Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man in front of a collage of faces with the text: “Encouragement hits different when it comes from someone who lived it. Season 9 Episode #2929.”.The Trap of Hiding Your Story

A pervasive and overlooked roadblock for many builders is hiding their lived challenges, believing that remaining perfectly polished is the only way to maintain professional authority. However, encouragement sounds vastly different and carries real weight when it comes from a leader who has actually navigated through hardship; it stops feeling like an empty slogan and becomes undeniable evidence. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from portfolio entrepreneur, author, and cancer survivor Trisha on episode 107 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why hope hits different when it comes from someone who lived it—and how sharing processed experience builds profound market trust.

The Visibility and Human Pillars: Hope That Has Receipts

True execution at the intersection of the Visibility and Human Pillars proves that visibility is not just about broadcasting what you do; it is about showing the road you have walked and the unique perspective you gained as a result. Trisha, navigating one year of cancer remission, utilized her journey not as a plea for pity, but as a powerful, documented message of hope and transformation.

When a leader confirms there is light at the end of the tunnel because they have actually been in that tunnel, their processed experience creates a unique kind of authority. Furthermore, sharing this level of deep connection requires operational support; utilizing automation tools like Buffer ensures your message consistently reaches the right audience without entirely draining your personal energy.

Transforming Survival Into Market Encouragement

The core takeaway for any CEO is recognizing that your story does not have to be perfect to be incredibly powerful—it simply needs to be honest enough to help someone else believe they can keep going. You do not need to force vulnerability or turn every painful memory into content, but you should not underestimate the hope your lived experience can provide.

Ask yourself this defining question: “What hardship have you survived, learned from, or rebuilt from that could become vital encouragement for the exact people you serve?”. Reframing your honest lived experience as a tool for connection is the ultimate lever required to lead with authentic, unshakable authority.

Encouragement sounds different when it comes from someone who has actually walked through the hard things. It stops feeling like a slogan and starts feeling like evidence. That’s what stood out to me in episode number 107 of the I Am CEO Podcast. I had Tricia on the show and Tricia was a contributor to our blog. And of course, as a guest on this podcast episode, and At the time of our conversation, Tricia described herself as a portfolio entrepreneur, an author, an empowerment guru, designer of life and fashion, social media extraordinaire, published model, and sprinkler of fabulousness. And here’s the idea I want to run with: hope that has receipts. Tricia talked about being one year in her cancer remission, writing her book, and using her story not as a pity story, but as a message of hope and transformation. She wanted people to know that if she could move through hardship, there could still be light for them as well. This matters for builders because your story may be part of how people trust your message. Now, don’t get me wrong, not every painful thing has to become a piece of content. It doesn’t have to be a Facebook Live or a blog post or a video. Not because vulnerability should be forced, but because processed experience creates a different kind of authority. Pay attention to this, and I say this a lot on the show. When someone says, hold on, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and they have actually been in the tunnel, the words carry weight. I often say a lot of the possibilities and the reality come as a result of hearing people’s stories and their journeys. When you hear somebody has been through a challenging journey and it’s similar to what you’re going through, it makes you feel like you can also get through it. So this comes up and connects to the visibility and the human part pillars. Visibility is not just telling people what you do. Sometimes it’s showing them the road you have walked and the perspective you have gained as a result of the road that you walked. Tricia also talked around SEO hacks like Buffer to help manage automation, but even that fits into this same deeper idea. Why? Because when you have a message, you need the systems that help the message keep, keep reaching the people that you want them to reach without draining you as a result. The idea I’d carry with you and maybe meditate a little bit more on is this: don’t underestimate the hope your lived experience can give to someone else. And here’s a question worth thinking about a little bit more. Maybe you can journal about this. What have you survived, learned, or rebuilt from that could become encouragement for the people that you serve? Because the reality is that your story does not have to be perfect to be powerful. It just has to be honest enough to help someone believe they can keep going. If you’re someone who’s been wondering whether your story belongs in your work, this conversation with Tricia is definitely one worth revisiting.
