So let's do it, let's make it happen. So I wanted to kick everything off with I guess how I began. Can you take me through what led you to get started with your business?

Joey Price 2:26

Yeah, so I never dreamed that one day I would be an entrepreneur. And maybe it's in my blood. Because when I think about it, my mom had a side hustle. My grandfather was an entrepreneur on both sides of my family. So it was going to come down the line eventually. And the entrepreneur bug hit me. I started my HR, outsourcing HR consulting company because if I can be honest, I felt a responsibility to create HR that was effective. That was strategic and was engaging for small businesses, because I had just seen it done, in a poor way, you know, in a purely administrative way.

And I was looking at, you know, why are all of these startups out west? You know, starting at 10 employees and skyrocketing to 200? Or why are these businesses, in business for so long? The reality is, that it's good HR, it's making the right decisions about people. And so I felt a responsibility, a call, if you will, to serve as a provider to small businesses and startups across the US who wanted that type of support, but weren't in the position to get it in the status quo way of hiring somebody on the team.

Gresham Harkless 3:52

Yeah, it makes so much sense. And I often say a lot of times that I think sometimes we forget when we're talking about businesses and organizations that we're talking about people, and as you are able to do you know very, very well as be able to help people in organizations be able to hire the right people to build the right teams. And I think if we lose sight of that we sometimes lose sight of the very essence of what makes a business so successful.

Joey Price 4:16

Yeah, no, you're right. When you think about why businesses win, and why they lose, it's, it's surrounding two things, it's money and people, either, they were able to generate enough cash flow and skyrocket that product idea or service. Or they were able to attract the right team, players who were able to contribute the right strategy, or the right hustle, or the right work ethic, or build the right culture and community around their business. And so really smart CEOs as you listener, listener to this show, you're a smart, smart CEO. It's all about the people that you have on your team, and the environment that you're able to cultivate Because, without the right people on your team, you won't be able to go as far and as fast as you could if you had just assembled the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

Gresham Harkless 5:11

Yeah, absolutely find yourself putting out like I guess, fires for all the wrong reasons. And I think that I love how you crew you talk about that foundational piece because it starts with the decisions that you make it sounds like about people. And then once you have those right people in the right rooms and our right butts in the right seats, as they like to say, then you start to really reach another level.

Joey Price 5:29

Yeah, I mean, think about the great tech talent that moves from organization to organization, Outlast, you know, what companies have identified is, hey, if you grew up in a company, a, who are super successful, we want a piece of what they've got going on. And we want to bring you on board. And so you see a lot of multiplication of, you know, quality workplace DNA that happens because the right people are jumping to the right organization. And so I help companies find that right culture mix and find those people. So it's definitely key.

Gresham Harkless 6:08

Yeah, absolutely. And I know it's not anything that is, I guess you don't just wake up out of bed and have the ability to do that. So I want to know a lot more about how you work with clients. Can you take us through exactly like what that is and how that looks like?

Joey Price 6:23

Yeah, the the TLDR version is Jumpstart HR provides hourly project and monthly subscription HR services to small businesses and startups across the US. Now we want to unpack that a little bit. The narrative is, if you think of a large organization, they've got a fully functioning HR department, everything from recruiting the employees to helping the employees move on to their next journey. Well, if you scale that down for your organization, that's exactly what we do. So we can help you with the job descriptions, we can help you with recruiting, and compensation reviews to make sure people are paid correctly, all the way to onboarding to employee management.

So being the group that fields questions about leave, about Sally's taking too much work-from-home time, and she's always spending it with her kid. And we don't have kids, but she's taking advantage of the situation. And we need to see some fairness in the company. Those are some of the things we tackle as well, all the way up to you know, Coronavirus, and how companies can respond to that, whether you have the ability to work from home, or not work from home. So, you know, we're really this organization that becomes the HR department for your startup and allows us to bear that responsibility so that you can continue to grow the business and build the winning culture without the burden of some of those things that we love to tackle.

