IAM2784 – How to Grow Multiple Ventures Without Losing Momentum

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Fallacy of Capability

A common challenge for builders isn't a lack of ambition, but a surplus of opportunity. Because you have the skills to pursue multiple ventures, saying “no” can feel like wasting potential. However, capability without clarity leads to fragmentation—being busy everywhere but fully present nowhere. In this episode, serial entrepreneur Lisa Song Sutton discusses how unchecked expansion can actually dilute your impact rather than grow it.

Focus Is Not About Shrinking Ambition

The most important shift for a multi-passionate builder is realizing that focus isn't about doing less; it’s about choosing better. When you align your ventures with a clear “why,” your energy multiplies instead of drains. With the right strategy and boundaries, multiple interests don't have to compete—they can actually complement each other. Structure doesn't limit a builder; it creates the freedom to execute at a higher level.

The Power of Strategic Sequencing

The “CEO nugget” from this conversation is that choosing where to invest your time and capital is about sequencing, not quitting. By choosing deliberately instead of reacting to every new opportunity, you can grow across multiple lanes without the chaos. Ask yourself: “Which opportunities am I saying yes to that might be pulling energy away from what matters most right now?” Answering that question is the first step toward disciplined growth.

Most builders don't struggle with ideas, coming up with ideas, creating ideas. They struggle with too many good ones. Opportunities, side projects, new ventures pulling at their attention. Trust me, I know better than most. The challenge is never about ambition. It's more about direction.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Most builders don't struggle with ideas, coming up with ideas, creating ideas. They struggle with too many good ones. Opportunities, side projects, new ventures pulling at their attention. Trust me, I know better than most. The challenge is never about ambition. It's more about direction. In episode number 17 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Lisa Song Sutton, an ambitious real estate investor and serial entrepreneur who juggles multiple interests and ventures. What really stood out in speaking with Lisa wasn't just about her journey. Of course, it's phenomenal and all the things she's been able to do and what she's involved in. But It was how intentional she was about her why. Too often as builders, we take on more because we're capable of taking on more. But capability without clarity creates fragmentation. You're busy everywhere but fully present nowhere. And for builders working in the business every single day, this tension is very, very real. You see opportunities that others don't. You have the skills to pursue them, and saying no can feel like you're wasting potential. But unchecked expansion can dilute impact. Visa's story really highlights an important shift that I want you to pay attention to. Focus is not about shrinking ambition, it's about aligning it. When each venture supports a broader vision, energy multiplies instead of drains. What really stands out here is how structure creates freedom. With the right priorities, and the right execution and strategy, multiple ventures don't compete, they actually complement. But without those clear boundaries, even great opportunities become distractions. This connects naturally and organically to how builders think about strategy and direction, deciding where to invest time, capital, and attention. This aligns perfectly with the strategy pillar, choosing deliberately instead of reacting to every single opportunity that's out there. Here's something you should ask yourself. Which opportunities am I saying yes to that might be pulling away energy from what matters most right now? That question is not about quitting. It's more about sequencing. Now, of course, in this conversation, we talked about real estate, entrepreneurship, and how disciplined focus allows ambitious builders to grow across multiple lanes without losing that momentum. If you're anything like me and you're managing several interests, And what to do with clarity instead of chaos. This is a conversation worth spending time with and really drilling down deep on.
