IAM2792 – Why Clarity and Purpose About Your Impact Changes How You Lead

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

A smiling man stands in front of a collage of people with the text: "Why clarity and purpose about your impact changes how you lead. Season 9 Episode #2792.

The Fallacy of Achievement Without Alignment

Many builders spend their careers focused strictly on external milestones: revenue, growth, and product launches. While this creates visible success, it can lead to a quiet internal disconnect where the “bigger picture” begins to feel blurry. In this episode, executive coach Catherine Wood explains why achievement alone isn't enough to sustain a leader—true leadership requires moving past the “what” to discover why the work actually matters.

Purpose as a Strategic Compass

A common misconception is that purpose is a luxury for those who have already “made it.” In reality, purpose functions as a compass that prevents growth from feeling scattered. When a leader gains clarity on their impact, their decisions become sharper and their priorities become clear.

Just as a microscope can concentrate sunlight to burn through wood, aligning your focus with your purpose creates a level of intensity and influence that general effort can never match.

Engineering Meaningful Success

The core takeaway from this conversation is the shift from transactional leadership to human-centered impact. It requires sitting with a deeper question: “If my work creates success, what kind of impact do I want that success to have on others?”. By moving to this deeper level, builders can ensure they aren't just creating another “widget,” but are building a legacy that extends far beyond their business results.

Many builders start their journey focused on achievement, and it makes sense. Revenue, milestones, growth, wash and repeat. But over time, the questions began to shift. Not just what am I building, but why does it even matter?

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on How to Build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of the episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Many builders start their journey focused on achievement, and it makes sense. Revenue, milestones, growth, wash and repeat. But over time, the questions began to shift. Not just what am I building, but why does it even matter? In episode number 22 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Katherine Wood, an executive and leadership coach who helps her clients create meaningful life impact in their world. What was really powerful during this conversation was how leadership changes when people reconnect with their person, their purpose. Many professionals achieve external success but feel disconnected internally. They're doing well, but they're not always doing what feels aligned. At least most of us. For builders that are working on their business on an everyday basis, this can show up pretty quietly. Think about it. You're moving forward, you're solving problems, but the bigger picture starts to become feeler. Catherine's work highlights an important shift that might be happening. Impact begins with clarity. When leaders understand what truly, truly matters to them, their decisions become sharper, their priorities become clearer, their leadership becomes more authentic. Here's a real takeaway: purpose isn't a luxury in leadership, it's a compass. And without it, growth can feel scattered. With it, energy becomes more focused. When leaders operate from clarity, they inspire others to do the same. One of the things that I remember was thinking about a ship that's out at sea and the sun's beaming down on the wood on the ship, and it never ever is able to burn through that ship. But if you take a microscope and you're able to concentrate that focus to fill it for purpose, just like you can within your organization, you can burn a hole through that ship in the wood. Why? Concentrated focus that's aligned with that purpose. It's something that we always have to remember as leaders. Now, this connects naturally to the human people pillar, how leaders understand themselves, their motivations, and the impact they want to have in the work that they create. Don't forget about that human part of business and the human part of life. Here's something worth sitting with. If my work creates success, what kind of impact do I want that success to have on others? It's much deeper. Than having the conversation of what new widget did I create? What's my product? What's my service? It's going to a higher and I think deeper level to ask the question of what does that look like? What does that impact look like? How does it manifest itself? Very powerful question. That question often opens a deeper level of leadership. Obviously, we had a phenomenal conversation around personal development, leadership clarity, and how aligning success with purpose creates relevance that extends far beyond business results. If you are building anything meaningful and want to ensure it is truly something that matters, this conversation, this podcast offers perspective that's worth spending some time with. So enjoy this.