Gresham Harkless 8:02

Yeah, that makes so much sense. And I think, you know, as you kind of spoke to, you know, at the end is that so many times, people, entrepreneurs, and CEOs will start businesses because they might be really passionate about something, or might be an expert, and XYZ. And they may not necessarily have that expertise, and that HR while we're at one realm, so to be able to focus on what they really love doing and what really helps move the needle for a while making sure that you partner with experts like yourself and your team and what you guys are able to do so that it creates that win-win situation.

Joey Price 8:32

Yeah, one of the foundational books that any entrepreneur needs to read is The E Myth by Michael Gerber. And in that, he tells the story of an entrepreneur who I think starts a bakery or something like that. And the fundamental, I guess it's a spoiler, but you should read it anyway, you're gonna wear a lot of hats in the business. And so I feel like entrepreneurship 101 is how to master all the hats, or how to be dangerous enough to move the business along while wearing all the different hats that you have to wear.

Entrepreneurship to one would be how to put people in the right place to wear the hats for you. And so we're just one of the hat wears, you know, we're specifically good at one thing. That's HR for small businesses and startups. And so as you look to build the team around you and around your business, think about how you can strategically get the right people wearing those hats so that you can focus on the few hats that only you can do.

Gresham Harkless 9:38

Yeah, that makes so much sense. And I definitely appreciate you obviously doing that for businesses. So I wanted to ask you for what I call your secret sauce and it could be for you personally or your business. But what do you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique?

Joey Price 9:51

Believe it or not one of my first jobs in high school. I worked for CVS and it was there that I really learned the value of customer service. And the value of not just telling people that, you know, the diapers are on aisle eight, or air fresheners on Aisle Five, but actually walking people to the destination and being available to answer questions. And so I think the secret sauce, part of it is, you know, just customer service making sure that you are that we deliver the answer to the employee, or to our, the management team that hires us or even to the prospect, and even from reading our blogs and podcasts and things to the community at large, walking people to the right answers so that they can make decisions that are practical and strategic.

And then the other side of it is really just loving, loving HR being an HR nerd, and bringing people around me who love talking shop. So I don't hire people unless they're specifically passionate about small businesses and startups. And then they have a track record of doing so because if you find people who aren't passionate about what it is you've asked them to do, they either are going to have their foot in the door and their foot out the door, or their foot on one rung of the ladder and aiming for that next rung of the ladder, when you may just need them to focus on this one particular thing. So I'm really jazzed up about those two things customer service, and being radically excited about our niche.

Gresham Harkless 11:38

Absolutely not. I love that. And I appreciate that. So I wanted to switch gears a little bit. And I know you kind of gave us what I call a CEO hack with the E Myth. Is there anything you would name with might which might be like an apple book or a habit that helps make you more effective and efficient?

Joey Price 11:54

Yes, so I love Evernote. I've been a master Evernote user. Since even before running my business, there's I think there's like an article in 2010, where I mentioned Evernote as one of the top tools that I use as an entrepreneur.

Gresham Harkless 12:14

Awesome. So I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be around HR or something you kind of spoke to earlier or it might just be something if you happen to a time machine, you would tell your younger business self.

Joey Price 12:28

Earlier this week, I guess it was last week. Yeah. Last week, a friend of mine invited me to a boxing gym. And he had a free trial for me to take a class. And I was like, man, it would feel good to punch in an inanimate object for a while. So I'll say yes, I have gloves, I have raps, I have all those things. I just don't do it that often. And so we went, we hung out, we worked out. And what really struck me at that moment was that there was a finite amount of time for me to get this workout. You know, there was there were clocks, there were bills, there were cow downs, there were rounds, we only had to think eight or nine rounds. And so each round, I was progressively thinking to myself that this moment was going to come to an end.

And whether I gave it my best or not, it's going to come to an end. So let me make the most of this moment. And punch as hard as I can stick it out for as long as I can. And just give it my best because the moment will come to an end. Whether that is the opportunity to pitch to a prospect to serve a customer or even to grow yourself and grow your team. You know, we live from finite moment to finite moment. And so it's really not about the quantity of hours, but it's the quality of your hours that will make you successful. So think about that punching bag, think about that countdown and the bell, and give it your your all when you have an opportunity to shine.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. So now I want to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different quote-unquote CEOs on the show. So Joey, what does being a CEO mean to you?

Joey Price 14:16

Being a CEO, to me means being a chief everything officer.
