IAM2771 – Why a Lack of Purpose Stagnates Business Growth

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Fallacy of Constant Motion

A common struggle among builders is the tendency to confuse motion with direction, leading to a state of high productivity that remains fundamentally unfulfilled. While many leaders are capable and driven, they often experience a quiet tension caused by building without a clear understanding of why they are building what they are building. When a business grows faster than the founder's clarity, the resulting misalignment manifests as an endless cycle of urgency and exhaustion, where progress feels heavy rather than energizing.

Engineering Practical Purpose

In this episode, Susan Rose discusses how helping others discover and plan for their life’s purpose became the foundation for her own meaningful and sustainable growth. Purpose is not an abstract concept; it is a practical executive tool that functions as a filter for decision-making, prioritization, and the confidence to say no to misaligned opportunities. By slowing down to address deeper questions of intent, builders can avoid the trap of constructing massive organizational structures on shaky, misaligned foundations.

The Shift to Abundant Design

The definitive insight from this conversation is the shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundant mentality, where life and business are designed cohesively rather than as separate, competing entities. True momentum is created when a leader gives themselves permission to move past external expectations and operate with pure intention. This alignment ensures that as the business scales, the resulting clarity creates momentum that actually lasts, allowing for a trajectory that is both successful and personally resonant.

A lot of builders don't struggle because they lack talent. They struggle because they lack clarity. They're capable, they're driven, they're doing a lot of the things right. But underneath all of the activity, there's a quiet tension that they don't always name. I've been there. You're busy. You're not fully sure why you're building what you're building. If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear: success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I AM CEO Podcast.

In episode number 5 of the IMCO podcast, I spoke with Susan Rose, and she shared how helping women discover and plan for their life's purpose actually became the foundation for meaningful and sustainable growth for her. What really popped up for me during this conversation was how people often confuse motion with direction. You can be fully productive and still feel unfulfilled. There's a lot of people, and I've even been in this situation, where you can be growing and still feel disconnected from your work. For builders that are working in their business on every single day, this usually shows up in subtle ways. You say yes to opportunities that look good on paper but don't always feel aligned once you're in them. Just think about it. You keep moving forward, but the motivation feels thinner and thinner than it used to. What happens over time is there's a misalignment, and that misalignment turns into burnout. That burnout turns into frustration, or that feeling that you're building something that doesn't quite fit who you are and ultimately where you want to be. This episode highlights an important truth: purpose is not something that is abstract. It's actually something that is very practical. Purpose actually influences how you make decisions. It's ultimately like a filter— what you prioritize, what you have confidence to say no to. Even without that clarity, everything feels urgent, every opportunity feels equal, and that creates an endless amount of exhaustion. The work shared in this episode focuses on slowing down long enough to ask the deeper questions before building bigger structures on shaky foundations. And of course, that matters to builders because that's what we're ultimately building. Because when your business grows faster than your clarity, the pressure increases. That fulfillment doesn't. Here's a question that you can definitely think about a little bit more. Where am I building based on expectation instead of intention? That single reflection can reveal why progress feels heavy instead of energizing. Now, obviously, in this episode, we go deeper into how purpose can connects to planning, why alignment matters more than hustle, and how clarity creates momentum that actually lasts as well. What was really powerful is we had a conversation around this idea of operating from an abundant mentality rather than a scarcity mindset. We explored when you give yourself permission to design your lives and your business together cohesively rather than either or, you're thinking both and better. You don't have to treat them as separate things. And I think that's one of the most powerful things that we get reminded of in this episode.
