Kendra, are you ready to speak to the I AM CEO community?

[restrict paid=”true”]

01:51 – Kendra Perry

Absolutely.

01:52 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Well, let's do it then. So to kind of kick everything off, I wanted to rewind the clock here a little bit more on how things got started. Could you take us through what I call your CEO story? Well, that you get started with the business.

02:03 – Kendra Perry

Yeah. So, like, like you said, in my bio, I got started out as a health coach and it was not on purpose actually, cause at the time I was in my sort of mid-twenties and I was struggling personally with my own health. So I was reading a lot up on alternative health and wellness and diet, just trying to help myself. And in that same sort of time period, I was pursuing a career as a professional skier. I was trying to be a professional skier and I ended up jumping off a cliff, blowing my knee out, and needing reconstructive ACL surgery. And then also at that time, I was working in forestry. So definitely something you need a knee for. I hike around the bush all day and do stuff like that.

So it was definitely like kind of an identity crisis period because I always thought I would work in forestry and I always thought I would somehow be a skier and so I was like oh crap I can't ski can't pay my bills don't know what to do pretty hard time but ultimately I ended up starting a health blog called crazy happy healthy. And I just wrote a blog every day about health because I, well, I couldn't walk after the surgery. I was crippled for a few weeks and wasn't able to do a lot of the things I wanted to do. So I just got into writing, and thought I could make money as a blogger was not successful doing that. But then one day was listening to a podcast and I heard, it was the owner of a functional nutrition training school.

And all of a sudden I was like, Oh, that's interesting. Like maybe that's how I could make money. And the program seemed so great that initially I just sort of thought it would be for my own health to help myself. But once I was in it, I was like, oh, I can totally help other people. So I started offering my services as a health coach, did that for about 5 years, and then realized that I love the business and marketing side of things. And I found that a lot of my colleagues who were health coaches, wellness professionals were struggling with business. So I really saw a need and started offering my services for business and made that transition in about 2018.

04:02 – Gresham Harkless

Nice. Well, I'm definitely sorry about the injury, but it sounds like it propelled you in the right direction or in an entirely different direction. It's so funny because when I started a lot of the blog, I actually tore my Achilles tendon. And I was hating life, and I was mad, and I was stuck in bed. Couldn't do anything but work on the computer. But a lot of times those things that happen while they might seem dire and frustrating at that time, sometimes they redirect you to where you ultimately should be. So it sounds like you've had that experience too.

04:29 – Kendra Perry

Yeah, Absolutely. And it was definitely one of the most pivotal if I can say that word, right? Moments of my life. And it was really hard at the time, but I'm so grateful for it because, you know, forestry is a really tough profession. It's not something that you do well as you age, because you're bushwhacking. So it's pretty hard on the body.

04:49 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, you start to wear your body down. So I know you touched on it a little bit. Could you take us through how you serve your clients and what exactly are the products and services that you provide?

05:00 – Kendra Perry

Sure. Yeah. So I primarily offer my services in the form of what I call live group experiences. So I really love to teach my programs live. I love the energy. I love kind of working people through things that way. And like you mentioned in my bio, My primary signature program is Health Coach Accelerator. It's kind of like a business basics course for health coaches who want to build an online business. So it's kind of like the starting point. And then I usually funnel them into another program that I have called Profitable Groups. And that teaches them how to create launch and monetize the group program. So it's for clients who are, you know, working with one-on-one, they're kind of, you know, maybe a bit burnt out or they want to scale their income and impact.

So I teach them how to, launch a group coaching program. So those are sort of my 2 primary business coaching programs. I actually have this other course that I don't really advertise and I primarily sell it to a functional health organization that I used to contract for but it's called the expert. It teaches practitioners how to interpret and analyze hair tissue, and mineral analysis, which is this random functional test that teaches or assesses the mineral content of the body. So I help practitioners in utilizing that in their practice. So kind of super side niche, but that is something I do as well.

