IAM2832 – The Importance of Redefining Health for Sustainable Performance

A smiling man is in the foreground with text reading "The Importance of Redefining Health for Sustainable Performance, Season 9, Episode #2832" over a collage of faces.

The Trap of Narrow Definitions

Most people define health through a narrow lens, focusing strictly on weight, appearance, and immediate results. Much like “vanity metrics” in business, these definitions rarely stand the test of time. In this episode, inspired by a conversation with Lauren Conlon, we explore why builders who are constantly grinding within their businesses often overlook the broader reality of what it means to be truly healthy.

Redefining Health as a Holistic System

Sustainable health requires moving beyond physical appearance to include mental and emotional well-being. While short-term efforts can produce temporary results, only long-term habits create the sustainability needed to last. By expanding your definition of health, your approach to daily wellness improves, giving you more awareness of how your habits affect your overall performance.

Engineering Sustainable Results

The core takeaway for any CEO is found in the “Human and People Pillar”: once you understand how you are truly fueled, you can build a business that is equally sustainable. Shifting your focus from short-term fixes to long-term health is an absolute game changer for professional performance. Ask yourself this critical question: “Am I focused more on short-term results or long-term sustainability?”. Your answer to that question will fundamentally change your behavior and your trajectory.

Short term efforts can create results, but long term habits create sustainability. And sustainability is what lasts the test of time. Here's the real takeaway. Redefining health leads to more sustainable outcomes. When that definition expands, our approach also improves and expands with it. So we have a lot more awareness around what we're doing, not doing, and how it's affecting the holistic aspect of our health.

Most people define health narrowly. They look at health as weight, appearance and short term results. But here's the reality. Much like other vanity things that we might have in our lives or vanity metrics, those definitions don't actually last faster Stand the test of time in episode number 44 of the I Am CEO Podcast, I had an awesome interview with Lauren Conlon and she spoke from a perspective of redefining health within the health, wellness and fitness industry. What was really big around this was how sustainable health requires a broader perspective and a holistic definition of perspective. Health includes physical, mental, emotional and so much more that we don't always look at or always consider. For builders that are working and grinding within their business every single day, this is a huge thing that we often overlook and sometimes by the time we do, aware become aware understand how important it is. Sometimes it could be, I don't want to say too late, but it doesn't have the potential impact that we could have had if we had taken care of it earlier. Short term efforts can create results, but long term habits create sustainability and sustainability. Sustainability is what lasts the test of time. Here's the real takeaway. Redefining health leads to more sustainable outcomes. When that definition expands, our approach also improves and expands with it. So we have a lot more awareness around what we're doing, not doing, and how it's affecting the holistic aspect of our health. This comes up naturally with the human people pillar, largely because once we understand how we're fueled and how we're built for sustainable results, we can start to be aware of that and help to ultimately definitely build our businesses in much of the same way. Here's something that is definitely worth asking. When I really look at the things that I'm doing, I'm really honest around that. Am I focused more on short term results or long term sustainability? Answering that question and that shift actually changes your behavior. Had a phenomenal episode with Lauren and we talked around so much, including health mindset and sustainable performance. It's definitely one of these conversations you want to have, but also check out and listen to because once you start to flip that switch and look at things differently, it can be an absolute game changer.
