Awesome. Let's do it. So to kick everything off, I wanted to, I guess, rewind the clock a little bit and hear a little bit more about how you got started. Could you take us through your CEO story while you start your business?

[00:01:37.00] – Dr. Shara Posner

Sure. So I come from a line, actually, of CEOs. My dad was a CEO. He was like a turnaround guy when he was younger. And when I was in high school, I knew that I wanted to do something that involved sports. I was an athlete in every, season. When I got into, the University of Maryland for my undergraduate, I was in a special program. When I was in the program, was a science and engineering program, but I knew I didn't want to be an engineer, so I asked if I could do an externship. I got an externship in, Northern Virginia, actually in Burke at a chiropractor's office, thinking I wanted to maybe be a physical therapist or some sort of sports medicine. But when clients would walk into his office and they'd be bent over in pain and they'd walk out of his office high-fiving him and all he used was his hands, I was just fascinated.

So that's kind of how I got into the science. I had never even really been adjusted before. I was just like, this is cool. I don't have to spend a career in school, as most medical doctors do. It's a four-year program, but you do your residency inside the four-year degree for chiropractic. So when I got to school and I actually started practising and, you know, headaches that I had been having for over twenty years started to resolve with just some chiropractic. Headaches that I've been taking medication like Emerge and Imitrex and all sorts of stuff for Resolved, I was like, that's it. I'm sold. This is awesome. So I have a very strong passion for, you know, chiropractic in general, and, you know, came to start practising in, Northern Virginia. And when I was practicing in Northern Virginia, I was working for a very high-volume clinic.

And, you know, I was just like, wow, I'm working hard. And all the things that I was afraid of, in terms of opening my own business or my own chiropractic office, were not the things that I was learning. I was hired basically to be a workhorse, you know, to do to do the job, to get the adjustments done, to see the patients, to bill, for my services. But I wasn't learning any of the back end stuff, like them, how to bill, how to run a business, how to, you know, do your QuickBooks, all those things, those business applications that I was hoping to gain so that I could open my own business in the future, was not happening.

So very quickly, I realized that, if I'm gonna do this, I'm just gonna, you know, jump into the deep end and, you know, use my dad as a resource, because he had had, you know, such great success in his career running businesses. And just go for it. And that's how I ended up in Old Town. I opened a practice in two thousand four and have never looked back. Always expanding, and incorporating new services into my product, because I do think there's a limitation as to what I can do as a chiropractor. So that's about four years in our practice. I was like, let's do some massage, some acupuncture, let's add some stuff to the practice to make it more comprehensive, more whole body, and provide a better service for, all the clients. That's kind of where I'm at now, you know, just humming along.

Nice. I love that. I love the DNA, the entrepreneurial DNA as well too, and being able to kinda call on that to wanna start your own business in your own, organization. But I think too is being able to, as you mentioned, lean on your debt as well. When you are, you know, kinda taking those steps and and taking that leap of faith, so to speak, and build the business and be able to to tap into that, success mindset and be able to to to bring into your practice.

Right. Yeah. I feel like, for me, I have some challenges, you know, taking orders. So, it was very difficult to work for somebody and, like, you know, put in so much time and energy, and not reap the full reward, you know, when you're working eighty work eighty hour work weeks for somebody else and you're like, man, you know, if I'm gonna put in this kind of time, I'm gonna do it for myself. So that's kind of, you know, which gave me the impetus to, you know, resign from that position and start doing my own thing. I think, that in conjunction with knowing that there are a lot of people out there that just have an entrepreneurial spirit like my dad, you know, gave me that ability to be able to kinda make that transition pretty seamlessly.

[00:06:28.00] – Gresham Harkless

Yeah. Absolutely. I think, once you and then a lot of people are probably listening and shaking their heads as well too, because I think once you see the light at the end of the tunnel or you're on that other side or even know of that other side, it's hard to work those eighty hour weeks and put in all that time and energy when you feel like you can be putting in the same amount, and probably even making a bigger impact as you've been able to, again, you know, do, obviously, the chiropractor, but also add in the other, kind of modalities as well too. So, I know I touched on it. You did as well too. Could you take us through exactly how you work with clients and the different ways in which you provide that health, to, the area?

[00:07:07.39] – Dr. Shara Posner

Sure. So, in my organization, I have myself and an associate. So, there's an associate chiropractor, and then I have some contractors we work with, all underneath the same roof. So when a client is interested in one of our services, they'll call the office and set up an appointment. If they're coming in for chiropractic with an evaluation, that can be also if there's no, you know, really kind of red flag, so to speak, meaning that there was something that I may want to do some more diagnostics or, some other kind of examination on so that I don't create any kind of issue, then we'll do an adjustment on the first visit, set up treatment plans, prescribe exercises, and just work on whatever it is that seems to be giving them a whole body, health.

If I find, which, you know, most cases this happens, some people need more muscle work than I can perform, because, you know, frankly, I'm a chiropractor and, although I've had massage courses, some people do things better than I do, and, you know, knowing that limitation was one of the reasons why I brought in an acupuncturist and a massage therapist. So making those referrals to the massage therapist in-house is great because then on behalf of the patient, I'm communicating to a therapist, hey, These are the following muscles that I need worked on and that they're having issues with.

And then also the acupuncturist too. So with the acupuncturist, the really great thing is aside from musculoskeletal pain, we can now help all sorts of, other conditions. For example, she has great success with, infertility, pain management, high blood pressure, and smoking cessation. So, all of these things are things that you typically wouldn't see a chiropractor for, but now we're getting much more into the health care arena or the health, sickness prevention arena. I like to call it, because, you know, health care is really about when you're sick, you go to the doctor. I want the patients that are feeling great to come to us to stay feeling great. So that's kind of how it works in practice. We have lots of overlap. All the practitioners are talking with each other and discussing cases. If, those cases cases go to see several of the practitioners within the practice. Yep. That's pretty much it.