06:17 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, but a lot of times those huge opportunities are within the niches. So it's great to kind of hear about that because a lot of times you're able to go so deep that nobody else has done that deep work and you're able to kind of create your own lane. But I love the 2 different group coaching programs and definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but I almost feel like when you have that opportunity to kind of go through it, especially with a group, it provides that not a, not by yourself kind of mentality. You get that community, you get to kind of bounce ideas and really be part of something as you're building and growing.

06:47 – Kendra Perry

Yeah, I agree. And I used to run that program as a one-on-one private coaching program. But what I realized is that there's so much mindset stuff that comes with being a new business owner. And a lot of my clients thought that these blocks they were having were unique to them. And I realized that it was much more effective to run it in a group experience, because then they actually see that they're not alone, like you just said, and they realize that like, oh, this isn't these thoughts aren't unique. It's not true. Everyone's having this, this is just a part of the process. So I just think that community piece, like you mentioned, is pretty powerful.

07:21 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, absolutely. You start to really create those that, you know, tremendous opportunities, because so many times we get stuck in, Oh, I'm the only one going through, you know, whatever this issue is. But when you're able to kind of bounce those ideas, have that community kind of lean on, it helps you kind of focus on where sometimes you need to be, which is on that action and continue to move forward rather than on, oh, you know, this has only happened to me, I'm doing this all wrong, which we can sometimes fall into.

07:45 – Kendra Perry

Yeah, totally agree.

07:46 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So now I wanted to ask you for what I call your secret sauce. And this could be for you personally or your business or a combination of both. But what do you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique?

07:58 – Kendra Perry

Yeah. So I think there's a few different things, I think, in terms of, my work with health coaches, I think what kind of sets me apart is I've done what they want to do. You know, I did the health coaching business, and I grew it to multiple 6 figures. So I really understand the wellness industry and its nuances because it is different than other types of coaching industries. But another big focus that I have is on business minimalism and sustainability. Cause I think there's a lot of information out there that speaks to like multiple income streams and diversify and all this stuff. But I think coaches can be successful and make a good income with all those bells and whistles. And by keeping their business model very basic.

I love business minimalism because I think, especially when you're new like you're a solopreneur, you don't have a lot of time, you have limited resources. So I think just keeping things super basic and not focusing on all the fancy extras is a really good way to initially build your business. Plus I don't really buy into hustle culture. So I really teach my students how to create a sustainable business model. So it supports their health because they're health coaches. They care about health. They don't want to burn themselves out. And I want to help them create a business that actually creates freedom. So we don't just basically create another stressful job for them.

09:14 – Gresham Harkless

I wanted to switch gears a little bit, And I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an Apple book or a habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

09:25 – Kendra Perry

So it's actually breathwork. I've gotten into breath work in 2020 And I'm like crazy monkey brain. I'm very much in my head all the time, spinning, spinning, spinning, strategizing constantly. And I've really loved breathwork because it helps bring me back into my body. It gives me energy and it creates focus. So when I do a breath work session before I go to work in the morning, I just feel more focused, more empowered, more energized, and just less frazzled and more connected. And that's important to me because I'm definitely someone who can get, who can spin out of control in my brain.

10:02 – Gresham Harkless

And so I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So this could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something you would tell a client or if you hopped into a time machine, you might tell your younger business self.

10:14 – Kendra Perry

Yeah, so I mean, I would say work on personal development. And we've kind of talked a bit about mindset, but I just feel like growing a business, especially in the first few years, it's such a mindset game. The biggest reason I see new business owners not succeed is because of those blocks, imposter syndrome, poor self-worth, fear, perfectionism, and all those sorts of things. And I think because building a business is so much, it happens outside your comfort zone. It will trigger childhood wounds and trauma, it'll trigger self-worth issues.

And so really embracing personal development and being willing to work through those things, with someone, with a counselor or life coach or something like that, actually makes the business building piece so much easier. And for my younger business self, I think, knowing that I would have embraced it a lot sooner rather than resist it for the first couple of years until I realized that like, Oh, I need to do some personal work because this business is just triggering the shit out of me.

