IAM2601 – Get Back in the Game: Basketball Workout
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.
In this episode, Gresh shares candid reflections on his current stage: experimenting with organic lead generation, resisting the pressure to buy leads, and navigating the inevitable ups and downs of building a business.
He recounts a nostalgic basketball‑style sprint workout that reminded him how past discipline still fuels his present mindset, emphasizing that mental blocks often become self‑fulfilling unless you keep moving forward.
A pending call with a potential funder highlights the mix of optimism and uncertainty that comes with early‑stage entrepreneurship.
Ultimately, Gresh stresses the importance of taking one day at a time, staying strategic, and leaning into what works while continually refining the approach.

Gresham Harkless Jr. 00:28
Hello. Hello. Hello. This is Gresh from the I AM CEO podcast. And this is a special episode of our I AM CEO podcast.
And this is actually going to be a snippet of a snippet. So to speak, I'm just doing an intro because I've been starting to document my journey into starting what is now called Blue Star Franchise.
We're also going to do a kind of sub-site within CBNation called Franchise CEO. So you'll see some links in the show notes related to that.
But I just want to give you a little bit more insight, give you a little bit more color in some of the aspects of why I'm actually doing this, because one of the things I was doing as I was going through training to start up this new business was realizing and hearing from the founder of FBA, the Franchise Brokers Association.
That it'd be really cool to document your journey, going through and building this out.
I think it's something that would be super helpful, obviously, for people that are looking for and thinking about starting franchises.
But frankly, if you're starting anything, any type of business, I think it's really cool to kind of just even see the journey and how it's been going from there.
So I'm going to share a few of those snippets from the from the first couple of videos that have been created. But definitely, of course, subscribe to our YouTube.
Check out a lot more where I figure out exactly where we're going to post this. So I have that information that's available to you.
But regardless, if you're a builder, continue to keep building, continue to do your thing. The world definitely needs exactly what you're trying to build.
It needs you to be your unique self. So make sure to run your own race because nobody can run your race like you. This is Gresh signing out. I hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.
And I did a nostalgic basketball workout. The workout kind of reminded me, it was a Flash 15. And it was talking around, listening to Jock Jams. We did a lot of things like sprints or get on the line.
I forgot what it's called. Usually, whenever we got bad report cards, stuff like that, or something like that happened, we had to do sprints and things like that. And I remember just basketball. taking the ball, I forgot what it's called.
You throw it against the basketball goal and then you have to run to the other side and just keep running. It was a while. Some of the things that you did, but you were in really good shape at that time.
And I did some of those workouts today and it just kind of reminded me of, again, that level that you had.
It doesn't matter if it was 10, 15, 20, 30 years ago, you had that in you. You still have that now. Sometimes you just operate differently.
I think sometimes your head gets in the way and you start to know like, hey, You start to think about, I can't do this.
And then it starts to become a reality. But I think where I'm at now is, again, just in sprints and those workouts and just kind of understanding where things are at.
I do have a call today with someone who's looking more so for funding, but has also been kind of evasive as far as giving their contact information. Who knows if I'll actually get a chance to touch base with her.
But we'll see what happens. But I've been very, a lot more organic with the way that I try to generate leads and opportunities don't have nearly as many.
I'm not getting a lead a day, but just being able to kind of get into this place where I'm hopefully having conversations and talking with people and, you know, just having adjustments.
We want to take people through, you know, having that first call and things like that.
And I think that the, you know, it's still in the back of my head. It's like the person's like, Hey, you know, you need to buy leads.
And even I've heard many people say you have to buy leads. And I'm like, no, I'm not going to do that.
I'm in this to generate leads. That was my goal. That was my opportunity. And I'm going to just experiment and see what happens.
I think the worst thing that I could do is continue to kind of rack up expenses and then say, I have to make this deal. And I'm frustrated because I want to make these deals, but I don't have to make these deals.
And I think when you get to the place that you have to, then you get in a place where you are less likely to experiment, less likely to try things. So I'm still in that place and still going to, you know, be more into that.
And we'll just kind of take it from here. Yeah, it's just very much so like those, those bevel and a little bit of Hilton basketball workouts where We were just running and trying to do what you can do at a basketball practice.
And you know that you're getting your butt kicked, or you know report cards come out. So some of the team isn't on, isn't eligible, and you have to kind of work through that.
So that's just some of the things you have to kind of work through and deal with. And you try to continue to take it a step at a time, try to continue to get better and do what you can.
You know, it's not all going to be sunshine and rainbows and gumdrops. And sometimes you're just going to have to, you know, get on the baseline and go.
And that's kind of like where I'm at, where I'm starting to look at restructuring things, refiguring things out and seeing what happens.
We'll take it a day at a time, but ultimately I want to be a lot more strategic with the things that I'm doing and lean more into what's working rather than what's not and be able to kind of have that as well.
Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. And of course, looking forward to giving you more and more updates.
