Yes, absolutely. For those that didn't catch this, it's sun, s u n fitness. I got my words all tangled up. But I am super appreciative of you taking some time out to be on the show. Before we jump into that interview to hear about all the awesome things that Tim is doing, I want to read a little bit more about him so you can hear about some of that. Tim is the founder and owner of Sun Fitness. That's s u n fitness. Sun Fitness is a concierge-based in-home personal training company that provides training online coaching and nutrition coaching services. They also train clients. District Barbell, a private studio in Merrifield, Virginia. Working in tandem with medical professionals, Sun Fitness strives to better the quality of life and support the communities of the DMV. Let's do it then. So, kind of kick everything off. I wanted to rewind the clock a little bit and hear a little bit more about how you got started, what I call your CEO story.

Sure. Absolutely. So, actually, I was working at a local gym in the area as a trainer. While I was there, I had. I had garnered a nice following of clients, and that was definitely, you know, a. I was in a good position, but a lot of my clients were entrepreneurs. A lot of them were executives, and they were pushing me and asking me what the next steps were. As I continued to talk to them, a lot of them encouraged me to start my own business and become independent. As I went down that road and started thinking about it, one of them actually offered me an opportunity. He asked if I wanted to actually start training some of his employees at his company. So I said, okay, let's just give this a try. I invested in about 1000 pounds of equipment.
I brought that in on a weekly basis to his conference room and hosted a boot camp class, and that's where it all started. I started doing that concierge-based personal training, going to home and office and whatnot. I started seeing a lot of clients in their homes. As I went down the road, I did have a background in physical therapy. So I started seeing that, hey, you know, there's a big need also with that chronic disease population. So I started really seeing a lot of the geriatric population in their homes. As I went down that road, you know, it was just like, it's just been a really fun journey. You know, the first year was always difficult. You know, just, just starting off trying to, trying to get a feel of entrepreneurship, understanding where to go and being independent. But no, here we are, week three.
We. I had to basically restart two startups because the first startup was in 2018, and then the pandemic happened in 2020, so I had to restart every restart from there. But I had gotten to a good place, and then the pandemic happened and then I had to do a full restart again. But I think I did it even better. I'm at a point now where I had a waitlist working with me and then I hired two trainers on. So now they are able to see I'm able to service the demand that we have that we gained. So it's been good. We're in a good place right now.

Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. So I wanted to hear a little bit more about your way and how you're working with your clients. You take us through a little bit more on what that looks like and how that process goes.

