Hello, hello, hello, this is Gresh from the I AM CEO podcast and I have a very special guest on the show today. I have Sharon Roemmel of PracticallyEnlightenedYou. Sharon, it is awesome to have you on the show.
Sharon Roemmel 0:38
Thank you. It's great to be here. I appreciate you inviting me.
Gresham Harkless 0:41
No problem, no problem. And what I wanted to do was just read a little bit more about Sharon so you can hear about all the awesome things that she's been able to accomplish. And Sharon Rommel helps women who are excited about their purpose become equally passionate about taking care of their number one asset.
As a self-care expert, she draws on over 30 years of working in the wellness and empowerment field. Sharon's experience includes being a certified coach, a registered yoga teacher, an aroma therapist, and a licensed massage therapist. In addition to working with individuals, teaching classes, and leading retreats, Sharon has been interviewed as an expert in national and local media, including Natural Health magazine and on mindfulness mode podcasts. Her articles appear in her blog, align and thrive as well as in publications such as massage and bodywork. Sharon, are you ready to speak to the I AM CEO community?
Sharon Roemmel 1:35
I am. Thank you, Gresham.
Gresham Harkless 1:37
Awesome. Well, what I wanted to do was ask you a little bit more about your CEO story and hear exactly what led you to start your business.
[restrict paid=”true”]
Sharon Roemmel 1:43
Right, so I started in social work, I have a degree and did that for about 10 years. And I realized I wanted to do something more holistic. So this was back in the late 80s, I sat down and I decided I was going to be a holistic health practitioner. But I couldn't find a program to train me with that I couldn't find a job with that.
So I decided to create it myself. So I became a Licensed Massage Therapist. Then I added those other things I added yoga and then and then Aromatherapy and Coaching and leading retreats. So I'm one of those people, I didn't set out to be a CEO or to own my business, which I know some people do, they're really excited about that. For me, it was more of, I want to do this thing, and I can't find somebody to hire me that's going to do this thing. So I'm just going to create it myself. And it's been I mean, if I had planned to do that, I would have known that it was a good thing for me. But I didn't even know that was gonna be so great.
Gresham Harkless 2:38
Yeah, that makes sense. It's funny how life and the universe kind of takes grants that set you on the right path, whether you want to or not. And sometimes when you're looking for something, and you can't find it, and true entrepreneurial firm, you just decided that, hey I'm going to create it. So I wanted to drill down a little bit deeper and get an idea of exactly how you help serve your clients. What are the products or services that you have?
Sharon Roemmel 2:59
Okay, great. So I see people remotely for coaching. And those are the women that you were talking about in the bio, women who know that they want to do something, they know that there's a purpose, but either they're not sure what it is. So they need some clarity, they feel stuck. Sometimes they feel overwhelmed. Sometimes they started their dream business or their ideal job. But the dream isn't quite lining up with reality. So they're saying well, this isn't quite what I signed up for. And maybe this isn't really what I want to do, or I need to do it in a different way. So the two main things I help people with in terms of coaching is the purpose and self-care. I also teach yoga and which I call purposeful yoga.
So I do the same thing with yoga and rather than having people serve a form like you're supposed to look this specific way, do this many poses in this order. It's more about what's my intention as a student, and what I want to get out of yoga. The massage, it's about helping people reduce stress and find balance in their lives so they can do what it is that they want to do. So those and then the retreats, too. So I have a retreat coming up in Mexico, it's a yoga retreat. But again, with that focus on how to be purposeful, and you know, what do you want this time to do for you?
Gresham Harkless 4:14
I love that, I love that & I love how you have the different modalities, I guess this might be the right time. And you're able to keep that consistent with the idea of purpose and the idea of the kind of fulfilling exactly what it is you're wanting to do. So you're just not doing yoga just for doing it, you're doing it from a purposeful mindset and a purposeful kind of, I guess, action, so to speak.
