IAM2793 – How Systems and Routines Create Reliable Discipline for Builders

A smiling man is on the right; on the left, text reads: "How systems and routines create reliable discipline for builders. Season 9 Episode #2793." Background features faint faces.

The Fallacy of Motivation

Most people believe discipline is an innate trait—you either have the drive or you don’t. However, high performers view discipline differently: they don't rely on fluctuating willpower; they build systems that make discipline easier. In this episode, Krista—a co-founder and former athlete—explains how athletic discipline translates directly into the business world.

Systems Over Willpower

Athletes don't reach peak performance by willing themselves to work hard every day. Instead, they lean on structured programs and consistent repetition that remove the need for constant decision-making. When you replace “intensity” with “consistency,” progress becomes predictable. By creating repeatable routines, you aren't forcing results—you are supporting them.

Engineering Your “Star Time”

The core takeaway from this conversation is that high performance is rarely accidental; it is designed. For builders juggling multiple responsibilities, establishing a morning routine—or “Star Time”—allows you to take control of the day before the day takes control of you. Ask yourself: “What routine or system could I build today that would make success easier to repeat tomorrow?”.

Most people believe discipline is something you either have or you don't. You're motivated, you're driven, you're committed, or you are not. But here's something that's maybe a little bit of a secret. High performers often see discipline completely different. What do they do? They actually build systems that make discipline easier.

If you're building something meaningful, you're in the right place. This is the I Am CEO Podcast. I'm gresh, and for over a decade I've had the honor and the privilege of Learning directly from CEOs, entrepreneurs and business owners just like you on how to build. After recording more than 1600 episodes, one thing has become clear. Success isn't about following someone else's blueprint. And as I like to say on the show, if you run your own race, you can't lose. Even when we feel the journey should be a straight and linear path, what I've come to find out is success is a lot more like a plate of spaghetti. So in this special segment and episode, I'm starting to curate and share some CEO hacks and CEO nuggets that I've been dying to share. Drawn from thousands of episodes with phenomenal guests that have provided awesome value on the show, but also my 10 years of business experience as well too. These lessons are designed to strengthen the foundational principles that every business is built on and guided by a simple equation that we always go back to with our content. Visibility plus resources times connections equals success. This is practical wisdom you can apply almost immediately, so be sure to check out the show notes for more resources and next steps on how to level up. And of course, enjoy this special episode of the IM CEO Podcast.

Most people believe discipline is something you either have or you don't. You're motivated, you're driven, you're committed, or you are not. But here's something that's maybe a little bit of a secret. High performers often see discipline completely different. What do they do? They actually build systems that make discipline easier. In episode number 23 of the I Am CEO podcast, I spoke with Krista, a co founder and former athlete who now helps clients reach their fitness goals. What I love around this conversation with Krista is that athletic discipline translates directly into everyday life, especially in business. Here's the secret. Athletes don't actually rely on motivation. Think about it. They don't will themselves every single day to do what they need to do to be at a peak athlete. They actually create the systems and the routines that allow them to do that. And they rely and lean in on those routines. How does this come about? Training schedules, Structured programs, Consistent repetition. Here's what that really does that structure. Those processes, those systems, those routines. They create the opportunity to just do the thing. You don't have to decide to do that. There's no more decision to take. For builders working in their business every day, this lesson applies directly. Motivation fluctuates. Energy changes. Life gets busy. But systems continue. The real takeaway is that discipline isn't about intensity, it's about consistency. When you create repeatable habits and routines, progress becomes predictable. You're not actually forcing results, you're actually supporting them. Krista's perspective highlights how structure can unlock performance in ways that motivation alone never could. Where does this show up in the CBNation operations pillar? How systems, routines and processes can make success repeatable because high performance is rarely accidental, it's designed Here's a question worth sitting with what routine or system could I build today that would make success easier to repeat tomorrow? I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of morning routines. Why? A lot of times it allows you to take control of the day before the day takes control of you. Especially for builders that are juggling many, many things. These routines or systems or morning routines. I like to call it my star time. It allows you to set up your day for success. Obviously, we spoke around a lot of different topics, including fitness, performance and mindset, and how athletes translate discipline into sustainable habits in business and of course, in life as well. If you're looking to create these consistent results instead of relying on motivation, this conversation and this podcast is perfect for you because it offers insight that's worth spending some time with.
