IAM2924 – How External Feedback Reveals the High-Value Strengths You Overlook

Special Episode by Gresham Harkless Jr.

Smiling man in front of a collage of faces with text: “How external feedback reveals the high-value strengths you overlook. Season 9, Episode #3924.”.The Trap of Dismissing What Comes Naturally

A pervasive and quietly limiting roadblock for high-performing builders is assuming that because a skill feels easy or second nature, it must not carry significant market value. Far too often, we are simply too close to our own innate strengths to recognize them as true differentiators. We mistakenly believe everyone can communicate, organize, solve problems, or lead with the same ease, causing us to dismiss our most potent gifts. In this episode, extracting high-leverage insights from insurance advisor and finance professional Sharon on episode 104 of the I AM CEO podcast, we break down why sometimes other people see your gift first—and how owning that feedback unlocks your next level of growth.

The Human and Visibility Pillars: Seeing Yourself with Strategic Clarity

True execution at the intersection of the Human and Visibility Pillars proves that visibility is not merely about how external prospects perceive your brand—it is fundamentally about learning to see yourself with absolute clarity. Sharon’s journey from finance, accounting, and downsizing into a thriving sales and advisory career illustrates the power of listening to what trusted voices have repeatedly noticed in you.

Recognizing a natural gift is only the initial step; you must intentionally refine that innate talent into a structured, dependable skill that clients can trust. When you combine self-awareness with intentional relationship building and clear communication, your natural abilities become the foundation of your market authority.

Stepping Into What Has Always Been There

The core takeaway for any CEO is recognizing that navigating a pivot or pursuing a new venture rarely requires becoming a completely different person. More often, strategic evolution demands that you stop fighting your natural inclinations and finally own the gifts you have already possessed all along.

When you pay close attention to repeated feedback regarding your strengths, you uncover high-leverage business opportunities that align naturally with your strengths rather than forcing unnatural execution. Ask yourself this defining question: “What specific strengths or abilities do people repeatedly praise in you that you have yet to fully lean into and monetize?”. Embracing your innate gifts and building systems around them is the ultimate lever required to lead with effortless confidence and scale your authentic impact.

Sometimes we are too close to our own strengths. We dismiss what comes naturally. We assume if it feels easy for us, it must not be valuable. Meanwhile, other people are watching us communicate, connect, solve, explain, organize, create, or potentially even lead, and they can see the gifts more clearly.

Sometimes the thing you built for is obvious to other people before it becomes obvious to you. This came up in episode number 104 of the I Am CEO Podcast with Sharon, and at the time of our Interview. Shannon was a career agent with US Health Advisors in Sterling, Virginia, helping individuals, families, small businesses with health insurance options outside of the Affordable Care Act at the time of our interview. Her story was really powerful because she didn’t start out thinking, I’m going into sales. She came from accounting and finance, earned an MBA, worked in pricing and government contracting, and then got downsized more than once. So when this insurance opportunity came up for her, she remembered that people had told her before that she should be in sales. At the time, she hadn’t really accepted it. Later, she realized that may— they may have seen something in her that she didn’t actually see in herself. And I can say that so much even for myself. Often the thing that we’re talented in is our gift, and the thing that we do maybe world-class is something we assume everybody else can do. We assume it’s something that Everybody has that talent and ability, but often it takes other people pointing it out to saying, hey, that’s something I can’t do. I really appreciate you in doing that. And that becomes something very powerful. That’s the builder nugget. Sometimes we are too close to our own strengths. We dismiss what comes naturally. We assume if it feels easy for us, it must not be valuable. Meanwhile, other people are watching us communicate, connect, solve, explain, organize, create, or potentially even lead. And they can see the gifts more clearly. Sharon’s work also required clarity, confidence, value, trust, and relationship building. That fits the same idea because once you recognize the gift, you still have to develop it into a skill people can trust. This comes up in the visibility in the human parts, in the human pillars. And really, it’s visibility not only just in terms of being seen by the market. Sometimes it’s about seeing yourself accurately. And that’s one of the most powerful things that you can do. The idea I’d carry with you is this: don’t ignore repeated feedback about what people see in you. A question worth asking and maybe journaling or just thinking about a little bit more is, what strengths have people kept pointing out that you still haven’t fully owned? Because sometimes the next business opportunity is not asking you to become someone else. It’s asking you to finally believe What has already been there. If you’re in a period or season of transition and wondering what direction fits, this conversation with Sharon is definitely one worth revisiting.
