IAM2442 – Rejuvenate Your Mind: Take a Rest Day

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man on a podcast cover with text: "Episode: 2442, Rejuvenate Your Mind: Take a Rest Day." Logos for Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and YouTube Music are displayed.

Gresham Harkless discusses his current journey toward franchise brokering, emphasizing the importance of flexibility and rest in professional and personal life.

He frames his current day as a “rest day” after running six miles the previous day, recognizing the value of listening to your body and adjusting plans when needed.

Gresham discusses planning for the future—both for his marketing business and his franchise brokerage—and acknowledges the personal and professional struggles he’s faced.

Gresham compares his year to a difficult sports season, drawing a parallel to his favorite football team, the Cowboys, who have also struggled with injuries and underperformance.

Despite setbacks, he suggests that sometimes, like in sports, you need to “throw the playbook away” and regroup.

Additionally, Gresham points out that sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that's okay. Moving forward, he’s contemplating taking the next two weeks to rest and reset, especially considering the natural slowdown in leads between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

If so, you've come to the right place. Gresh values your time and is ready to share with you the valuable info you're in search of. This is the I AM CEO Podcast.

Gresham Harkless 00:26

Hello, hello, hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO Podcast. And this is a special episode of our I AM CEO Podcast.

And this is actually going to be a snippet of a snippet, so to speak. I'm just doing an intro because I've been starting to document my journey into starting what is now called Blue Star Franchise.

We're also going to do a kind of sub site within CB Nation called Franchise CEO. So you'll see some links in the show notes related to that.

But just wanted to give you a little bit more insight, give you a little bit more color in some of the aspects of why I'm actually doing this.

Because one of the things I was doing as I was going through training to start up this new business was realizing and hearing from the founder of FBA, the Franchise Brokers Association, that it'd be really cool to document your journey going through and building this out.

I think it's something that would be super helpful, obviously for people that are looking for and thinking about starting franchises.

But frankly, if you're starting anything, any type of business, I think it's really cool to kind of just even see the journey and how it's been going from there.

So I'm going to share a few of those snippets from the, from the first couple of videos that have been created.

But definitely, of course, subscribe to our YouTube, check out a lot more where I figure out exactly where we're going to post this.

So I'll have that information that's available to you. But regardless, if you're a builder, continue to keep building, continue to do your thing.

The world definitely needs exactly what you're trying to build and needs you to be your unique self.

So make sure to run your own race, because nobody can run your race like you. This is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.

Hello, hello, hello. Who knows what day this is of the journey to franchise brokering. And the reason I just wanted to kind of do this, like I'll call this my rest day.

[restrict paid=”true”]

Like I wasn't going to take a rest day, but I ran six miles yesterday, didn't get the best sleep last night.

And I was up. So then I ended up getting in a groove where I got to sleep. I got to sleep when the alarms went off, of course.

So you always like those nights, but it always always having some flexibility in your schedule so that you can adjust if needed.

And that's what I ended up doing. I took some time, slept a little bit longer. And one of the things that had really been kind of weighing on me.

I think, this week is I've started to we're getting close to the end of the year. We're getting close to the time where you start to figure out what are you going to do for next year?

And I've been doing a lot of that, a lot of planning for the marketing business, even, you know, for the brokerage as well, too.

And even for things like the CEO hack site and things like that and figuring out like where and how this will be built and what this is going to look like.

And I think that's where a lot of the reflection is on like how the year was. And honestly, this was probably a challenging year for me.

I won't say the most challenging year in my life or anything like that, but there was a lot that happened personally and professionally.

When you're juggling all those things, sometimes it does make sense to take a breath. I know like in sports and in football and basketball, a lot of times, when you get what they call boat rush.

Where you completely like lose a game and it's a terrible game, you don't do anything right.

Everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Sometimes you just take the playbook and you just throw it away.

And as I'm closing out this 12th week of my 12 week year, I always usually reflect on like, hey, is this actually working?

Is this doing what I needed to do? And honestly, I just don't think it's a fair measure this year.

I'm a huge Cowboys fan and the Cowboys are not really doing well right now. They're, they won yesterday, but they have not had the year that they've had the year.

And sometimes, and I'm not saying this is the case, cause I was hoping that we would get Bill Belichick, which is just a sidebar as a coach, at least to give him an opportunity to see what he could do.

This has been a challenging year for them just with injuries and things like that, things not going the way that you expect it to go.

But you put up a fight as best as you can. And I kind of feel like maybe this was that year for me as well, too, where it's just.

A lot of things didn't go the way I wanted them to go. And some things, you know, of course happened, but I think overall it was definitely a challenging year.

So when you are evaluating, does the 12 week year really work? I think that I love the cadence of this because we're in our 12th week.

And then we're going to go into the 13th week, which can be whatever you want it to be, whether it's a rest week or whatever that might be.

That's kind of like where I'm at. With that being said, I'm really kind of pumped and focused on maybe just resting.

I thought about maybe even just resting for these next two weeks just to get my flow in.

I was in a Facebook group and someone was asking about leads this time of year and apparently between Thanksgiving and New Year, the leaves do slow down a little bit.

And those things are just what we're kind of focusing on and see what happens from there.

But I think it's important to kind of just, rest, not necessarily throw in the towel, but just understand that sometimes those years happen.

Sometimes it's those seasons, as I talked about in the last video. And you just adjust, rest up.

You don't want to carry over sometimes what happens in the previous game to this game.

You don't wanna carry over what happened last year into this upcoming year, or this year into the next upcoming year.

So you just figure out how best to kind of evaluate rest up and get ready and don't let the emotional mental part take a hold of you.

So sometimes you're going to have those bad weeks, bad months, bad days. Try not to have those carry over, but take the lessons that you can from each other.