Sharon Roemmel 4:32
Yeah, I mean, I like a lot of writing my life, obviously. But I also feel like having multiple tools really helps me help people. We might start on one path and say, Oh this is another tool that would be useful for you here. So it's I feel like again, it's that what started me on this path, in the beginning, was to have a more holistic way that could really address the body, mind, spirit, energy, and emotions, not just people on one level.
Gresham Harkless 4:57
That makes perfect sense that makes perfect sense. Now I wanted to ask you and drill down a little bit deeper, you might have already touched on it. But for what I call your secret sauce or kind of like your differentiator, what kind of sets you apart?
Sharon Roemmel 5:08
I think one is that I have your right, I think I have touched on that I have this kind of a sweet or a smorgasbord of tools. Plus the years of experience, I combine the tools, but also with kind of an intuitive approach to that people will sometimes say to me, wow, 30 minutes of coaching was more effective than three hours of counseling, not that I'm trying to you know, compete or replace counselors, but I think the combination as well as is kind of intuitively knowing what people need, and what might be beneficial, is really what sets me apart.
Gresham Harkless 5:41
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I can imagine that. When a lot of people or some people only have like maybe one kind of tool that they can use they always say you have to use this, but you being able to have like you said, one of my favorite words, a smorgasbord of analogies that people can use, they can you can definitely figure out what works best for them and aligns with them. I think that's Awesome. Well, what I wanted to do was to kind of switch gears a little bit, and ask you for what I call a CEO hack. And CEO hack could be an app, it could be a book, or it could be maybe even a habit or something that you do that makes you more effective and efficient as a CEO.
Sharon Roemmel 6:14
Okay, probably not as sexy as an app. But my CEO hack could be meditation. I've done it for over 30 years, and I do it every morning. And some mornings, if I've got an extra busy day, it might just be a few minutes even. But I don't know what I would do without it, honestly, because it helps me have awareness.
So sometimes I'll sit down and, and it'll even take me awhile, I might sit there for five minutes and say, Oh there's this like loop running in my mind that I wasn't even aware of. And then I can put that aside and say I need to address it, or I need to, to not focus on that. So it helps me with awareness, it helps me with clarity, with focus, and just to be a happier, healthier person instead of obsessing all the time about certain things, you know, just to say, okay, that's, you know, I can have more awareness that I'm doing that and let it go.
Gresham Harkless 7:05
Yeah, that's huge. And especially for like any entrepreneur, business owner, CEO, there are a million things happening and the company going to be able to take that time and say, okay, this is what it is. But let me release it and let it go as a big thing. And kind of doing that on a regular basis is huge.
Sharon Roemmel 7:19
And sometimes just to add, I'll find that when I kind of clear the decks, then I'll have an AHA moment, if something will come in, of like, oh, you should contact this person, or this would be a great idea for a class. Whereas when that business is going on in my mind, then I don't have access to that. But it helps in that way, too. So it has a direct impact on my business.
Gresham Harkless 7:42
Yeah and I love that idea of clearing the decks, because sometimes, and I kind of feel like, you know, I'm no doctor or anything, but I feel like there's a certain limit to the number of things you can kind of hold on to. So when you're able to clear the deck, as you said, sometimes it opens up other opportunities, and maybe insights or answers to problems that we have that we didn't even know we had to answer.
Sharon Roemmel 8:01
Yeah, absolutely.
Gresham Harkless 8:02
Yeah Well, cool. So now I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO nugget. And a CEO nugget is a word of wisdom or a piece of advice you might have for entrepreneurs and business owners.
Sharon Roemmel 8:11
So kind of I guess segway a little bit from what I was just saying if there's something that keeps getting your attention when it's almost like something's knocking at your door, and it won't let you alone, pay attention to it. So it's easy sometimes when we're busy, whether that's I've had people say before, Oh, I feel like I'm done with this part of my work, or maybe even completely done with this occupation, but they're afraid to let it go. But that just that thought keeps coming to them, or it could be Hey, I should offer this new service, or it might be their body that's talking so Boy, I've noticed that my right elbow really sore because I've been on the computer a lot. But I gotta push through here.
