IAM2789 – Why Health and Balance Support Long-Term Success
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.
The High Cost of Hustle Culture
Builders often push themselves relentlessly toward growth goals, deadlines, and responsibilities, frequently adopting a “hustle culture” mentality. While this drive is powerful, it often comes at the expense of the founder’s most valuable asset: their own energy. In this episode, we discuss why relentless pushing is unsustainable and why true, long-term success requires a foundation of balance.
Wellness as a Performance Multiplier
There is an inseparable link between personal health and professional success. When energy drops, clarity and decision-making suffer. By treating wellness as part of your business strategy rather than a distraction from it, you leverage nutrition for resilience and energy for focus.
Understanding that you “cannot pour from an empty cup” is critical for any leader who wants to perform at their best consistently.
The Power of Compounding Habits
Preventing burnout doesn't require a total lifestyle overhaul; instead, it starts with “tiny bets” and small habits. By carving out just five to thirty minutes for health-focused activities, you create changes that compound over time. The core takeaway is simple: you don't have to sacrifice your health for your goals—aligning the two is what creates sustainable success.

Hustle culture is something that we've all heard and sometimes is something that we adopt on a regular basis. Builders will often push themselves relentlessly towards their goals and their aspirations, deadlines, responsibilities, growth goals. They all are all consuming for these builders. But here's the reality, and I know this very well. Sustainability. Sustainable success, I should say, requires balance. In episode number 27 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with Kim and Kaylee, a mother and daughter team helping women build healthier bodies and balanced lives. If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the IM CEO podcast.

Hustle culture is something that we've all heard and sometimes is something that we adopt on a regular basis. Builders will often push themselves relentlessly towards their goals and their aspirations. Deadlines, responsibilities, growth, goals. They all are all consuming for these builders. But here's the reality, and I know this very well.Sustainability.Sustainable success, I should say, requires balance. In episode number 27 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I spoke with Kim and Kaylee, a mother and daughter team helping women build healthier bodies and balanced lives. But what really came up during this conversation was how wellness ultimately affects performance. Think about it. Energy influences focus. Nutrition influences resilience. Balance influences sustainability. All these things are very much so intertwined for builders working on their business on an everyday basis. Understanding, and I would even say leveraging this connection is absolutely critical. As I like to say, you can't pour from an empty cup. If you want to help others, you have to make sure your oxygen mask is on. You can't separate personal health from professional success. They go hand in hand. When your energy drops, your clarity drops. When your stress builds, decision making suffers. Here's the real takeaway and thing that I want you to really understand. Caring for yourself isn't a distraction from success. Going to the gym, going for that walk, painting in the middle of the day, whatever it is that is your thing, it's not a distraction from success. It's very much so intertwined with success and it's necessary for success. It's all, all part of the strategy. When you invest in your health, you invest in your ability to lead. Where does this show up? It shows up in the human people pillar supporting the well being that fuels performance. Here's something you should consider and think about a little bit more. What small habit could I improve today that would increase my energy tomorrow? That's the big thing you really want to consider and understand. Often with the CEO hacks and things that come up during these podcast interviews, we think that we have to revamp our entire day and completely change everything that we're doing. But burnout is a real conversation. And that burnout doesn't happen because usually one thing happens. Usually it's a buildup of thing after thing after thing over time. So think about it. How can I carve out five minutes? How can I carve out 10 minutes to 30 minutes? Whatever it is that you can create space to do, how can that increase your energy for tomorrow? Think about those tiny habits on those tiny bits. They start to compound over time. Small changes compound. Obviously in this episode we went a lot deeper. We talked about wellness, mindset, balance and how sustainable health supports long term success. If you want to perform at your best consistently, this conversation is perfect for you. It's not either or, it's both and better. How can I improve myself and improve my business so at the end of the day I can crush my goals? It's not that you sacrifice your health for your goals. You want to have both of them together so that you can have sustainable success. And that's one of the huge things we talked around during this conversation.
