IAM2923 – Study Success and Failure꞉ The Clues Builders Ignore

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man in front of a collage of faces. Text reads: “Study Success and Failure: The Clues Builders Ignore. Season 9 Episode #2923.”.The Trap of Reinventing Every Lesson

A pervasive and inefficient roadblock for many builders is attempting to figure out every single business challenge from scratch. The reality of enterprise is that very little is completely brand new; others have walked the path before you, succeeded, failed, adjusted, and left distinct roadmaps along the way. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from real estate broker, investor, and training principal Dan on episode 103 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why success leaves clues, but so does failure—and how studying both transforms your business strategy.

The Strategy and Operations Pillars: Dissecting the Full Picture

True execution at the intersection of the Strategy and Operations Pillars proves that studying past performance requires analyzing more than just attractive wins. While founders love replicating glamorous success routines, models, and habits, failure provides an exceptionally clear, unfiltered education.

By objectively diagnosing why an offer failed to convert, why a high-profile hire didn't pan out, or where a recurring handoff fell apart, you pinpoint precise operational vulnerabilities. Rather than purely celebrating wins and ignoring missteps, leaning into the lessons embedded within your losses provides the critical data needed to refine your systems and safeguard your bottom line.

Slowing Down to Observe the Patterns

The core takeaway for any CEO is that better strategic alignment begins by creating the stillness needed to observe existing patterns. When leaders operate in constant reaction mode, rushing relentlessly from task to task, they blindly repeat operational mistakes without ever pausing to study the root cause.

Practices like meditation and intentional reflection allow you to slow down so you can ultimately speed up execution with clarity and precision. Ask yourself this defining question: “What critical clue has success or failure already handed you that you haven't slowed down enough to truly study?”. Becoming an intentional student of what works and what breaks is the ultimate lever required to eliminate blind spots and scale your enterprise with confidence.

A lot of builders tried to figure out everything from scratch, but the truth is very little in business is completely brand new. There's nothing new under the sun is the saying. Someone has usually gone before you, succeeded, failed, adjusted, and left clues along the way.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm Gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share, drawn from thousands of the episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content: visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

A lot of builders tried to figure out everything from scratch, but the truth is very little in business is completely brand new. There's nothing new under the sun is the saying. Someone has usually gone before you, succeeded, failed, adjusted, and left clues along the way. That's what came up during episode number 103 of the I Am CEO Podcast with And at the moment, in the time of our conversation, Dan was an associate broker in Virginia, broker in Maryland, operating principal and owner of Keller Williams Realty office in Alexandria-Kingstowne area, and involved in real estate investing, training, and other ventures as well. The idea I really want to spend some more time with is when Dan talked about studying both success and failure. He talked a lot around about looking at people of excellence and studying their mindsets, behaviors, time, their physiology, environment, and even their relationships. But he also pointed out something very powerful, which we don't talk about enough, I think, in entrepreneurship and business. Failure leaves clues too. And that is extremely important. As builders, we often study success because it's attractive, it's sexy. It's the thing that we want. We want the playbook, we want the model, we want the routines, the strategy, and the habits. But failure can teach just as much, maybe even more, if we're willing to look at it honestly. The saying is success is a lousy teacher because usually when you fail at something, you can pinpoint exactly what did not happen. You ask questions like, why did that offer not convert? Why did the client relationship break down? Why did they— that hire not work? Why did the team keep missing the same handoff? If we only celebrate the wins and hide the lessons from the losses, we miss half of the education. During our conversation, Dan also talked about a lot of other things, including slowing down to speed up through meditation that connects Because you need enough stillness often to actually observe the clues. We often go to thing, to thing, to thing, to A, to B, to C, and we continue on that we don't take and create space so that we can actually look and see what's working and what's not. If you're always reacting, you may keep repeating patterns without ever studying them to see what went right or frankly what went wrong. This connects to the strategy and operations pillar. Better strategy often starts by paying attention to the patterns already visible around you. Here's the idea I carry, I carry with you. Don't just work harder, become a better student of what works and what breaks. Here's something you can ask yourself. What clue has success or failure already shown you that you haven't slowed down enough to study? Because we as builders don't have to reinvent every lesson. It's a much more advanced way to learn and to build and to get better by learning from others and what they've been able to do. Sometimes the wisdom is already in the pattern. If you're someone who's been pushing forward without studying what the results are telling you, this conversation with Dan is definitely one worth revisiting.