Nice. No. I absolutely love that. And, the word that was coming to me is, like, that synergy that you have, you know, under, you know, the same roof. And I always heard, that the way that you should and I, you know, I use that word lightly should or the way that I would want to. Let me just use my perspective of how you wanna take care of your health you always wanna approach it kind of like a car where you're going to get your maintenance on a regular basis. You're not doing it you're doing it more, I guess, preventative, health care where you're taking care of those things so that you're always kinda optimal, and you get those check-ins on a regular basis, whether that be the acupuncture or the chiropractic and massage and things like that that help you to be your best self before those things or those, pitfalls can sometimes happen in your health.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So I wanted to ask you now for what I call your secret sauce. And this could be for yourself or your business, but what do you feel kinda sets you apart and makes you unique?

[00:10:27.79] – Dr. Shara Posner

My secret sauce. I mean, I would say in the past for a while, it was, having accountability coaches. So even though, like, I'm relatively successful in business, and I tend to have, very good focus, still having somebody hold me accountable and checking in with me, and actually, you know, vocalizing my goals, and then having somebody check to make sure that I'm meeting those goals, that I'm on target for those goals, has been an amazing hack. I feel like even, you know, your largest, most successful entrepreneurs have a confidant that holds them accountable. You know, and often, perhaps, maybe it's the meetings that they hold in their business. So they have those goal-setting meetings that they have with their staff.

That's their way of being accountable. So, you know, my hat is fine for me because I know I need this to have some way or some form to be held accountable, either through a business coach, you know, in the past, you know, having my other ear as a resource. Now I like to, read a lot of books that are about business, and kind of bounce those ideas off of, people who are in similar industries as myself, like some colleagues. But having somebody that I check in with that's like, so did you, accomplish that thing that you said you were gonna do? And I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, because being able to bring it to somebody like, look, look at what I did. I met that goal is, you know, probably one of the best hacks out there.

Yeah. Absolutely. So I wanted to switch gears a little bit, and I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO hack. So this could be like an Apple book or a habit that you have, but what's something that makes you more effective and efficient?

[00:12:18.70] – Dr. Shara Posner

Right. So, my CEO hack, is I do this thing in the morning called, the three m's, which are, meditation, mindfulness, and movement. So every single morning, I wake up and I don't touch my phone until I am, like, in the car at the office. So I'm not allowed to look at my phone. I'm not allowed to get my emails. I'm not allowed to look on Instagram at all until I get into the office. So the process of taking a shower, brushing my teeth, getting my breakfast together, packing my lunch, all of that stuff is done completely and totally, electronic free.

Awesome. So now I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something, that you would tell a client or somebody you work with. Or if you hacked into a time machine, you might even tell your younger business self.

Know the value of your time. So what I mean by that, in my life, there are a lot of things that I can do, but I choose not to because other people may do them better, and my time is worth money.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Doctor Shahar, I truly appreciate that. And now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different, quote, unquote, CEOs on the show. So, doctor Shara, what does being me what does being a CEO mean to you?

I think being a CEO means, you know, it's such a tough question. It's so broad. It can be. I think being a CEO is just, you know, taking, onerous of your of your leadership, being a responsible leader, in the sense that, you're making decisions knowing that you have a team behind you and supporting that team. So to me, you know, it, being a CEO is actually like just being a good leader.

Love that, definition and that perspective, and I appreciate that. I appreciate your time even more. And then there was another book called Essentialism by Matt, by Greg Mc I don't know how to say his last name, but McKeown, I think those two books kind of, like, just opened my eyes about, like, you know, am I on the path?

And if I'm not on the path, then either outsource it or just don't do it. So every single morning, I wake up and I don't touch my phone until I am, like, in the car at the office. So I'm not allowed to look at my phone. I'm not allowed to get my emails. I'm not allowed to look on Instagram at all until I get into the office. So the process of taking a shower, brushing my teeth, getting my breakfast together, packing my lunch, all of that stuff is done completely and totally, electronic free.

Awesome. So now I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO nugget. So that could be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice. It might be something, that you would tell a client or somebody you work with. Or if you hacked into a time machine, you might even tell your younger business self.

Know the value of your time. So what I mean by that, in my life, there are a lot of things that I can do, but I choose not to because other people may do them better, and my time is worth money.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Doctor Shahar, I truly appreciate that. And now I wanted to ask you my absolute favorite question, which is the definition of what it means to be a CEO. And we're hoping to have different, quote, unquote, CEOs on the show. So, doctor Shara, what does being me what does being a CEO mean to you?

I think being a CEO means, you know, it's that's such a tough question. It's so broad. It can be. I think being a CEO is just, you know, taking, onerous of your of your leadership, being a responsible leader, in the sense that, you're making decisions knowing that you have a team behind you and supporting that team. So to me, you know, it, being a CEO is actually like just being a good leader.

Love that, definition and that perspective, and I appreciate that. I appreciate your time even more. You know, I'm sure a lot of people are really into Purple Cow by Seth Godin, which was a great book and kind of, you know, helped me from a business perspective. And then there was another book called Essentialism by Matt, by Greg Mc I don't know how to say his last name, but McKeown, I think those two books kind of, like, just opened my eyes about, like, you know, am I on the path? And if I'm not on the path, then either outsource it or just don't do it.
