IAM2798 – Why Meaningful Impact Is Relational, Not Just Transactional
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Moving Beyond the Transactional Widget
Many businesses remain trapped in the cycle of solving only practical problems—focusing strictly on efficiency, convenience, and productivity. While these are necessary, true impact occurs when a builder stops seeing their product as a mere “widget” and starts seeing it as a tool for improving lives. In this episode, we explore why shifting your perspective from the transactional to the relational completely changes the game.
The Power of Emotional and Relational Healing
Drawing from a conversation with Maribeth Decker, who helps people and their pets reconnect, we highlight a vital lesson for every entrepreneur: meaningful work addresses emotional needs as well as practical ones. Whether you are providing marketing services or animal communication, you are often solving a deeper problem—such as saving time for family or helping a client create a lasting legacy. When people feel understood and seen on a human level, loyalty grows organically.
Engineering Deeper Connections
The core takeaway for any leader is to evaluate the “Human Pillar” of their business. This requires asking a fundamental question: “What emotional need does my work support beyond the practical service I provide?”. By cultivating and deepening relationships—whether with clients, customers, or family—you transform your business into something that sees the human behind the problem and provides a solution that resonates on an emotional level.

Business isn't always transactional. Sometimes, and often I feel like to truly make an impact, it's relational. When people feel understood and seen on a human level, they form stronger and deeper connections. The real takeaway here is that meaningful services and products even address emotional needs as well as practical ones.
If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose, even when you feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

Many businesses focus on solving practical problems, efficiency, convenience and productivity. But there's those select businesses that actually operate on an even deeper level. They focus on healing. On IM CEO podcast episode number 28, I spoke with Maribeth Decker, an entrepreneur who helps people and their pets heal and reconnect. What really came up during this conversation was how powerful emotional connection can be. A relationship with animals often represent trust, comfort and companionship. I had that same relationship with my dog, Star, when she passed away. When those connections are strengthened and fostered, people feel supported in ways that go way beyond words. And for builders that are working in their business every day, this highlights a very important lesson. Business isn't always transactional. Sometimes, and often I feel like to truly make an impact, it's relational. When people feel understood and seen on a human level, they form stronger and deeper connections. The real takeaway here is that meaningful services and products Even address emotional needs as well as practical ones. I say often on the podcast, don't forget the human part of business and the human part of life. I think so often with our products and services, we get caught in. This is what we do. This is the widget that we've created. But in reality, how are you improving somebody's life? What impact are you doing? Are you saving them time? Are you really focused on healing like Mary Beth talked about? Or are you doing something else that provide some type of impactful value for us? Because when we start to position and think about our products and services from this perspective, it completely changes the game because it's not just a widget. It's something that changes people's lives. It's something that sees somebody as a human, sees a problem that they have, and provides a solution for that problem. When you are able to operate your business at that level, loyalty naturally grows, and it does it very organically because you are understanding the human part of business and you're able to solve that problem not just on a surface level, but on an emotional, relational level. Where does this come up? Obviously, the human and people pillar, because you understand how human connection strengthens those relationships. Here's something I really want you to consider. What emotional need does my work support beyond the practical service that I provide? Think about it. When you go deeper, you know, you don't just think about, hey, I provide marketing, or, hey, I'm a matchmaker and a connection person. What I'm doing is I'm actually saving people's time so that they can spend more time with their family, of why, the reason why they're doing everything, or I'm helping people to market their business so that they can make a bigger, bigger impact in their communities, so that at the end of the day, they can be seen as a mayor and they create a legacy in the community in which they live, or they get to spend more time with their wife, their son, their daughter, their grandparents, whatever it is, that's the emotional connection that you're doing. That awareness often deepens the impact that you make with your products and services. But you just have to start understanding that and have to start having those conversations. This episode explores healing, connection, empathy, and how understanding relationships can transform both people and their animals. And it's not just an animal thing. It's all about those relationships and something that we can carry with our animals and with our pets, but also in aspect of our lives with our wives, our sons, our daughters, whatever it is, our grandparents, the person that we just did a business deal with our clients, our customers. All these are relationships that can be cultivated and deepened a lot more. If you're somebody like me that believes connection is at the heart of any meaningful work, this conversation is definitely worth listening to and learning from on a deeper, deeper level.
