The Customer-Centric Pivot

Most websites function as digital resumes, cluttered with “we do this” and “we've been in business since that,” but the reality is that your visitors don't actually care about your history. They are tuned into a single frequency: WIIFM, or “What’s In It For Me?”. At the heart of entrepreneurship is solving problems, and to turn a visitor into a customer, you must stop talking about yourself and start proving how you can solve their problems right now.

The Five-Second Rule

Clarity is the ultimate driver of conversion, yet many websites force users to work far too hard to understand the value proposition. If a visitor has to scroll through three paragraphs or click around multiple pages just to understand your business, you have likely already lost them. Your homepage must answer three critical questions within the first five seconds: what do you do, who is it for, and what happens next?. By making these answers obvious and fast, you remove the friction that causes potential customers to bounce.

Solving Problems Through Clarity

At its heart, entrepreneurship is the act of solving problems, but those solutions are useless if they are shrouded in confusion. While you may be driving significant traffic to your site, that traffic will never take action if they feel overwhelmed or ignored. Transitioning from a self-centered website to a customer-centered one is the most effective way to improve your conversion rates. Your website is talking about you, when in reality you should be talking about them. Most websites are full of we do this, we offer that. We've been in business since this we're accomplished because of X, Y and Z and A, B and C. And your visitors don't actually care. It's funny, one of the owners of a networking group I was a part of used to always say, everybody's listening to Wii. What's in it for me? Keep in mind, your visitors, they care about one thing. How can you solve my problems right now? If we're honest, that's what's at the heart of entrepreneurship. Solving problems. So here's ultimately what you need to change. Your homepage should answer three questions in the first five seconds. What do you do? Who is it for? and what happens next? Someone has to scroll, click around, read through three paragraphs to figure out that, frankly, you've already lost them. Clarity converts, confusion doesn't stop making people work to understand how you can help them. You want to make sure that you give them an idea of how you create an experience to make their lives better. Make it obvious, make it fast, make it about them, not you. That's how you turn visitors into customers.
