IAM2819 – Why Support Systems are Essential for Long-Term Success

A man smiles next to text that reads, "Why support systems are essential for long-term success. Season 9 Episode #2819." Background shows various people’s faces.

The Myth of the Solo Superhero

Many builders operate under the “superhero mentality,” believing they must wear a cape and solve every problem in isolation. This pressure to be “Superwoman” or “Superman” often stems from a structure built entirely around problem-solving rather than human connection. In this episode, we challenge the idea that you must pull yourself up solely by your own bootstraps, highlighting that even the most successful leaders rely on a silent foundation of community and support.

Support Systems as a Performance Multiplier

Support systems are not a luxury; they are an essential requirement for reaching your desired altitude. Your business and your life are inextricably connected, and the environment you cultivate directly impacts your ability to perform.

Data shows that people who feel supported do not just feel better—they perform better, recover from setbacks faster, and move forward with significantly more confidence.

Engineering a Culture of Support

The core takeaway for any CEO is to evaluate the “Human Pillar” within their own organization. To reach the heights your team is capable of, you must transition from applying more pressure to providing more support. As the saying goes, “to go fast, go alone; to go far, go together”. Ask yourself this critical question: “Where in my life or business do I need more support instead of more pressure?”. That simple shift in awareness can change your entire trajectory.

Some challenges don't show up in business plans. They can show up in life transitions, stress moments that actually require support. In episode number 36, I spoke with Lauren, and she is a postpartum mentor that helps mothers navigate anxiety and stress. What really stood out and came up for me was how critical support is during those vulnerable moments.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade, I've had the honor and the privilege of learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path. What I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well, too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately. So be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the I Am CEO podcast.

We often feel like we have to wear the cape, be Superwoman, Superman, and save the day. And a lot of that mentality is because we're just structured and built around problem solving, creating solutions. You know, being the mother, being the father, whatever it is, whatever title you might have. Often we come up in terms of wanting to be that superhero. But here's a realization. People don't just need solutions, they actually need to be understood. I think it's inherent to the humans that we are. For builders, this highlights something very, very important that we often overlook. You don't operate in isolation. Your life and business are extremely connected. I often say that in order to reach the altitude that you want, your environment plays such a huge part of that. You hear the Horatio algorithm, you hear the people that pull themselves up by the bootstrap. But we don't realize and remember that those people that do that actually do have a support system or community or something around them that helps that to happen. It may not always happen in the way that they expect, but a lot of times they have more and we have more than sometimes we think that we do. Here's the real takeaway and something that Rich really wants you to kind of pay attention to. The support systems are not optional. They're essential and necessary for success. If you don't have that support system that you think that you should have, often you're not going to reach the success that you think that you should. Think about this. People who feel supported perform better, recover faster, and move forward with more confidence. Think about this from a builder standpoint, but also think about this from an environment that you're creating within your organization. If you have team members, how are you making sure that they feel supported so that they can reach the heights that they can, that they're capable of doing? This connects naturally to the human people pillar. Why we often don't realize or we don't understand the impact of those that are around us. For better and sometimes for worse. If you don't know who you are, take a look at the people that you spend the most time with. That's who you are, and that's what shows up and comes up often. So know in order to go further, you go together. In order to go faster, we often go alone. But know that we need each other so that we can reach the altitude that we want to reach. Here's a question worth considering. Where in my business or in my life and or in my life, do I need more support instead of more pressure? That awareness can absolutely change everything. This episode explores mental health support and resilience during the challenging transitions.
