IAM2709 – Prioritizing Retention: Building a Sustainable Business Foundation
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Risk of the Leaky Bucket
Gresham Harkless opens this special episode with a sobering truth: chasing new customers while current ones slip through the cracks is what kills businesses faster than anything else. He argues that focusing solely on acquisition without a solid foundation for retention is like pouring water into a leaky bucket. Instead of working harder to fill a flawed system, leaders must realize that getting more customers before solving existing problems simply “speeds up the bleeding”.
The Foundation of Sustainable Scaling
To build something truly meaningful and sustainable, Harkless challenges founders to shift their obsession from lead generation to lifetime value. He emphasizes the need to “fix your foundation first” by tightening the customer experience and building systems that encourage people to stay longer. By creating reasons for clients to return repeatedly, a business moves away from the constant grind of pitching and toward a model of genuine, long-term growth.
Curated Wisdom for the CEO Journey
This special segment draws from Harkless’s decade of experience and over 1,600 interviews to provide practical “CEO nuggets” for immediate application. He reinforces the idea that success is a non-linear journey—likening it to a “plate of spaghetti”—and encourages leaders to run their own race rather than following a pre-set blueprint. Guided by the equation “Visibility plus Resources times Connections equals Success,” this episode serves as a roadmap for strengthening the core principles that every successful business is built on.

Here's what kills businesses faster than anything else. Chasing new customers when your current customers are slipping right through the cracks. Now, if you can't retain the customers that you already have and service them and solve their problems, getting more just speeds up the bleeding. It's like pouring water into a leaky bucket. You're working harder, not smarter. If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build after recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Here's the truth that might sting a little bit. Your business may not actually need more customers right now. And I know, I know that might sound crazy when you're out there grinding, pitching, going to networking events, running ads, doing all these things to generate more customers and clients. But just hear me out. Most founders become obsessed with acquisition, and to some degree it makes sense. More leads, more traffic, equals more sales. But get this. Before you spend another dollar on ads, or you send out another estimate or proposal, or spend another hour on outreach. Fix your foundation first. Tighten up your customer experience. Build systems that make people want to stay longer. Create reasons for them to come back again and again and again and again and again. When you laser focus on lifetime value over new acquisition, you don't just grow, you build something sustainable. So stop chasing and start keeping. That's how you truly scale.