So those kinds of things that we all have fleeting ideas, and you know, these little, I think genius moments that pop up, but those ones that just like keep coming back to you. I think it's really crucial to pay attention to those as part of the nuggets on our path to a life of joy and purpose and wellness.
Gresham Harkless 9:09
Yeah, and I'm a big believer that kind of everything happens for a reason. And sometimes the universe talks to you even when you have your blinders on and your ears closed. And sometimes those things that repeatedly tap on your shoulder, so to speak, to say, hey, you know, pay attention to me, whether it be an idea or like you said, and maybe a nagging injury or something like that is something you should kind of pay attention to.
Sharon Roemmel 9:28
Yes, absolutely.
Gresham Harkless 9:29
Awesome Awesome. Well, now I wanted to ask you what is my favorite question, which is kind of the definition of CEO we're hoping on this podcast to kind of redefine and look at what exactly a CEO means, and having different guests on this show to kind of answer it. So I want to ask you what being a CEO means to you?
Sharon Roemmel 9:46
Well, and like I said, I love that you're doing this that as I talked about before we started recording but I love that you're redefining it because like I said in the beginning I wasn't somebody who said yeah, I want to do this but now that I am doing it have been doing it for all these years. One it means to me is that I get to have this value-based business. And because values are so important to me, everything I do in my work is values-based. So from what I purchase whether I purchase recycled paper, you know, from my printer or the policies that I set, who I work with, where I work, the hours I work, all of that is really values-driven. And then therefore, even without me saying that out loud to people, then I attract people who are in alignment with my values, because it's such a part of my mission and who I am in this business. The other thing I would say is self-responsibility.
When I was an employee, I was a good employee, but I always felt like oh, I've got to stay later or work harder on this because my boss wants me to. And then when it was just me, it didn't take me long to say, oh, wait a minute, all those years, it was really me, it wasn't the boss. So I really like that. I mean, people say the buck stops here in kind of a negative way. But for me, the fact that it's like I'm responsible for what happens in my business, I'm not totally responsible for the results my clients get, because it is a partnership. But I am responsible for how I show up what I bring to the world, those kinds of things. And I love that it's like, ultimately, if I'm not happy, if I'm not, well, if I'm not liking what's happening with my business, it's me and I get to then choose to do something different. So I love that. And that's I guess that's for me, that's the definition of being a CEO is that it's that it gets to be values-based and that I am responsible.
Gresham Harkless 11:32
Yeah, I love that definition and kind of what it hits on as far as like the values but also the self-responsibility, as you said, and having more control over the kind of like your outlook on things or how things are going you don't control everything, but you do have greater control to some degree. So I think that's a phenomenal definition. And Sharon, I truly appreciate you for taking some time out of your schedule. What I wanted to do is kind of pass you the mic, so to speak, just to see if there's anything additional, you want to let our readers and our listeners know, and then how best people can get a hold of you.
Sharon Roemmel 12:00
Can't think of anything else. I really enjoyed this. I loved your questions. It was really fun. And people can get a hold of me at my website, which is PracticallyEnlightenedYou.com Or they can find me on Facebook. It's Sharon Roemmel oh gosh, I should know this. It's coaching and retreats, I think there are too many Sharon Roemmel out there. So you probably have in your podcast how to spell my name so they can find me that way. So yeah, I would love to connect with people and hear their thoughts and ideas and answer any questions for them.
Gresham Harkless 12:29
Absolutely. And what we'll do is we'll have the links in the show notes so anybody can kind of click through and hear more about all the awesome things that you're doing. So Sharon, thank you so much again, I truly appreciate you and hope you have a phenomenal rest of the day.
Sharon Roemmel 12:40