Absolutely. Absolutely. So it's funny because I feel like I always talk about how it's important to find your niche within any business, you know, but I feel like my niche is very broad, but I have like, very specific niches within that broad spectrum of the world of fitness, you know? On one end, I might have someone who's actually popular in the Parkinson's community. I am associated with the Parkinson's Foundation of the National Capital Area. I also do classes for the Shepherd Center, which is another nonprofit senior citizen organization. So I did really well with that community. As an example, one of my clients had a drop foot and was referred to me by my chiropractor.
He asked me for help because he had just helped her out of a wheelchair, but she had dropped her foot and couldn't pick it up. Then from there, I was able to help her with some exercises. Before you knew it, actually, in a month, the drop foot went away. Then from there, she was able to begin walking on a regular basis. Then the other day, I heard that she was shopping at Home Depot for a few hours, you know, just walking around. Now she's, she's in her late eighties, and she just, you know, she did, it's fun. It's kind of rewarding to see that progression. Also, you know, those in the Parkinson's community, a lot of them cannot move very well or they're falling all the time, and they don't exactly know how to approach their bodies since they've lost so much of their ability to move. So I try to help them regain and relearn some movement patterns.
So even something as simple as being able to, like, move in your bed, I know a lot of them have been able to see progress in that they're not as reliant on, let's say, their loved one or their caregivers that help them in and out and do, like, basic activities like just moving across their bed or getting into bed. But then they go into the other end of the spectrum, like, so, for example, for my, some of my high-performance athletes are actually army officers. So, in that space, the army has developed a new combat fitness test called the Army Combat Fitness Test. ACFT. The test is quite challenging and frightening for many individuals who want to advance in the army. Often, if you don't perform well on your physical fitness tests, you risk getting stuck and not being able to progress.
You know, you have to pass to progress. So, there is a lot of controversy about the new test because many people think it's not very gender-neutral. A lot of females are finding that a lot of the movements are specifically difficult for them, and so a lot of my clients who hire me to help them specifically with that test are female army officers. So from there, they want. So we have specific goals we aim for. I've been proud to assist all of them in reaching a high level of preparation to pass the exam successfully and perform well. I don't think the exam is fully rolled out yet. You know, they're really much still in the preliminary stages, but they're testing it on certain groups within the army. But, no, they've come in prepared, and they look good for all their peers.
So it's definitely a good sign, you know, that there's always, when you're very specific and methodical with your approach to fitness, you can get to really big goals. So, yeah, those are just a couple of examples. I definitely work a lot. Well, very well with busy professionals, too. Like, no, any busy executive, high-level professional, anyone who doesn't have a lot of time for themselves, sometimes, like, the only time they have for themselves, it's actually our sessions. So they find that with that, even during this time period, I've done a lot of virtual sessions with some clients.
I still see a lot of clients either in their office or they come to me in my studio. I go to their home and work them out in their, in their, their home gym. From there, we're able to still maintain a high level of, of that, um, of that performance and add that aspect of fitness in their life. In turn, note that trickles into everything else. They perform better at work, they sleep better, they feel better, and because of that, that all in turn is, it's just like this big ecosystem of, you know, of health and fitness and how that goes into the rest of their lives and how that all that trickles into everything.

Yes, I absolutely love that. So would you consider that to be what I like to call your secret sauce? This could be for yourself individually or the business or a combination of both, but it's essentially the thing you feel like kind of sets you apart and makes you unique. Do you think it's that ability to, one, I guess have the ability that you kind of talked about to change and adapt, but two, it kind of sounds like also adapting to the clients that you're serving as well, too. Do you think that's part of your secret sauce?

Oh, yeah, absolutely. That's the thing, you know, and I think that's shown with just how busy we have been, you know like the system that we've created is very individualized, very systematic, very specific for them. Of course, you know, with the way we approach training, I mean, at the end of the day, the more specific you are, the better the results are going to become. Otherwise, if you're just kind of shooting in the dark, you're not really going to be getting those results. But at the same time, like in the fitness industry, there are a lot of cookie cutters that kind of come into play. So, like, a lot of people will maybe create a generic workout program and then it will sell to the masses. And, maybe that program might be perfect for someone, but at the same time may not be fit for many others in, that space as well, those who are purchasing that program.
So we, like, we make everything tailored, custom program customized for them. I think just adding that little touch of me using, and having tools like the app if I'm coming to see you. At the same time, it's an experience we want to provide an uplifting experience, experience, something that's extremely positive. I'm very thankful to say we have a very positive team. No, everyone is when we come. We'll provide a bright point in your day. Even though, you know, obviously, like I always say, fun is a very relative term in the realm of fitness. You know, some people, for some, you know, like me, it's so, it's super fun.
I look forward to it every single day. But for some others, you know, it's not, you know, and that's, that's fine. You know, at the end of the day, like, you know, we all have likes and dislikes, and sometimes they're putting out that, that effort, exerting that effort at the end of a long day or at the very beginning of an early morning might be very difficult for some. The things that once you get in that rhythm and find a way to make it sustainable, that's the most important thing. So that's why it's important we find a customized, specific way for each individual we work with.

