The Trap of the Urgency Filter
A pervasive roadblock for high-performing builders is letting endless task lists and immediate demands mask their long-term organizational destination. Founders rarely lose direction because they stop working; rather, they lose it because they become so consumed by crossing items off a daily schedule that they entirely forget who the enterprise was originally built to serve. In this episode, pulling high-leverage insights from U.S. Naval Academy graduate and certified business coach Mandy on episode 82 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why returning to your core values is the ultimate remedy when your vision gets stuck.
The Strategy Pillar: Values as a Decision Matrix
True execution within the Strategy Pillar proves that the primary challenge for a scaling business is rarely a shortage of choices. Entrepreneurship naturally unlocks an overwhelming sea of opportunities—whether that means launching new offers, entering parallel markets, or aggressively expanding your workforce. The real friction lies in knowing which exact path aligns with your core entity.
When you deploy your foundational values as a strict operational filter, you successfully narrow the field and resist the temptation to let the loudest problem or the newest trend dictate your corporate roadmap. Your values must transcend passive banners hanging on a boardroom wall; they are designed to function as the definitive matrix that guides your organization when the answers are not obvious.
Clearing the Path to a Meaningful Future
The core takeaway for any CEO is to step into the executive responsibility of painting a clear, meaningful vision of the future while systematically removing bottlenecks for your workforce. Leading an aligned team requires giving your people the exact guidance, specialized tools, training, and strategic breathing room they need to execute at a high altitude.
When a complex crossroad leaves your leadership team confused, the smartest maneuver is to filter the dilemma through what your business stands for, rather than reacting out of fear, urgency, or superficial opportunity. Ask yourself this defining question: “Which major strategic decision becomes instantly simpler when you evaluate it strictly through your core values instead of temporary market pressures?”. Anchoring your choices in your foundational truths is the ultimate lever required to eliminate distraction and scale your venture with absolute clarity.

Builders don't usually lose direction because they stop working. Sometimes they lose direction because they become so focused on crossing things off the list that they forgot what the work was supposed to actually do and who it was supposed to serve. That's what really stood out to me in episode number 82 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Mandy Mandy is a Certified Business Coach Project Management professional who works with small business owners, particularly IT and professional service businesses.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Builders don't usually lose direction because they stop working. Sometimes they lose direction because they become so focused on crossing things off the list that they forgot what the work was supposed to actually do and who it was supposed to serve. That's what really stood out to me in episode number 82 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Mandy. Mandy is a Certified Business Coach Project Management professional who works with small business owners, particularly IT and professional service businesses. Now, before coaching, she actually graduated from the United States Naval Academy, led teams of more than 100 people, manage operations aboard naval ships, and spent over 13 years as an intelligence officer as well. In her nugget that she focused on during the podcast and spoke about was to go back to your core values whenever you feel stuck. And that's the idea that I really want to spend a little bit more time with. As builders, we have no shortage of options. Honestly, a lot of times when you open the door of entrepreneurship and you see opportunity, you see it literally everywhere. You can launch another offer, you can serve another market, you can add another platform, you can take on another client, you can hire someone, you can cut something or change direction completely. The challenge is usually not always generating choices. It's knowing which choice fits. And here's where core values become that decision filter. What do they do?
They remind you of why you started, how you want to operate, what you refuse to compromise on, and which type of growth is actually aligned with the company you're trying to build. This aligns perfectly with the strategy pillar. Strategy becomes clearer when the values narrow the field. Now, without that filter, builders can become trapped in urgency. The loudest problem becomes the highest priority. Newest opportunity becomes strategy. The longest task list becomes the definition of progress. And Mandy talked around and about being a CEO as a person responsible for painting a meaningful vision of a better future than clearing the past so that the team can get there. That means giving people guidance, tools, training, and enough space to actually execute. But the reality is, is that in order to be clear about the path, you have to be clear about the destination. Here's something that you really want to kind of pay attention to and carry with you beyond this conversation in this podcast is when a decision feels confusing, return to what the business says it stands for. And here's something worth thinking about a little bit more. Which decision becomes easier when you evaluate it through your actual core values instead of fear, urgency or opportunity? Because ultimately, value should not only live on the wall or things that you have as bumper stickers or banners. And within a boardroom, they should be so much more than that. They should actually show up when the answer isn't obvious. If your priorities have been crowded or even confusing, this conversation with Mandy is definitely one worth listening to.
