IAM2769 – How Solving Your Personal Problems Can Become Your Next Business Opportunity

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man in front of a collage of diverse faces, with text discussing how solving personal problems can lead to business opportunities; “Season 9, Episode #2769” is noted.

The Fallacy of the Abstract Idea

A prevalent misconception among business builders is that a successful venture must originate from a novel, abstract idea. In reality, the most enduring entrepreneurial foundations are often built upon a persistent personal problem that refuses to go away. At its core, entrepreneurship is an exercise in high-level problem solving. By focusing on a clear pain point, a specific audience, and a definitive solution—rather than attempting to appeal to everyone—a leader can transform a personal struggle, such as navigating a specific health journey, into a scalable platform for others.

The Strategic Advantage of Lived Experience

The deeper a builder understands a specific problem, the more effectively they can serve their market. While technical knowledge is valuable, the true driver of high-impact businesses is empathy derived from lived experience. By “scratching your own itch,” you eliminate the guesswork involved in identifying customer needs because you have already navigated the obstacles yourself. This creates a natural environment of trust and allows for the creation of practical resources that truly resonate with those still struggling with the same challenges.

Engineering Your Next Market Opportunity

The definitive “CEO nugget” for identifying future growth lies in a simple audit of one's own life: identifying a challenge already solved that others are still struggling to overcome. True entrepreneurship is found in the transition from solving a personal frustration to scaling that ultimate solution for the benefit of others. By reflecting on the recurring problems that demand your attention, you may find yourself closer to your next significant business opportunity than you realize.

Most builders think business starts with an idea. In reality, many start with a personal problem that honestly won't go away. At the heart of entrepreneurship, it's all around problem solving. And in episode number 3 of the IMCO podcast, I had a health coach, Connie Curtis, that shared how navigating her own gluten-free journey actually became the foundation for empowering others with real practical resources.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint.. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content: visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO podcast.

Most builders think business starts with an idea. In reality, many start with a personal problem that honestly won't go away. At the heart of entrepreneurship is all around problem solving. And in episode number 3 of the IMCO podcast, I had a health coach, Connie Curtis, that shared how navigating her own gluten-free journey actually became the foundation for empowering others with real practical resources. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, she focused on clarity, your pain, Your audience, clear solution. And this is the lesson that most builders often miss. The deeper you understand a specific problem, the easier it becomes to serve people well. And what made her approach powerful wasn't just the knowledge. Don't get me wrong, the knowledge definitely helped. It was empathy. She wasn't guessing what people needed. She had lived it. It's this idea of scratching your own itch. Scratch your own itch, you're able to solve it. Often you're able to solve other people's as well too. So here's a question to reflect on today: what's a challenge I've already solved in my own life that others are still struggling with? That answer might drive you closer to your next business opportunity than you think. If this resonates with you, check out the full episode. We go deeper into how she built trust, created resources that truly help, and stay aligned with her overall mission while growing her impact. It's definitely worth diving into, but even more impactful is you asking the question and understanding what thing is bothering me over and over again. What is a problem that needs to be solved? What have I solved? And maybe how can I do that for other people? That's true entrepreneurship. That's what is your ultimate solution.