Absolutely appreciate that. I wanted to switch gears a little bit, and I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an app, a book, or a habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?
09:58 – Tim Sun
Oh, good question. Actually, what makes me more efficient is my business coach. So I tend to be very much a creature of habit. I mean, I think that also goes into just that feeling of complacency sometimes, you know, sometimes especially when you get to a point where maybe you hit a goal and you're like, oh, my goal. This goes like what I was just talking about with health and fitness just now, that previous example, you hit it. Either you get complacent, and I think complacency is you'll hear from many other people is that, like, it's the worst enemy for progression, you know? So my business coach is Tina Hyland with capital coaching.
So she actually is one of the, is pivotal in me in making sure that I am progressing forward. We're always constantly setting new goals. We're constantly trying to find ways to work around why things are not working. Typically the reason why things are not working is in action. You know, it's because I I'm not being, if I'm not being proactive, nothing will move forward. Sometimes, you know, like I told you, being complacent, it's very easy to fall into a habit. So, I rely on having a coach to assist me. I mean, so many others rely on me to be their coach. So for me to bet if I have a goal of bettering Sun Fitness, of making us a better business for our clients, for our trainers, and for me, then it's important that we find ways to progress this and make it a better vehicle for anyone to use.

Yeah, I absolutely love that. And, you know, we had Tina on our show in episode 735, so definitely check that out as well, too. But I think one of the things that we always kind of forget about is that in order to be the people that are successful and reach a certain level of success, they're being coached, they're being challenged, they're being trained. Even as they're giving so much to other people, they're doing the same for other people. They're also doing it themselves. So I love that you kind of, again, that environment or that mentality, for lack of a better term, of how you're able to continue to kind of go to another level. You're leaning on other people and learning from them so that you're able to kind of reach that ultimate level. So absolutely appreciate that hacking. I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO. Nuggethe. So this could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something you would tell a client, or if you hop into a time machine, you might tell your younger business self.

Sure. Absolutely. I think that. So when I think about that little nugget that I like to give my clients as an example, it's just that, you know, like, when you are looking at something that is insurmountable, you know, something that just is incredibly hard for you to get past, and there you. Everyone in life ignites, hits a wall, or hits something at some point, it's important that you find ways to channel some of your own energy to get past it. For me, one of those things was, you know, I think at some point, I thought I hit, like, let's say, rock bottom as an example. I felt like I hit a point where I had all this negative energy, and I felt like I couldn't do anything about it. Well, you know what? It's important that we channel some of that negative energy into something positive, you know? So from there, like, you know, fitness is an ideal example of that.
No, you can come in and have all this negative energy, rage, sadness, whatever it might be, but if you're able to transfer that into something that's positive, well, there you go. The body benefits from that. In turn, maybe you're releasing some stress into something, into yourself, into your body in a very positive manner. From there, you know, I find that that helps all aspects of life. You know, if I am going, if I am relieving that stress, then, hey, that stress is then left on the gym floor, and I'm able to approach everything else with a clearer mind. I think that's another thing. It goes to anything. It's not just fitness. There are so many ways to go about releasing stress and negative energy.
Even actually, in the past few months, I picked back a piano. The piano has been a hobby of mine for a long time ago, and I started playing again. I find that to be a very big stress reliever. It's important that you find different ways to have outlets and then even the same thing, too, outlets of positivity. As you kind of go through that, you can find ways to work around something that's insurmountable and something that is something that holds you in that place where you feel like you're stuck. As you continue to find kind of work on those methods, I think you can work around any issue.

Absolutely. No, I appreciate that, Tim. Now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. We're open to having different quote-unquote CEO's on the show. So, Tim, what does being a CEO mean to you?

Well, I think that being a CEO is all about being, oh, you're the captain of the ship. You know, if you're the. If you're looking at a business being a ship, I mean, you're that. You're the one. You're the one who's guiding it along the way. You're the North Star. You're the map. You're telling everyone where to go. As you continue to, let's say, like, you know, talk about garnering a crew, you know, as people are coming onto your ship, whether it be clients, whether it be your staff, you know, like, whether it's, you know, like information, you know, everything is coming on, and you're having to steer towards wherever you think it's important to go, you know, whether that is the next goal, the next destination. You know, I think that's what it means to be a CEO.

