A common misconception among builders is that wellness is a luxury to be addressed only after the business stabilizes, the team is built, and revenue grows. However, the reality for many is that this “later” never actually arrives. Wellness is not a “nice-to-have” benefit, a perk, or a box to be checked; it is foundational business infrastructure. Much like a vehicle requires fuel and consistent maintenance to operate, human beings within a business require internal support to function at an executive level.
The Compound Cost of Depletion
When wellness is ignored, the negative ROI manifests across the entire organization: energy drops, decision-making slows, and communication eventually breaks down. For builders on the daily grind, this often shows up as a “heavy” feeling where progress is made, but it requires significantly more effort than it should. Because there is no buffer in the early stages of a business, a depleted founder's strain is felt by the organization almost immediately.
Engineering a Culture of Presence
Prioritizing wellness is a strategic decision that directly shapes leadership and company culture. When leaders model and prioritize health, people show up more present, communicate with greater clarity, and stay engaged for longer periods. Creating space for mental clarity and emotional balance prevents the business from feeling the brunt of leader burnout. And sadly, for many builders, that later never actually comes. Episode number 6 of the IMCO Podcast, I had a great conversation with Sammy, and she shared a little bit of why making wellness a priority isn't a nice-to-have, it's a foundational business decision. What really came up during this conversation was the shift in how wellness is actually framed. It's not a benefit, it's not something you do to check off the box, it's not a perk, it's actually infrastructure. Think about it, I, I so often say we forget about the human part of business. Just as your vehicles, you need the maintenance, you need the support, you need the gas and tank. We need that as human beings that are within these businesses, because when wellness is ignored, the cost shows up literally everywhere. Energy drops, decision-making slows down, communication actually breaks down as well too. For builders that are working in the business every day, this often shows up quietly at first. You're still getting things done, you're still crushing it, but everything feels heavier. You're making progress, but it takes more effort than it actually should. And over time, that strain compounds. This episode really highlights a very important truth that we can all kind of listen to. You cannot separate performance from people. You can't separate people from wellness. Space is one of those huge things that I have heard constantly on the show, how powerful it is to create space. When leaders don't create space for mental clarity, emotional health, or balance, the business eventually does feel the brunt of that. What's powerful here is that SAMHSA connects wellness directly to leadership and to culture, which is something that we sometimes don't prioritize or see as something that's powerful. When wellness is prioritized, people show up present, more and more present. They communicate clearly. They stay engaged for a longer period of time. And for builders, this applies just as much, if not more. When you're early stage, there is no buffer. You're grinding it out to some degree. And if you're depleted, the business will feel that almost immediately. That's exactly why wellness is not something that is indulgent. It's actually something that is very strategic. Now, here's a question for you worth slowing down for and truly asking yourself: What part of my business am I struggling because I'm operating from depletion instead of intention? That question just might reveal why things are actually harder than they ultimately need to be.
