous row. So it's always cool. Like, okay, so I want to go to the next rung, so I'm stuck on this rung.

So most people say, hey, I want to go to the next rung, but they literally are not letting go.

But say you get the courage to say, okay, I'm going to let go, I'm going to swing to this next rung.

So when you swing to the next rung, what you have to understand is that you are putting lots of weight and you want to of course use your momentum, but you're putting lots of weight on one hand, one arm so that you can swing to the next rung.

But what can happen is that if you're so stuck on the failure, the potential of failure, you may not ever want to let go of that previous rung to get to the next rung.

Now, even if you do let go of that previous rung and try to swing to the next rung, it doesn't necessarily mean that you're gonna make it.

And anybody who has been on the jungle gym understands how exhilarating, exciting, scary that could be to try to go to the next rung, especially when you're getting further along and you wanna go to the end.

You wanna get to your goal, your aspiration, whatever that might be. Know that you have to let go.

But I think one of the things that we as entrepreneurs, CEOs, and business owners need to also do is understand we need to have a healthy relationship with failure because failure is not final.

Just as you might fall off the jungle gym, know that you can go back and try it again. You can try it again with more data, information, more awareness around how you can do better.

You can do that again and again and again. What we have to try to realize is that we can minimize the risks that we're taking when we do fail, because we will fail.

If you are trying to do anything that's innovation, if you're trying to be great, you're going to fail.

We just have to learn from that. We have to learn quickly. We have to wipe our, dust ourselves off, wipe off our, tears, whatever that might be, and go to the next thing.

And that's where it's so important that you make sure that you do that. And there's so many people that risk that.

And to be very honest, I think if we really look at that, in order to be great, you have to make that risk.

But frankly, there have been people that have taken that risk and it hasn't gone the way that they wanted to go.

But that's what makes it so captivating and beautiful when those people can and have reached greatness.

But understand that you really don't fail until you throw in the towel and quit. So keep that in mind when you're thinking about being great, what exactly that looks like.

So really what you want to do is create actionable steps for that breakthrough to ultimately happen.

You set a high standard and you aim for greatness in a specific area of your life or potentially in your business, in your organization.

You want to start to adopt that mindset of growth. You heard the saying getting 1% better, but you really want to have this mentality that you want to constantly improve rather than settling for where you are. Know that you're challenging yourself.

One of the reasons that my handle on social media is progreshion is P-R-O-G-R-E-S-H-I-O-N with Gresh in the middle is largely because I wanted to remind myself of that mentality of like getting 1% better and what that looks like.

And that does not mean that I do not fail. It does not mean that I do not take chances. It just means that I want to understand that the real recipe, I believe the real recipe for success, the real journey of success is not a destination.

It's kind of like a mentality. And when you have that mentality of constantly getting better, you know that there's always another step that you can take.

And while that becomes exhausting in the sense of you're constantly never where you think you're gonna be, I think it also provides a lot of peace because when you say, hey, I want to break through, you know that you're always trying to break through the next thing and the thing after that and the thing after that.

You ultimately have to start to build yourself mentally, emotionally, sometimes even physically, you know, wraps into that so that you can take that next step.

And I think that's one of the more exciting things. But it's also making sure that you create that environment so that you can ultimately succeed.

When you have that environment, that could be coaches, it could be podcasts, books, courses, whatever that you're taking in, mentors, groups that you're a part of, but creating that environment of success and getting that feedback is really powerful.

I think too, like even hearing how people broke through also brings those things home. So that's one huge thing that you wanna do.

So with that being said, I just want to challenge you to really get clear on those things that you feel are the things you want to be great at that you're only good.

And what can you do to make that happen? What steps literally today can you do? And I want to charge you and give you homework to say like, hey, let's not wait till tomorrow.

Let's do it right now. Let's create that plan and let's take an action right now that will make that happen.

Good enough is not where greatness is possible. When you have that good enough, it doesn't allow you to be as great as you can be.

And as many people have said, the world needs your greatness and needs the things that you can only do.

So I just wanna charge you with that opportunity. Let's go be great. And I look forward to seeing you at the finish line, the victory lap, whatever we might call it.

But let's go do those things and be great. So this is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.

You know, You heard the saying getting 1% better, but you really want to have this mentality that you want to constantly improve rather than settling for where you are. Know that you're challenging yourself. 1 of the reasons that my handle on social media is progression is P-R-O-G-R-E-S-H-I-O-N with Gresh in the middle is largely because I wanted to remind

13:39 - 14:09

Gresham Harkless: myself of that mentality of like getting 1% better and what that looks like. And while that becomes exhausting in the sense of you're constantly never

14:09 - 14:38

Gresham Harkless: where you think you're gonna be, I think it also provides a lot of peace because when you say, hey, I want to break through, you know that you're always trying to break through the next thing and the thing after that and the thing after that. You ultimately have to start to build yourself mentally, emotionally, sometimes even physically, you know, wraps into that so that you can take that next step. And I think that's 1 of the more exciting things. But it's also making sure that you create that environment so that you can ultimately succeed. When you

14:38 - 15:12

Gresham Harkless: have that environment, that could be coaches, it could be podcasts, books, courses, whatever that you're taking in, mentors, groups that you're a part of, but creating that environment of success and getting that feedback is really powerful. I think too, like even hearing how people broke through also brings those things home. So that's 1 huge thing that you wanna do. So with that being said, I just want to challenge you to really get clear on those things that you feel are the things you want to be great at that you're only good. And what can you do

15:12 - 15:43

Gresham Harkless: to make that happen? What steps literally today can you do? And I want to charge you and give you homework to say like, hey, let's not wait till tomorrow. Let's do it right now. Let's create that plan and let's take an action right now that will make that happen. Good enough is not where greatness is possible. When you have that good enough, it doesn't allow you to be as great as you can be. And as many people have said, the world needs your greatness and needs the things that you can only do. So I just wanna

15:43 - 15:57

Gresham Harkless: charge you with that opportunity. Let's go be great. And I look forward to seeing you at the finish line, the victory lap, whatever we might call it. But let's go do those things and be great. So this is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the
