IAM2637 – Step into Success: What’s Your Day 286?

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

In this episode, Gresham reflects on the past year of planning, the emotional hurdle of acknowledging the time that has passed, and the excitement of welcoming a potential candidate—identified through LinkedIn—who may become his first deal.

He emphasizes transparency with prospects, encouraging them to voice disinterest openly to avoid ghosting and to keep the pipeline moving efficiently.

The episode highlights several practical insights: the need to target the right audience (shifting from business owners to non‑owners), the importance of addressing objections early, and leveraging data analytics backgrounds when matching candidates to franchise opportunities.

Harkless notes that while progress can feel uncertain—“moving forward or backwards”—the key is constant motion.

Gresham Harkless 00:28
Hello, hello, hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO Podcast, and this is a special episode of our I AM CEO Podcast. And this is actually going to be a snippet of a snippet, so to speak. I'm just doing an intro because I've been starting to document my journey into starting what is now called Blue Star Franchise.

We're also going to do a kind of sub-site within CB Nation called franchise CEO.

So you'll see some links in the show notes related to that. But I just want to give you a little bit more insight, give you a little bit more color in some of the aspects of why I'm actually doing this, because one of the things I was doing as I was going through training to start up this new business was realizing and hearing from the founder of FBA, the Franchise Brokers Association, that it'd be really cool to document your journey.

Going through and building this out. I think it's something that would be super helpful, obviously, for people that are looking for and thinking about starting franchises.

But frankly, if you're starting anything, any type of business, I think it's really cool to kind of just even see the journey and how it's been going from there. So I'm going to share a few of those snippets from the first couple of videos that have been created.

But definitely, of course, subscribe to our YouTube. Check out a lot more where I figure out exactly where we're going to post this. So I have that information that's available to you.

But regardless, if you're a builder, continue to keep building, continue to do your thing.
The world definitely needs exactly what you're trying to build. It needs you to be your unique self.

So make sure to run your own race because nobody can run your race like you. This is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.

So I have not been recording. I think it's me not facing, wanting to face the fact that it's been a year since I almost started this, like very close to the year deadline. And I think overall it's just, I'm in this place where I'm like denying the fact that it's been a year, but it has in fact almost been a year.

And I do have a candidate that I talked to yesterday that became a deal. And when we call it a deal, typically that just means that they could have some potential to kind of go further down the journey.

So one of the things I did learn I try to communicate is that, hey, if you ever feel like you don't want to kind of move forward with the process, definitely just let me know.

It's something I'm going to reinforce over and over again, because I think what happens, what has happened, I should say, for me, is that people will just kind of like putter out or they'll ghost or whatever.

And it's almost as if they don't want to just say, hey, I'm not interested. And I want to try to create space and create that environment where people can just say that. So I try to emphasize that.

I was coming short on time. So I wanted to do that. Candidate. essentially wants to do something pretty fast, so we'll see what happens.

It'd be crazy if that ends up being the first deal. I don't necessarily see that, but it could always happen. I think the key is this candidate has the background, or the experience, I should say, and how do those skills and experience translate to business ownership and trying to figure that out.

But definitely with a great emphasis in data analytics, going through this Oracle, I think, as well, too, the entrepreneur assessment, that'll end up telling a lot.

At the end of the day, it's all around finding the right fit, you know, being able to present certain options that I know.

Just speaking, you know, with her, one of the things that really came up was, you know, has sports background experience, so I definitely want to sprinkle in on one of those things, but I think also Like, I asked around, hey, are you looking to do something full-time? Are you looking to do something part-time? What exactly, you know, does that look like?

And I think one of the things she ended up presenting and talking about was, you know, doing something full-time as soon as in a couple weeks. So I think for her, it was kind of one of those, like, I want to, you know, move in a different direction.

I think also, too, realizing that she wants something that has a little bit more flexibility in terms of being able to travel, you know, to see family and things like that, which are on a different coast. So gave me some ideas of some things to start to look at, you know, we'll ultimately kind of see what happens.

But again, just take it a step at a time, see what's available and see how to present those things. I think one of the things that I really be looking for is something that's really good for somebody that has a data analytics background.

And potentially could you know end up being like a franchise or an opportunity but I also know that There might be, you know, other voices. Make sure to honor those things and to kind of anticipate the objections and try to have conversations around that before I get further down the line.

That's just literally something that I've learned from going through the process. Like, I didn't know how hard it was to get people to the finish line, but there's certain objections you can start to bring up. Start to talk about and have open conversations around that. So I'm looking forward to seeing how this one goes.

It's something that is very encouraging because it came from LinkedIn. And I've been DMing through Facebook and have some conversations going, but I think being able to kind of open up that door to LinkedIn.

And really one of the things that I was just kind of realizing is that I was targeting probably the wrong person. And I think when you're targeting the wrong person, you're employing a strategy that way, then that's not going to help you get to where you want to be.

And it took me some time to do that. It took me some time to come off of that as well, too, because I was literally looking at how can I take this business list that I have and move it towards something else.

But the reality is that I needed to focus on the people that weren't in business. And did that also apply to my networking group as well, too.

So we'll see how that goes, see if I decide to keep my application there or pull it off. But either way, you know, things are moving. Not sure if they're moving forward or moving backwards or where they're moving, but they're moving. And I think that's what you always want to do is have that movement.

Yeah, that's just something that I know. I think it's day 286, not sure, but we'll see what day it is after I start to calculate everything. But yeah, things are moving, so we'll see what tomorrow holds. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

And of course, looking forward to giving you more and more updates.
