IAM2931 – Human Connection꞉ The Builder Lesson Hidden in Travel
Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

The Trap of the Cold Transaction
A pervasive and quietly limiting roadblock for high-performing builders is fixating entirely on product features, technical interfaces, and operational logistics while overlooking the fundamental human element. Just as a traveler can visit a city and entirely miss its soul without connecting with locals, customers can use a platform without ever forming a meaningful bond with the brand. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from Glide founder Monica on episode 109 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why people are the heart of the experience—and how infusing authentic connection turns utility into long-term loyalty.
The Human and Visibility Pillars: Community as a Core Value Proposition
True execution at the intersection of the Human and Visibility Pillars proves that modern consumers demand far more than static information or generic recommendations. They actively seek trust, belonging, and shared lived experiences.
By observing how prospective users organically ask each other for localized guidance on social platforms, Monica identified an unmet need for genuine connection rather than automated directory lists. Paying close attention to the questions your market naturally asks one another allows you to engineer an offering that bridges the gap between basic utility and deep relational value.
Connecting Customers to Each Other
The core takeaway for any CEO is recognizing that while an effective product gets users through the door, it is the surrounding human ecosystem that makes the entire experience unforgettable. Leaders must also nurture their own internal mindset—capturing positive ideas and intentional thoughts—because the energy you cultivate internally dictates the culture and environment you build externally.
Ask yourself this defining question: “Where could your business create exponential value by connecting your customers to each other, rather than merely tethering them to your product?”. Building genuine human connection into the very fabric of your offer is the ultimate lever required to eliminate transactional churn and build a vibrant, enduring brand.

You can visit a place and still miss the culture if you never connect with the people who actually live there. This is what came up in episode number 109 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Monica. At the time of the conversation, Monica was building Glide, a platform focused on connecting travelers and locals so people could experience cities through community and not just attractions. The idea I would really run with and consider a little bit more deeper is her belief that people are the heart of Of course, of course that applies to travel, but it actually applies far beyond travel if we really think about it.
If you’re building something meaningful, you’re in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I’m Gresh, and for over a decade, I’ve had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn’t about following someone else’s blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can’t lose. Even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I’ve come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I’m starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I’ve been dying to share, drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content: visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO Podcast.

The idea I would really run with and consider a little bit more deeper is her belief that people are the heart of the city. Of course, of course that applies to travel, but it actually applies far beyond travel if we really think about it. As builders, often we will focus on the product, the platform, the service, the itinerary, the content, or even the transaction. But often the real value is in the human connection that’s wrapped into and around all of it. Monica noticed this, and during our conversation she talked around and, and about, uh, people that were already using social media to ask questions like and say things like, I’m coming to Chicago, what should I do? I saw you went to Paris, what do you recommend? She saw that people wanted more than just the generic tools. They want a connection with like-minded people and real local insight. And therein lies the powerful builder lesson. Sometimes the market is already telling us what It wants through the questions people keep asking each other. And this shows up in the human and the visibility pillars at CV Nation. Community can become part of the value proposition when people want more than just information. They want belonging, trust, and lived experiences. Monica also talked about writing things down and listening to positive talks. That fits through the same idea in the same line because The ideas we capture and the thoughts that we feed shape the words we speak and the actions that we take. Here’s something to consider a little bit more. Don’t just build the right thing, build the human connection that makes the thing meaningful. And here’s something worth considering a little bit more in your business and what you’re looking to build. Where could your business create more value by connecting people to each other, not just to your product? Because sometimes in Honestly, very often it’s the product gets people in the door, but it’s truly the people that are making the experience unforgettable. If you’re building or even considering something around community, travel, culture, or even connection, this conversation with Monica is one definitely worth revisiting.