So she actually is one of the, is pivotal in me in making sure that I am progressing forward. We're always constantly setting new goals. We're constantly trying to find ways to work around why things are not working. Typically the reason why things are not working is in action. You know, it's because I I'm not being, if I'm not being proactive, nothing will move forward. Sometimes, you know, like I told you, being complacent, it's very easy to fall into a habit. So, I rely on having a coach to assist me. I mean, so many others rely on me to be their coach. So for me to bet if I have a goal of bettering Sun Fitness, of making us a better business for our clients, for our trainers, and for me, then it's important that we find ways to progress this and make it a better vehicle for anyone to use.

Yeah, I absolutely love that. And, you know, we had Tina on our show in episode 735, so definitely check that out as well, too. But I think one of the things that we always kind of forget about is that in order to be the people that are successful and reach a certain level of success, they're being coached, they're being challenged, they're being trained. Even as they're giving so much to other people, they're doing the same for other people. They're also doing it themselves. So I love that you kind of, again, that environment or that mentality, for lack of a better term, of how you're able to continue to kind of go to another level. You're leaning on other people and learning from them so that you're able to kind of reach that ultimate level. So absolutely appreciate that hacking. I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO. Nuggethe. So this could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something you would tell a client, or if you hop into a time machine, you might tell your younger business self.

Sure. Absolutely. I think that. So when I think about that little nugget that I like to give my clients as an example, it's just that, you know, like, when you are looking at something that is insurmountable, you know, something that just is incredibly hard for you to get past, and there you. Everyone in life ignites, hits a wall, or hits something at some point, it's important that you find ways to channel some of your own energy to get past it. For me, one of those things was, you know, I think at some point, I thought I hit, like, let's say, rock bottom as an example. I felt like I hit a point where I had all this negative energy, and I felt like I couldn't do anything about it. Well, you know what? It's important that we channel some of that negative energy into something positive, you know? So from there, like, you know, fitness is an ideal example of that.
No, you can come in and have all this negative energy, rage, sadness, whatever it might be, but if you're able to transfer that into something that's positive, well, there you go. The body benefits from that. In turn, maybe you're releasing some stress into something, into yourself, into your body in a very positive manner. From there, you know, I find that that helps all aspects of life. You know, if I am going, if I am relieving that stress, then, hey, that stress is then left on the gym floor, and I'm able to approach everything else with a clearer mind. I think that's another thing. It goes to anything. It's not just fitness. There are so many ways to go about releasing stress and negative energy.
Even actually, in the past few months, I picked back a piano. The piano has been a hobby of mine for a long time ago, and I started playing again. I find that to be a very big stress reliever. It's important that you find different ways to have outlets and then even the same thing, too, outlets of positivity. As you kind of go through that, you can find ways to work around something that's insurmountable and something that is something that holds you in that place where you feel like you're stuck. As you continue to find kind of work on those methods, I think you can work around any issue.

Absolutely. No, I appreciate that, Tim. Now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. We're open to having different quote-unquote CEO's on the show. So, Tim, what does being a CEO mean to you?

Well, I think that being a CEO is all about being, oh, you're the captain of the ship. You know, if you're the. If you're looking at a business being a ship, I mean, you're that. You're the one. You're the one who's guiding it along the way. You're the North Star. You're the map. You're telling everyone where to go. As you continue to, let's say, like, you know, talk about garnering a crew, you know, as people are coming onto your ship, whether it be clients, whether it be your staff, you know, like, whether it's, you know, like information, you know, everything is coming on, and you're having to steer towards wherever you think it's important to go, you know, whether that is the next goal, the next destination. You know, I think that's what it means to be a CEO.