11:14 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, Absolutely. And I think so many times we forget, you know, the business, we forget the, I always say the human aspect of business. And I think so many times, you know, you see it, you know, accounting and all those things have their place in the management of all those things. But we forget that people, people, peace. And a lot of times when we're trying to grow, and even if you're trying to grow, you know, something from scratch, sometimes we, it's hard to often get outside of ourselves and beyond ourselves. Where having somebody to work on having a team or group or something like that you provide as well to allow you that opportunity to really learn those skills to get better, but at the same time, be able to get beyond yourself as well too, which is so powerful.

11:52 – Kendra Perry

Yeah, I agree. It's all about awareness and just being able to acknowledge it because they obviously have this mindset stuff, it still happens. Yeah. Regardless of where you are in your business, I still get these things. I just can say, Oh, hello, I see you. Thank you. I know you're here to protect me, but like, I'm cool. I'm good. I'm going to just keep going.

12:09 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, exactly. You get that, that fight or flight mentality or that time period that kind of comes in. So absolutely appreciate that. And so now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different quote-unquote CEOs on this show. So Kendra, what does being a CEO mean to you?

12:28 – Kendra Perry

I think being a CEO means being in charge of my own life and building something that creates personal freedom, but also most importantly, transforms the people I serve and ultimately the world, right? Cause I think we can change the world one client at a time. Right. So I think that's what being a CEO means to me.

12:47 – Gresham Harkless

Yeah, I absolutely love that because so many times, again, we're looking so far beyond, especially if you're really ambitious and you want to have a huge impact. We forget that a lot of times it starts with us and being able to kind of make sure our cup is full and be able to make sure that we're able to give. But 2, when we're able to do that, we're able to provide a tremendous amount of service that impacts the people in the world and creates this kind of watershed moment or domino effect where it starts to impact more and more people. And it does have an impact upon the world, but we kind of overlook those, those first dominoes, I guess that we can make fall.

13:21 – Kendra Perry

Absolutely. Totally agree.

13:23 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, Kendra truly appreciates that. I appreciate your time even more. What I wanted to do is pass you the mic, so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional you can let our readers and listeners know. And of course, how best I can get a hold of you and find out about all the awesome things that you're working on.

13:38 – Kendra Perry

Yeah. So for anything additional, I just say, you got this, you got this, you can do it, just keep going. And then the best way to get in touch with me would be probably Instagram. That's where I'm the most active. My handle is Kendra Perry, Inc. And I also have a podcast called The Wealthy Coach. So for anyone who is an online coach, even if they're not a health coach, even if they're like a fitness coach or mindset, personal development, it's all relevant. I give away a lot of mindset and marketing strategy on that podcast. So those would be the best ways to connect with me.

14:10 – Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. And we will definitely have the links and information in the show notes for the podcast, for people to get ahold of you about all the services you provide as well too. And I love and appreciate that reminder so many times we forget and need that kind of cheering crew and that lets them remind us that we have it and we just need to kind of continue to keep going and not quit. So appreciate you for reminding us of that as well too and I hope you have a great rest of the day.

02:03 - Kendra Perry

It's not something that you do well as you age, because you're basically bushwhacking. So it's pretty hard on the body.

04:49 - Gresham Harkless

Yeah, you start to wear your body down. So I know you touched on it a little bit. Could you take us through like how you serve your clients and what exactly are those products and services that you provide for?

05:00 - Kendra Perry

Sure. Yeah. So I primarily offer my services in the form of what I call live group experiences. So I really love to teach my programs live. I love the energy. I love kind of working people through things that way. And like you mentioned in my bio, My primary signature program is Health Coach Accelerator. 07:45 - Kendra Perry

Yeah, totally agree.

07:46 - Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So now I wanted to ask you for what I call your secret sauce. And this could be for you personally or your business or a combination of both. But what do you feel kind of sets you apart and makes you unique?

