IAM2730 – You Don’t Need to Be on Every Single Platform to Build Authority

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man in front of a collage of people with text: "You don't need to be on every single platform to build authority. Season 9 Episode #2730.

The Trap of Inconsistency

Many entrepreneurs fall into the trap of spreading themselves too thin, trying to post on LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok while simultaneously running a podcast and a newsletter. This “be everywhere” approach usually results in exhaustion and a lack of results, leaving you wondering why your marketing isn't working. Instead of trying to use every ingredient in the grocery store, you must identify only the essential ones that move you toward your specific goal.

The Power of One Stage

True authority is built through repetition and deep presence, not by being a jack-of-all-trades across every social platform. You must choose one “ingredient”—one platform where your ideal clients actually spend their time—and commit to dominating it completely. By showing up consistently and bringing value to your specific audience in one place, you build a foundation of trust that “making noise” across multiple channels can never achieve.

Focus as a Foundation

If you are trying to be everywhere at once, you aren't showing up strong anywhere; you are simply creating noise. Even the most successful media companies understand that they need a primary channel to lead their growth. This episode explores why you need to find your unique stage, commit to it, and execute on it repeatedly. Once you have truly mastered and dominated that one area, only then should you consider expanding your reach to other platforms.

Newsflash. You don't need to be on every single platform to build authority. You just need to own and really execute on one. I see entrepreneurs, and honestly, that's been myself as well too. Spreading themselves thin, trying to post on LinkedIn, Instagram X, YouTube, TikTok. Create a podcast newsletter. They're going on trips. They're speaking, they're doing all the things at the exactly the same time. And what does this amount to? Being exhausted, inconsistent, wondering why nothing's working. So here's the shift that you should make.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

They're going on trips, they're speaking, they're doing all the things at the exactly the same time. And what does this amount to? Being exhausted, inconsistent, wondering why nothing's working. So here's the shift that you should make. I often say, like we all are in the media business, you are a media company. Look at the way that you Build out your marketing strategy. Just like you're going to the grocery store to figure out what ingredients you need for your dish, you don't need all the things that are in the grocery store. You just need the ones that are essential to where you're trying to go. So pick one platform or ingredient where people actually are, and go deep. When I say people, I mean your people, the people that you're trying to serve. Your avatar, your ideal client. Show up consistently, bring value repeatedly, and engage genuinely. That's ultimately how you're going to build authority, through the repetition and presence, not through being everywhere at once. Once you dominate, and I do mean dominate, that channel, that ingredient, then you can think about expanding and getting better and increasing your reach. But if you're trying to be everywhere, you're not showing up strong anywhere. You're just making noise. Choose a stage, choose that ingredient, own it completely, and let that be the foundation for your marketing and business success. You are a media company, but even media companies have a flagship show. Find yours, commit and execute it on it, over and over and over again.
