IAM2932 – How Guiding Clients Through Uncertainty Creates Real Value
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Trap of the Unseen Solution
A pervasive and deeply stressful challenge for many individuals and businesses is facing high-stakes problems not because a solution doesn’t exist, but because they simply do not know what options are available. High-friction issues—whether involving tax liabilities, legal entanglements, or operational crises—are never just line items on a checklist; they carry heavy emotional burdens like fear, embarrassment, uncertainty, and sleepless nights. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from Tenenbaum Law PC founder Karen on episode 110 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why the right guide helps people sleep at night—and how reducing anxiety becomes a core pillar of your value proposition.
The Strategy and Human Pillars: Providing Pathways Through Complexity
True execution at the intersection of the Strategy and Human Pillars proves that strategic advisory is about far more than pursuing aggressive growth; it is about helping people see a viable way forward when circumstances feel completely overwhelming. An experienced guide sees remedies—such as installment agreements, penalty abatements, or voluntary disclosure pathways—that the client might never know to request.
Solving complex, high-pressure problems requires more than technical knowledge alone. It demands streamlined processes, empathetic communication, and an aligned team dedicated to guiding clients from emotional paralysis to lasting peace of mind.
Selling Relief and Clarity Over Raw Information
The core takeaway for any CEO is recognizing that clients rarely pay solely for raw information or technical mechanics; they invest in the immense relief of knowing an expert understands the terrain and can navigate the way through. Your deepest expertise lies in restoring clarity, revealing hidden options, and lifting the heavy fog of anxiety.
Ask yourself this defining question: “What hidden anxieties or heavy burdens are your clients quietly carrying that your business could alleviate through better education, clearer guidance, and structured processes?”. Positioning your business as the trusted guide through complex terrain is the ultimate lever required to eliminate client friction, deliver genuine peace of mind, and build enduring market authority.

A question worth thinking about and spending a little bit more time on and journaling or meditating on it, especially in your business and maybe even in your life, is like, what anxieties are your clients carrying that your business can help reduce through clearer guidance, better processes, or stronger education? Because here’s the realization: people don’t just pay for the answer. Sometimes they pay for the relief of knowing someone knows the way through.

Some problems feel overwhelming, not because there is no solution, but because the person facing the problem doesn’t know what options exist. This is what came up through episode number 110 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Karen. And at the time of the conversation, Karen was the founder of Tenenbaum Law PC, a tax law firm helping individuals and businesses facing IRS and New York State law problems. She was also co-founder of Commerce Plaza Incorporated, a nonprofit introducing children to the business community through a simulated work environment. Here’s something that I really want to spend a little bit more time with, is this idea of helping people sleep at night. Sounds weird. Where would that come from, from such a powerful conversation that you had about such an important topic? But Listen to me a little bit and follow me. Karen talked about growing up around a family business and wanting to help small businesses and individuals through accounting and law. Now, her work helps people with tax problems move towards a better life and ultimately more peace. Why does this matter? Because as builders, especially those in the service business, we’re not only solving tech problems, we’re not only just solving these specific problems, we’re actually reducing anxiety. Think about it. There can be a potentially very long list of problems— tax problems, maybe legal problems, health problems, financial problems, operational problems. These are not just tasks on a checklist. They are, and they carry stress, fear, embarrassment, uncertainty, and sometimes shame. Those are very human emotions. And Karen shared examples where people may not realize that they are in installment agreements, penalty abatements, voluntary disclosure options or strategies for handling IRS New York State matters. We talked around a lot of different things. The expert sees pathways the client may not even know to ask about. This comes up in the strategy, but also in the human pillar, because strategy is not only about growth. Sometimes strategy is about helping everyday people see the next option when the situation feels heavy. Karen’s broader and deeper point, I would say, is around having a vision and a team that believes in it fits this too. You serve people in complex strategy. You need more than just knowledge. You need process, clarity, communication, and a team aligned around helping clients move through that problem. The idea I’d carry with you is this: your expertise may be valuable because it gives people options when they feel trapped. Question worth thinking about and spending a little bit more time on and journaling or meditating on it, especially in your business and maybe even in your life, is like, what anxieties are your clients carrying that your business can help reduce through clear guidance, better processes, or stronger education. Because here’s the realization: people don’t just pay for the answer. Sometimes they pay for the relief of knowing someone knows the way through. If your business keeps or helps people through complicated problems— definitely not keep them there— this conversation with Karen is definitely one worth revisiting.