07:58 - Kendra Perry

I love business minimalism because I think, especially when you're new, like you're a solopreneur, you don't have a lot of time, you have limited resources. So I think just keeping things super basic and not focusing on all the fancy extras is a really good way to initially build your business. Plus I don't really buy into hustle culture. So I really teach my students how to create a business model that is sustainable. So it supports their health because they're health coaches. They care about health. They don't want to burn themselves out. And I want to help them create a business that actually creates freedom. So we don't just basically create another stressful job for them.

09:14 - Gresham Harkless

I wanted to switch gears a little bit, And I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an Apple book or a habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

09:25 - Kendra Perry

So it's actually breathwork. I've really gotten into breath work in 2020 And I'm like crazy monkey brain. I'm very much in my head all the time, spinning, spinning, spinning, strategizing constantly. And I've really loved breathwork because it really helps bring me back into my body. It gives me energy and it creates focus. So when I do a breath work session before I go to work in the morning, I just feel more focused, more empowered, more energized, and just less frazzled and more connected. And that's really important to me because I'm definitely someone who can get, who can definitely spin out of control in my brain.

10:02 - Gresham Harkless

And so I wanted to ask you now for what I call a CEO nugget. So this could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something you would tell a client or if you hopped into a time machine, you might tell your younger business self.

10:14 - Kendra Perry

Yeah, so I mean, I would say work on personal development. And we've kind of talked a bit about mindset, but I just feel like growing a business, especially in the first few years, it's such a mindset game. And the biggest reason I see new business owners not succeed is because of those blocks, imposter syndrome, poor self-worth, fear, perfectionism, all those sorts of things.

11:14 - Gresham Harkless

Yeah, Absolutely. And I think so many times we forget, you know, the business, we forget the, I always say the human aspect of business. And I think so many times, you know, you see it, you know, accounting and all those things have their place in management of all those things.

11:52 - Kendra Perry

Yeah, I agree. It's all about awareness and just being able to acknowledge because they obviously these mindset stuff, it still happens. Yeah. Regardless of where you are in your business, I still get these things. I just am able to say, Oh, hello, I see you. Thank you. I know you're here to protect me, but like, I'm cool. I'm good. I'm going to just keep going.

12:09 - Gresham Harkless

Yeah, exactly. You get that, that fight or flight mentality or that time period that kind of comes in. So absolutely appreciate that. And so now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different quote-unquote CEOs on this show. So Kendra, what does being a CEO mean to you?

12:28 - Kendra Perry

I think being a CEO means being in charge of my own life and building something that creates personal freedom, but also most importantly, transforms the people I serve and ultimately the world, right? Cause I think we can change the world one client at a time. Right. So I think that's what being a CEO means to me.

12:47 - Gresham Harkless

Yeah, I absolutely love that because so many times, again, we're looking so far beyond, especially if you're really ambitious and you want to have a huge impact. We forget that a lot of times it starts with us and being able to kind of make sure our cup is full and be able to make sure that we're able to give. But 2, when we're able to do that, we're able to provide a tremendous amount of service that impacts the people in the world and creates this kind of watershed moment or domino effect where it starts to impact more and more people. And it does have an impact upon the world, but we kind of overlook those, those first dominoes, I guess that we can make fall.

13:21 - Kendra Perry

Absolutely. Totally agree.

13:23 - Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, Kendra truly appreciates that. I appreciate your time even more. What I wanted to do is pass you the mic, so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional you can let our readers and listeners know. And of course, how best I can get a hold of you and find out about all the awesome things that you're working on.

13:38 - Kendra Perry

14:10 - Gresham Harkless

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. And we will definitely have the links and information in the show notes for the podcast, for people to get ahold of you about all the services you provide as well too. And I love and appreciate that reminder so many times we forget and need that kind of cheering crew and that that let them remind us that we have it and we just need to kind of continue to keep going and don't quit. So appreciate you for reminding us of that as well too and I hope you have a great rest of the day.
